1-5_David returned to Ziklag from the slaughter of the Amalekites. After the third day a man came from Saul's camp, his clothes were torn and dust was on his head. David asked how things had gone? The man said the people had fled the battle and Saul and Jonathan were dead. David asked how he knew this?

__6-9_The young man said that by chance he had been on Mount Gilboa and had seen Saul leaning on his spear. His life was being threatened by the enemy. He called to me and asked who I was? I told him I was an Amalekite. Then he asked me to kill him, for agony had seized him.

__10-12_So I killed him. I knew he could not live after he had fallen. I took the crown which was on his head and the bracelet on his arm and I have brought them to you. Then David tore his clothes and so did the other men with him. They mourned and wept until evening for Saul and Jonathan and the house of Israel fallen by the sword.

__13-16_Then David asked the young man where he was from. He said that he was an Amalekite. David asked him if he was not afraid to take the life of the LORD's anointed? Then he commanded one of his men to strike him down because he had killed the LORD's anointed.

__17-23_Then David chanted a lament of Saul and Jonathan that was later taught to the sons of Judah and written in the book of Jashar.

Your beauty, O Israel, is slain in your high places. How have the mighty fallen. Saul and Jonathan, beloved in their life and in death not parted. Swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.

__24-27_O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul. I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was more wonderful than the love of women. How have the mighty fallen.

1-4_Then David inquired of the LORD if he should go up to one of the cities of Judah. The LORD said yes. Then he asked which one and the LORD said Hebron. So David took his two wives, Ahinoam and Abigail along with all his men and their households. Then the men of Judah anointed David king over Judah.

__5-7_David learned that the men of Jabesh-Gilead had buried Saul and he sent a message to them saying, may the LORD bless you for your kindness to Saul your king. As your hands were strong for Saul, may they now be strong for me. Judah has anointed me king over them.

__8-11_But Abner, the commander of Saul's army had taken Ishboseth, Saul's son, and made him king over Israel. He was forty years old and was king for two years. The house of Judah followed David and he was king over Judah for seven and one half years.

__12-17_Abner agreed to meet with Joab by the pool at Gibeon. Each sat on either side of the pool. Abner suggested that they let the young men hold a contest and Joab agreed. Each man seized his opponent by the head and each was killed by the other's sword. That day the battle was severe. Abner and his men were beaten.

__18-23_The three sons of Zeruiah were there. They were Joab, Abishai and Asahel, who was as swift as a gazelle. Asahel pursued Abner and would not turn aside. Abner repeatedly warned him not to keep following him or he would kill him. Finally Abner ran the butt of his spear into Asahel's belly and he died there.

__24-29_Then Joab and Abishai pursued Abner until evening when they came to the hill of Ammah in the wilderness of Gibeon. The sons of Benjamin had gathered behind Abner. Then Abner said, shall the sword devour forever? Tell the your people to stop following their brothers. So Joab blew the trumpet and Judah stopped pursing Israel.

__30-32_At the end of the battle, Judah had lost nineteen men besides Asahel. The servants of David had struck down three hundred and sixty men of Benjamin. They took Asahel and buried him in his father's tomb in Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men went all night in order to return to Hebron the next morning.

1-5_There was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David. David grew steadily stronger and those for Saul got steadily weaker. Sons were born to David. First Amnon, then Chileab, followed by Absalom, Adonijah, Shephatiah and Ithream.

__6-10_Abner was making himself stronger and stronger within the house of Saul. Ishbosheth questioned Abner for going in to Rizpah, Saul's concubine. This made Abner very angry. He thought he should have more respect because he had kept the kingdom of Israel for Ishbosheth. From this day he decided to transfer the house of Israel to David.

__11-16_Ishbosheth was afraid of him and said nothing more. Abner then sent messengers to David offering to make a covenant and unite Israel and Judah. David agreed on the condition that his first wife, Michal, be brought to him. Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, Paltiel, who followed her weeping until they sent him back.

__17-19_Abner consulted with the elders of Israel saying, in times past you wanted David for your king. So be it. The LORD has been with him whenever he fought the Philistines. Everything Abner said seemed good to Benjamin. Then he spoke in the hearing of David at Hebron. Everyone was in agreement.

