1 2 3 2 Peter 1 - RWB Paraphrase (21 V) With Comments Go to top__ OR __Exit Comments 1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained the same faith we have through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ, 3 according to His divine power, having given us everything we need to live and be godly, through the knowledge of Him that has called us to glory and virtue. 4 Through this knowledge He has granted us His precious and magnificent promises, so that you may partake of His divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 For this reason apply all diligence adding virtue to your faith, and to that knowledge, 6 and to that temperance, and then patience, and then godliness, 7 and to that brotherly kindness, and to all these add love. 8 For if these qualities abound in you they will make you fruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 If a person lacks these qualities he is blind and short sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. 10 For this reason, brethren, be careful to make your calling and election sure, for if you do these things, you will not stumble. 11 In this way you will gain entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 12 For this reason I would be negligent if I did not remind you of these things, even though you already know about them, because you have been established in the truth. 13 But as long as I am alive I will remind you, 14 for Jesus Christ has shown me that I do not have long to live. 15 I want to be very sure that when I am gone you will remember these things. 16 For we have not followed cleverly devised fables, when we made known to you the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We were eyewitnesses of His majesty. COMMENT: Matthew 17:2-3 There they watched as He was transfigured. His face shown like the sun, and his garments became white with light. [3] Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Him.
17 For He received honor and glory from God the Father, and we heard His voice out of His glory say, "This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased."
18 We plainly heard His voice speaking from heaven when we were on the holy mountain.
19 We have the sure word of prophecy and you would do well to take heed to it, as you would to a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
20 Know this first, no prophecy of scripture is of any private interpretation,
21 for no prophecy came in the old times by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
COMMENT: Jude 1:6 And the angels who sinned against God and abandoned their first estate, He has reserved in everlasting bonds under darkness until the great Day of Judgment.
5 and if He did not spare the ungodly of the world before the flood, but preserved only Noah, a preacher of righteousness, along with seven others,
6 Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, are examples of eternal punishment by fire to those who indulged in gross immorality and go after strange flesh.
COMMENT: The strange flesh mention was the unholy lustful activities that defaced the image of God in mankind. And the fire is not still burning. It burned until there was nothing more to burn. That is a form of eternity. Jeremiah 23:14 "And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a terrible thing. They commit adultery and walk in falsehood. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one has turned back from his wickedness. All of them have become to Me like Sodom and Gomorrah." 2 Peter 2:6 Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, are examples of eternal punishment by fire to those who indulged in gross immorality and go after strange flesh. Genesis 19:24 Then the LORD rained fire and brimstone out of heaven on Sodom and Gomorrah,
7 And if He rescued righteous Lot, who was incensed by the sensual conduct of the wicked,
COMMENT: Genesis 19:29 But when God destroyed the cities of the valley, He remembered Abraham and sent Lot away from the destruction of the place where he had been living.
8 his righteous soul being vexed day after day with their unlawful deeds,
9 then the LORD surely knows how to rescue the godly from temptation and to reserve the unrighteous for punishment in the day of judgment,
10 and especially those who indulge the flesh in the lust of corrupt desires and despise authority. They are daring, selfwilled and not afraid to accuse authorities.
11 Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, do not accuse them before the LORD.
12 These men, like unreasoning animals and creatures of instinct, speak evil of things they do not understand. They will perish in their own corruption.
COMMENT: They will be controlled by instinct and not reason.
13 They shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, for they count it a pleasure to riot during the day. They are blemishes, reveling in their deceptions while they feast with you,
14 having eyes full of adultery, sinning continually, beguiling the unstable. They train their hearts in greed and are accursed children.
15 They forsake what is right, and go astray, following the way of Balaam the Son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness.
16 He was rebuked for his iniquity by a mute donkey speaking with a man's voice, restraining the madness of the prophet.
17 People like this are springs without water, mists driven by a storm. Black darkness has been reserved for these.
18 For when they speak arrogant and vain words, they entice by fleshly desires those who may barely escape from those in error.
19 Who promise freedom while they themselves are slaves to corruption. For a man is enslaved to what has overcome him.
COMMENT: Just as Satan promised eve freedom from God's instruction while he was suffering from his own rebellion. Genesis 3:4-5 The serpent said to the woman, "You will not die." [5] "God knows that on the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
20 For if after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the LORD and Savior Jesus Christ, and then are again entangled in these vile sins and overcome, the last state is worse than the first.
21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it, and to have turned away from the holy commandment delivered to them.
COMMENT: Ezekiel 18:24 "But when a righteous man turns from his righteousness, committing sin and doing all the abominations that a wicked man does, all his righteous deeds will not be remembered because of his treachery in turning to sin, and he will die."
22 The result shows these proverbs to be true, "A dog returns to its own vomit," and, "A sow, after washing, returns to wallow in the mire."
COMMENT: Proverbs 26:11 "As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly."
COMMENT: Isaiah 5:19 These are the ones who say, "Let's see the LORD make good His word. Let's see if He says will come to pass!" Ezekiel 12:27 "Son of man, the house of Israel says that the vision will be fulfilled after many years. His prophesies are for a time far off."
5 While they are making this argument it escapes their notice that by the word of the LORD the heavens existed long ago and the earth was separated from the waters.
6 The world was then destroyed by a flood of water.
7 And finally, by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and the destruction of the ungodly.
COMMENT: Isaiah 66:15 "For the LORD will come with fire and His chariots will be like the whirlwind, to render His anger in fury, rebuking with fire."
8 Beloved, do not let this one fact escape you. With the LORD one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like a day.
COMMENT: Psalms 90:4 A thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday past, or like a watch in the night.
9 The LORD is not slow about His promise as some count slowness. He is patient toward you, not wanting anyone to perish but for all to come to repentance.
10 But the day of the LORD will come like a thief in the night. The heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements melt with fervent heat. The earth, and the works in it, will be burned up.
COMMENT: Micah 1:4 The mountains will melt under Him and the valleys will be split like wax near a fire, as it runs down like water. Matthew 24:43 "You may be certain that if the head of the house had known the time when the thief would come, he would surely have been ready to protect his house."
11 Since all these things will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people should you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
12 as you look for and hasten the day of God, when the heavens will be dissolved with fire and the elements melt with fervent heat?
COMMENT: Isaiah 34:4 "All the stars of the heavens will be dissolved and the sky rolled up like a scroll. They will all fall like withered leaves from the vine, like figs that fall from the fig tree."
13 Nevertheless, according to His promise, we look for a new heavens and a new earth where righteousness dwells.
COMMENT: Isaiah 65:17 "For behold, I create a new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not come to mind." Isaiah 66:22 "For as the new heavens and the new earth which I will make shall remain before Me, says the LORD, so shall your descendants and your name remain."
14 Therefore, beloved, since you are looking for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless.
COMMENT: Isaiah 65:17 "For behold, I create a new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not come to mind."
15 We should regard the longsuffering of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother, Paul, wrote to you.
16 All his letters speak of these things with some of them being hard to understand. Those who have not been taught and are unstable distort these things, trying to make the scripture say what it does not say, and this to their own destruction.
17 For this reason, beloved, watch and be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of the wicked, and fall from your own steadfastness.
18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever more. Amen.
