1 2 3 2 Peter 1 - RWB Paraphrase (21 V) See Chapter at a Glance See Comments Go to top 1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained the same faith we have through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ, 3 according to His divine power, having given us everything we need to live and be godly, through the knowledge of Him that has called us to glory and virtue. 4 Through this knowledge He has granted us His precious and magnificent promises, so that you may partake of His divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 For this reason apply all diligence adding virtue to your faith, and to that knowledge, 6 and to that temperance, and then patience, and then godliness, 7 and to that brotherly kindness, and to all these add love. 8 For if these qualities abound in you they will make you fruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 If a person lacks these qualities he is blind and short sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. 10 For this reason, brethren, be careful to make your calling and election sure, for if you do these things, you will not stumble. 11 In this way you will gain entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 12 For this reason I would be negligent if I did not remind you of these things, even though you already know about them, because you have been established in the truth. 13 But as long as I am alive I will remind you, 14 for Jesus Christ has shown me that I do not have long to live. 15 I want to be very sure that when I am gone you will remember these things. 16 For we have not followed cleverly devised fables, when we made known to you the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received honor and glory from God the Father, and we heard His voice out of His glory say, "This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased." 18 We plainly heard His voice speaking from heaven when we were on the holy mountain. 19 We have the sure word of prophecy and you would do well to take heed to it, as you would to a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 Know this first, no prophecy of scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for no prophecy came in the old times by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 2 - RWB Paraphrase (22 V) See Chapter at a Glance See Comments Go to top 1 In those days there were false prophets among the people, even as there will be those among you, who introduce destructive heresies, even denying the LORD who bought them. They are bringing a swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their poisonous teachings maligning the truth. 3 In their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their judgment is coming, and their destruction is sure. 4 For if God did not spare the angels that sinned, but cast them into hell, delivering them into chains of darkness, reserved for judgment, 5 and if He did not spare the ungodly of the world before the flood, but preserved only Noah, a preacher of righteousness, along with seven others, 6 Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, are examples of eternal punishment by fire to those who indulged in gross immorality and go after strange flesh. 7 And if He rescued righteous Lot, who was incensed by the sensual conduct of the wicked, 8 his righteous soul being vexed day after day with their unlawful deeds, 9 then the LORD surely knows how to rescue the godly from temptation and to reserve the unrighteous for punishment in the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who indulge the flesh in the lust of corrupt desires and despise authority. They are daring, selfwilled and not afraid to accuse authorities. 11 Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, do not accuse them before the LORD. 12 These men, like unreasoning animals and creatures of instinct, speak evil of things they do not understand. They will perish in their own corruption. 13 They shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, for they count it a pleasure to riot during the day. They are blemishes, reveling in their deceptions while they feast with you, 14 having eyes full of adultery, sinning continually, beguiling the unstable. They train their hearts in greed and are accursed children. 15 They forsake what is right, and go astray, following the way of Balaam the Son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness. 16 He was rebuked for his iniquity by a mute donkey speaking with a man's voice, restraining the madness of the prophet. 17 People like this are springs without water, mists driven by a storm. Black darkness has been reserved for these. 18 For when they speak arrogant and vain words, they entice by fleshly desires those who may barely escape from those in error. 19 Who promise freedom while they themselves are slaves to corruption. For a man is enslaved to what has overcome him. 20 For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the LORD and Savior Jesus Christ, and then are again entangled in these vile sins and overcome, the last state is worse than the first. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it, and to have turned away from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 The result shows these proverbs to be true, "A dog returns to its own vomit," and, "A sow, after washing, returns to wallow in the mire." 2 Peter 3 - RWB Paraphrase (18 V) See Chapter at a Glance See Comments Go to top 1 Beloved, I have written this second letter to stir up your sincere minds to remember, 2 the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the commandments of the LORD and Savior spoken of by the apostles. 3 Know this first: in the last days scoffers will come who are following their own lusts, 4 and say, "Where is the promise of His coming. Ever since the Fathers fell asleep, things have continued on just as they always have since creation." 5 While they are making this argument it escapes their notice that by the word of the LORD the heavens existed long ago and the earth was separated from the waters. 6 The world was then destroyed by a flood of water. 7 And finally, by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and the destruction of the ungodly. 8 Beloved, do not let this one fact escape you. With the LORD one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like a day. 9 The LORD is not slow about His promise as some count slowness. He is patient toward you, not wanting anyone to perish but for all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the LORD will come like a thief in the night. The heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements melt with fervent heat. The earth, and the works in it, will be burned up. 11 Since all these things will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people should you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 as you look for and hasten the day of God, when the heavens will be dissolved with fire and the elements melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless, according to His promise, we look for a new heavens and a new earth where righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, since you are looking for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless. 15 We should regard the longsuffering of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother, Paul, wrote to you. 16 All his letters speak of these things with some of them being hard to understand. Those who have not been taught and are unstable distort these things, trying to make the scripture say what it does not say, and this to their own destruction. 17 For this reason, beloved, watch and be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of the wicked, and fall from your own steadfastness. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever more. Amen. Chapters: 1 2 3