__20-23_Abner brought twenty men with him to see David who made a feast for them. Abner restated his purpose to see David as king over all Israel and Judah. So David sent Abner away in peace. While this was happening Joab had been away on a raid. When he got back he learned that Abner had been sent away in peace.

__24-26_Joab came to the king and said what have you done? Abner came and you let him get away. You know he has come to deceive you, to scout out what you are doing and how you are situated. Then without David's knowledge, he sent messengers to Abner to bring him back.

__27-30_When Abner had returned, Joab took him aside to speak to him privately and then struck him in the belly so that he died. Joab did this on account of the blood of Asahel, his brother. Later when David heard about this he said that he and his kingdom were innocent of the blood of Abner. May it fall on Joab and his father's house forever.

__31-39_David told Joab to tear his clothes, put on sackcloth and lament for Abner. King David walked behind the bier and they buried Abner in Hebron. The king and all the people wept. David would not eat anything until the sun had gone down. The people noted this and it pleased them. David felt unable to control the sons of Zeruiah.

1-3_When Ishbosheth, Saul's son, heard that Abner had died in Hebron, he lost courage, and all Israel was disturbed. He had two men who were commanders of bands. Their names were Baanah and Rechab, both sons of Rimmon, a Benjamite.

__4_Jonathan, Saul's son, had a crippled son named Mephibosheth who had been dropped by his nurse when she was fleeing.

__5-8_The sons of Rimmon killed Ishbosheth in his house during his midday rest. They came to the middle of the house on the pretense of getting wheat and struck him down. They brought his head to David at Hebron thinking to win his favor, saying, here is the head of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life.

__9-12_David told them that when someone had come with the news of Saul's death, thinking it was good news, he had had him killed. How much more these wicked men who had taken the life of a righteous man must surely die. Then he commanded his young men to take their lives. Then he buried the head of Ishbosheth in Saul's grave.

1-5_All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and made a covenant with him before the LORD where they anointed him king over Israel. He was thirty years old when he became king and he reigned forty years, seven years and six months in Hebron over Judah and thirty three years in Jerusalem over Israel and Judah.

__6-10_The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who were sure David could not win against them. But David did take the stronghold and it became the city of David. He built all around the city becoming greater and greater, for the LORD of Hosts was with him.

__11-12_Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees, carpenters and stonemasons, and they built a house for David. David then realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.

__13-16_In the mean time David took more concubines and wives and more sons and daughters were born to him. Those born to him in Jerusalem were Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.

__17-21_When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they came against him in the valley of Rephaim. David inquired of the LORD, shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand? And the LORD said, go up. I will certainly give you victory over them. And David defeated them at Baal-Perazim.

__22-25_The Philistines came up once more against Israel in the valley of Rephaim. Again David inquired of the LORD. This time the LORD told him to circle around behind them in front of the balsam trees. When he heard the wind in the leaves of the trees he should strike the Philistines decisively. Once more the LORD gave him victory.

1-5_Now David gathered thirty thousand men of Israel to go to Ball-Judah, where the ark of God had been kept up to this time. They placed the ark of God on a new cart to bring it from the house of Abinadab. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were leading the new cart. Meanwhile, David and the house of Israel were celebrating.

__6-9_When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen nearly upset the cart and Uzzah took hold of the ark to steady it. The anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah and He struck him down for his irreverence. Uzzah died before the ark. David became angry and afraid of the LORD that day. He said, how can the ark come to me?

__10-12_David was not willing to move the ark any farther. Taking it aside, he placed it in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. It remained at his house for three months and the LORD blessed him and all his household. When David heard of this he decided to have the ark brought into the city of David with gladness.

__13-17_This was done with much sacrifice, trumpet sound and dancing. Michal, Saul's daughter, witnessed David leaping and dancing before the LORD. She despised him in her heart. They had pitched a tent for the ark. It was brought into this place and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

__18-19_When David had finished offering the burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD and distributed to every person a cake of bread, another of dates and another of raisins. Then all the people departed for their own homes.

__20_But when David returned to bless his household, Michal, the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, how the king of Israel distinguished himself today! He uncovered himself in the eyes of his servants' maids as the foolish one who shamelessly uncovers himself!

__21-23_David said to Michal, I danced before the LORD, who chose me above your father and all of his house, to be ruler over Israel. So I celebrated before the LORD. I will be humbled more by other things than this, but I will still be distinguished in Israel. And Michal, the daughter of Saul, had no child to the day of her death.

1-3_Now it came about that when David was living in his new house and the LORD had given him rest on every side from his enemies, that he said to Nathan the prophet, I live in a house of cedar but the ark of God dwells in a tent. Nathan told him to do all that was in his mind for the LORD was with him.

__4-7_However, that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan saying, go to David My servant and say, are you the one who should build a house for me to live in? For I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought Israel out of Egypt. I have never asked anyone to build a house for Me.

__8-13_Tell David that I took him from pasturing sheep to rule over My people. I have blessed him and cut off his enemies and I will make him as great as anyone on earth. When his days are complete his children will follow him and one of his descendants will build a house for Me. I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

__14-20_I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me. I will correct him as a father corrects his son. His house and his kingdom shall endure before Me forever. Thus Nathan spoke to David.

Then David went in before the LORD and said, who am I that you have brought me this far? What more can I say? You know me, O Lord.

__21-29_For the sake of Thy word and according to Thine greatness you have spoken. You are great and there is none like You. Your special consideration to Israel is as to no other nation on earth. You have redeemed your people from Egypt and established them and become their God. Your words are true and Your promises sure.

1-2_After this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them taking control of their chief city. He defeated Moab killing some and letting some live, and exacting tribute from them.

__3-6_Then David defeated Hadadezer, son of Rehob king of Zobah, capturing 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers. David hamstrung the chariot horses keeping only enough for 100 chariots. When the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer, David killed 22,000 of them and they became his servants and bringing him tribute.

__7-12_David took their gold shields to Jerusalem and from their cities he also took large amounts of bronze.

When Toi, king of Hamath, heard that David had defeated Hadadezer he sent his son with articles of silver and gold, and of bronze. King David dedicated all of these articles and many others from other nations.

__13-15_So David made a name for himself killing 18,000 Arameans in the Valley of Salt. He put garrisons in Edom and the Edomites became his servants. The LORD helped David wherever he went. In his reign over Israel David administered justice and righteousness for all his people.

__16-18_Joab was over the army, Jehoshaphat was recorder. Zadok and Ahimelech were priests. Seraiah was secretary. Benaiah was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites. And David's sons were chief ministers.

1-4_Then David said, is there anyone left of the house of Saul that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake? Ziba was identified as a servant of the house of Saul. They asked him if there was someone and he said that Jonathan had a son with crippled feet who lived in the house of Machir in Lo-Dbar.

__5-8_David sent for him. His name was Mephibosheth. He prostrated himself before David. David said, do not fear. I will surely show kindness to you for the sake of your father, Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land of your grandfather, Saul. You shall eat at my table regularly. Again he prostrated himself before David.

__9-13_Then David assigned Ziba and his family to care for the land of Mephibosheth. Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants and he agreed to everything David had assigned him to do. Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem and ate at David's table as one of his sons. He was lame in both feet.

1-4_The king of Ammon died and his son, Hanun reigned in his place. David wanted to show kindness and sent men to comfort him. Ammon's princes advised Hanun that David was actually spying out their land. Hanun had half of the beards of David's servant's cut off and half of their garments stripped off showing their buttocks.

__5-12_When David heard of this he advised them to wait in Jericho until their beards grew out. The people of Ammon saw that David was unhappy with them and hired mercenary soldiers from Syria. David sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men. Joab divided his forces between himself and his brother, Abishai.

__13-18_Joab went out against the Syrians and they fled before him. When the soldiers of Ammon saw the Syrians fleeing, they also fled before Abishai. Joab returned to Jerusalem and Ammon, having suffered defeat, gathered reinforcements. David then gathered all Israel and fought them and won a deciding victory.

__19_When the Syrians saw that they had been soundly defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them. They were afraid to help Ammon after that.

1-2_After the year was finished, that is the time for going to battle, David sent Joab and all Israel to destroy Ammon. David stayed behind in Jerusalem. One evening he got out of bed and walked out on the roof of his house. A beautiful woman was taking a bath on the roof top of a near by house.

__3-6_David sent someone to find out who the woman was and learned that she was the wife of Uriah the Hittite. David sent for her and took her to his bed. Afterwards she returned to her house. When she knew that she was pregnant, she sent word to David. He then sent word to Joab to send Uriah back to Jerusalem.

__7-10_When Uriah arrived David asked for news of the war. Then he told Uriah to go home and wash his feet. Uriah left and David sent food from the kings table after him. But Uriah didn't go home. Instead he slept at the door of the king's house. When David learned of this he asked Uriah why he had not gone home.

__11-13_Uriah said to David, the ark, and Israel and Judah abide in tents. Joab and your servants are camped in an open field. Shall I go to my house to eat and drink and lie with my wife? I will not do this. So David made him wait a day, eat and drink until he was drunk. But he still would not go home to his wife.

__14-17_In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and gave it to Uriah to deliver to take back to Joab. The letter instructed Joab to put Uriah in the front where the battle was heaviest and then withdraw leaving him to perish. Joab did as instructed and Uriah died along with some other soldiers.

__18-25_Joab sent word to David concerning how the battle was going. If David were to be unhappy with the loss of life, he was to tell David that Uriah the Hittite was dead. The messenger did just as instructed. David sent a message back to Joab saying, do not let the loss of these men displease you. Overthrow the city.

__26-27_When the wife of Uriah heard of his death, she mourned for her husband. When the time of mourning was past, David sent for her and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the LORD.

1-6_The LORD sent Nathan to David. He told David about two men who lived in one city. One was very rich with much cattle and the other was very poor having one ewe lamb. A traveler came to visit the rich man who then took the poor man's lamb to feed his visitor. This made David angry. He said the rich man should surely die.

__7-12_Nathan said to David, you are the man. The LORD says He anointed you king and you have everything. Why have you struck down Uriah the Hittite and taken his wife? Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household. One of your companions will take your wives in broad daylight because of what you did in secret.

__13-15_David said, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said, the LORD has forgiven your sin and you shall not die. But your sin has given occasion for the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme. The child that is born will surely die. The LORD struck the child so that he became very sick.

__16-21_David pleaded with the LORD for the child with fasting and prostrating himself on the ground all night. He would not be comforted by any of his household. On the seventh day the child died. When David perceived that the child had died he went to his house and ate. His servants could not understand his behavior.

__22-25_David said, while the child lived there was hope and I fasted and prayed for the LORD to let the child live. Now that he is dead, why should I fast? Then David comforted Bathsheba and she conceived and gave birth to another son. They named him Solomon. The LORD loved him. Nathan named him Jedidiah for the LORD's sake.

__26-29_Joab fought against Rabbah and was about to captured the city. He sent messengers to David saying he should come up and take credit for the capture. So David gathered all the people and went to Rabbah to finish capturing it.

__30-31_He took the crown from their king. It was a talent of gold and had precious stones in it. It was placed on David's head. He brought out much spoil from the city. Its people were made to operate saws and axes, work with iron and in the brick kiln. Thus he did to all the cities of the sons of Ammon. Then they returned to Jerusalem.

1-6_Now it was after this that Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister by the name of Tamar. Amnon, another son of David, loved her. His desire for her was so strong he made himself ill. Amnon's friend, Jonadab, helped him devise a plan to get her alone with him. He would get David to send her to be his nurse.

__7-14_David told Tamar to prepare food for Amnon so she took dough and made cakes for him. When she brought them for him to eat, he took hold of her and made his real intentions known. She resisted but he forced her.

__15-19_Afterwards Amnon hated Tamar and would have nothing to do with her. He had her thrown out of his house. Virgin daughters of the king wore dresses with long sleeves. She tore these from her garment and put ashes on her head.

__20-22_Absalom asked her if Amnon had done this to her. Then Absalom told her not to do anything more. So she remained in his house. King David heard about all of this and was angry with Amnon. Absalom would not speak to Amnon.

__23-29_About two years later at sheep shearing time Absalom had a party and invited the king, David could not come. Absalom asked permission to invite Amnon with all his other sons. David agreed. Absalom told his servants that when Amnon was merry with wine to kill him when he gave the command. They did this and the other sons fled.

__30-39_Word came to David that Absalom had killed all his other sons. He tore his clothes and lay on the ground. Then his nephew brought news that only Amnon had been killed in revenge for what he had done to Tamar. David and his servants wept bitterly. Absalom fled to the king of Geshur for three years while David longed for him.

1-7_Joab knew that David wanted to bring Absalom back. He employed the services of a wise woman. He told her to approach the king as though she was mourning. She was to tell the king that her two sons had struggled together and one had killed the other. Now the living one was condemned to die and their name would not continue.

__8-14_When David heard her story he said he would give orders to save her son's life. Then the woman asked permission to say something else. The king was guilty for not bringing back his banished son. God does not take life but plans ways so that the banished one may not be cast out from him.

__15-20_The woman continued, just as you spoke comfort to me in the need I presented to you, may the king discern good and evil in his own matters.

Then David asked her if Joab had a hand in her request to him? She admitted that he had asked her to come to the king.

__21-24_Then the king told Joab to bring Absalom back. He would be allowed to return to his own house. Yet he did not see the king's face.

__25-29_In all Israel there was no one as handsome as Absalom. At the end of each year he cut his hair and it weighed 200 shekels. Three sons were born to Absalom and a daughter who was very beautiful. Absalom lived two full years without seeing the king's face.

__30-31_Twice he sent for Joab to ask him to go to the king for him, but Joab would not come. So he told his servants to burn Joab's barley field which adjoined his own field. Then Joab came to him and asked why he had done this.

__32-33_Absalom replied, you brought me home from Geshur but I have not seen the king. It would have been better for me to have stayed in Geshur. If I have sinned, let him kill me. So Joab went to David and told him all that Absalom had said. Thus Absalom came before the king and prostrated himself on the ground. And David kissed him.

1-4_Absalom provided for himself a horse and chariot and fifty men to run before him. He would get up early and stand by the gate where people came with their grievances for the king to pass judgment on. He would talk with the claimant and then say he wished he was appointed judge so he could give justice.

__5-6_When a man came near to prostrate himself before Absalom he would place his hand on him and lift him up and kiss him. He used this method to steal away the hearts of the men of Israel.

__7-11_At the end of four years Absalom asked permission of the king to go to Hebron to keep a vow he had made to the LORD. The king gave his permission. Then Absalom sent spies through out Israel saying, when you hear the trumpet you shall say, Absalom is king. He then took 200 men to Jerusalem who didn't know of his plan.

__12-14_Absalom sent for Ahithophel who was one of David's counselors. The conspiracy was strong and Absalom increased every day. News reached David saying that the hearts of the people were turning to Absalom. He decided to flee with his servants from Jerusalem to save the city from being involved in war.

__15-18_David's servants assured him they were ready to do whatever he wanted them to do. So the king left with his household. Ten concubines remained behind to take care of the house. All the Cherethites, all the Pelethites and all the Gittites, six hundred men who had been with him from the beginning, passed on before him.

__19-23_Then the king offered Ittai the Gittite the chance to go to his home. He was a recent follower of David. But he would not go. He said he was ready to die for David. He and all the people, including their little ones, passed over the brook Kidron on their way to the wilderness.

__24-29_Zadoc the priest and all the Levites came carrying the Ark of the Covenant of God. Abiathar also came. David asked Zadoc to take the Ark of God back to Jerusalem. If he found favor in the sight of the LORD, then he would be back. He also asked Zadoc to send word by his grandsons of anything he heard.

__30-32_David wept as he climbed the Mount of Olives. His head was covered and his feet were bare. Someone told him that Ahithophel was among the conspirators with Absalom. David then prayed to the LORD that Ahithophel's counsel would be foolishness. As David came to the summit Hushai met him with a torn coat and dust on his head.

__33-37_David asked him to return to the city and thwart the counsel of Ahithophel. He could send word of what was going on by telling Zadoc who would get the information to him. So Hushai, David's friend came to Jerusalem and Absalom came into the city.

1-2_After David had passed the summit, Ziba, Mephibosheth's servant, came with a couple of saddled donkeys carrying two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred clusters of raisins, a hundred summer fruits, and a jug of wine. He said the donkeys were for David's family to ride and the food was for the young men.

__3-4_David asked, where is Mephibosheth? Ziba said, he is waiting in Jerusalem for the kingdom to be restored to him. David then gave Ziba everything that had been Mephibosheth's. Ziba prostrated himself before David and promised to serve him forever.

__5-8_When David came to Bahurim, Shimei, a man of Saul's family, came out cursing continually. He threw stones at David and his servants, even at his mighty men. He called David a worthless fellow who shed blood. He blamed David for the deaths of Saul's family.

__9-14_Abishai offered to cut his head off. Let him alone, David said. He may be speaking what the LORD has told him to say. Perhaps the LORD will look at my affliction and return good to me in place of cursing. So David and his men went on and Shimei continued to walk parallel to him and throw stones and dust at him.

__15-19_Absalom and all the people entered Jerusalem. So did Ahithophel. Hushai, David's friend, approached Absalom and said, long live the king. Absalom asked him where was his loyalty to David? Hushai replied, I will remain with the one chosen by the LORD and the people of Israel. I am happy to serve his son as I served him.

__20-23_Absalom asked Ahithophel what he should do next? Ahithophel said, go in to your father's concubines. This will make you odious to your father and all Israel will know it. It will strengthen your position. So he pitched a tent on the palace roof where all Israel could see him taking David's concubines. He trusted Ahithophel.

1-4_Ahithophel asked Absalom to let him pursue David with twelve thousand troups. He is weary as are the people with him. But my goal will to be to strike down the king alone. Then his soldiers will come over to your side and there will be peace. This plan pleased both Absalom and the elders of Israel.

__5-10_Absalom decided to see if Hushai agreed with this counsel. When Hushai was brought to Absalom he was told of Ahithophel's plan. Hushai pointed out problems with the plan. David was experienced in war and was probably hiding where he would not be found. His mighty men were expert in warfare. Absalom's people would be slaughted.

__11-13_Hushai said that Absalom should wait until men could be gathered from Dan to Beersheba. There would need to be a very great number of soldiers. And Absalom should personally go into battle. If David is hiding in some city, they should then drag down it walls and completely destroy that city and its inhabitants.

__14-15_Absalom and his men liked Hushai's counsel better than Ahithophel's for the LORD had ordained to thwart the good counsel of Ahithophel in order to bring calamity to Absalom. Word was sent to David through Zadoc and Abiathar concerning Ahithophel's counsel and what Hushai had counsel and that Absalom had chosen Hushai's plan.

__16-17_David was told to not spend the night at the fords of the river but to cross over and hide in the wilderness, lest everyone would be destroyed. Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at Enrogel and a maid servant was sent with this message for them to take to David, because they could not be seen entering the city.

__18-20_A young boy did see them and told Absalom. Jonathan and Ahimaaz left quickly and hid in the well at the house of a man in Bahurim. A woman covered the well and scattered grain on it. Absalom's men asked if she had seen the two men. She said they had crossed over the brook. They looked for the two but could not find them.

__21-23_After they had departed, they came out of the well and took their message to David. David and his men crossed the Jordan that night and by morning not one remained.

Now when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he went home, set his house in order and hanged himself.

__24-29_Then David came to Mahanaim as Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel. Absalom had set Amasa, who was related to Joab's mother, over his army.

Men of the area came to David bringing beds, basins, pottery, wheat, barley, flour, parched grain, beans, lentils, honey, curds, sheep and cheese. Everyone was hungry.

1-3_David numbered the people with him and organized them under commanders of thousands and hundreds. He sent them out in three groups commanded by Joab, Abishai and Ittai the Gittite. David planned to go out with them but they would not hear of it. Absalom is not after us. He is after you. You are worth ten thousand of one of us.

__4-8_David said, whatever you think best. As they left for battle, David asked Joab, Abishai and Ittai, to deal kindly with Absalom.

The people went to battle against Israel in the forest of Ephraim. The defeat of Israel was great. They lost twenty thousand men. The forest devoured more people than the sword.

__9-11_Absalom met David's servants while riding his mule. As he rode under the thick branches of a great oak he was left hanging with his head caught fast in the oak by his hair. One of the men saw this and told Joab. Joab asked why he hadn't killed Absalom. Joab said that he would have given him ten pieces of silver for killing Absalom.

__12-15_The man replied, I would not have done it for a thousand pieces of sliver. I heard the king tell you and the other commanders to protect Absalom. Had I actually killed him and David was unhappy with me, you would have remained quiet. Joab then went and speared Absalom through his heart and his armor bearer helped him.

__16-18_Then Joab blew the trumpet and David's people left off pursuing Israel. They threw Absalom in a deep pit and piled a great heap of stones over him, and all Israel went home.

Absalom had no son so he had set up a pillar in his name in the King's Valley. It remained there.

__19-23_Then Ahimaaz, Zadoc's son, took the news of Israel's defeat to David. But Joab stopped him and sent a Cushite instead. He said to tell the king what he had seen. Ahimaaz persitted in asking to go. Joab let him and he passed up the Cushite.

__24-26_David was sitting between the two gates. There was a watchman on the roof. He called down that a man was running by himself. David said, if he is by himself, it is good news. He came nearer and nearer. Then the watchman saw another man running, and David said, this one is also bringing good news.

__27_The watchman said that he thought he recognized the first man to be Ahimaaz, the son of Zadoc. The king said, this is a good man and he comes with good news.

__28-30_When he arrived, Ahimaaz called out to the king and said, all is well. And he prostrated himself before the king, saying, blessed be the LORD God, who had delivered up the men who lifted their hands against you my llord the king. But when asked about Absalom he said he did not know what had happened to him.

__31-33_When the Cushite arrived he said, I have good news. The LORD has freed you from those who rose up against you. Then David asked about Absalom. The Cushite said, may all your enemies be as that young man. David was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. O Absalom. I wish I was dead instead of you.

1-6_Joab learned that the king was weeping. Instead of rejoicing, everyone was mourning with him. Everyone went home quietly and no one was happy. Joab came to where the king was and told him that he had brought shame on his servants who had saved his family. He said if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead you would be happy.

__7-10_It is time for you to get up and go out and speak kindly to your servants. If you do not do this, surely the end will be worse than all the evil that has come in your entire life. So David went out and sat in the gate to meet the people. Everyone was dispirited. As they realized that Absalom whom they had crowned king was gone.

__11-14_David went to Zadoc and Abiathar the priests and asked them to speak to the elders in Judah. Ask them why they are slow to welcome me back. Am I not one of the family? And he said to tell Amasa that he would command the army in place of Joab. Thus he turned the hearts of all the men of Judah and they all welcomed him back.

__15-18_David returned as far as the Jordan. Judah came out to meet him and bring him across the river. Then Shimei, who had cursed David as he fled, hurried to meet David. Ziba also came to bring over the king's household. They tried to do what was right in the king's sight. Then Shimei fell down before David as he was about to cross.

__19-23_He said to the king, though I am guilty, please do not remember my wrong toward you when you came out of Jerusalem. I know I sinned. Abishai wanted to put him to death for having cursed the LORD's anointed. David said this is not a day for anyone to die. And he assured Shimei that he would not die.

__24-30_Mephibosheth came out to meet David. He had not dressed for the occasion. David asked him why he hadn't come with him when he fled Jerusalem? Mephibosheth said that his servant had deceived him and then slandered him. David then said, I have decided that you and Ziba shall divide your land. Mephibosheth said he can have it all.

__31-39_Barzillai, who had brought essential things for David at Mahanaim when he fled, came to meet him. David wanted him to return to Jerusalem with him but Barzillai asked to cross the Jordan with him and then return to his own home. After everyone had crossed over, David kissed Barzillai and blessed him and he went home.

__40-43_David went on to Gilgal. The men of Israel came to meet him saying, why has Judah stolen you away from us? Hard words were said between Judah and Israel as to who had the most right to bring the king back. Judah said we are closely related to him. Israel said we have ten parts in the king. Judah's words were the more harsh.

1-3_A worthless fellow named Sheba turned Israel against David. But Judah remained loyal to him. At this time David sequestered the ten concubines he had left to care for the house during Absalom's rebellion. They were placed under guard and remained as widows all their days because of what Absalom had done to them.

__4-6_Then David asked Amasa to call out the men of Judah within the next three days. He went out but took longer than the appointed time. David told Abishai that Sheba would do more harm than Absalom had done. He was to take David's men and pursue Sheba before he had time to fortify himself.

__7-13_Joab's men went along with the Cherethites, the Pelethites and all the mighty men. When they got to the large stone which is Gibeon, Amasa showed up. Joab met him with deceit and killed him. Then Joab and Abishai pursued Sheba. Until Amasa's body was removed from the road many did not follow after.

__14-19_As Joab went through Israel on the way to Abel they gathered others and they came and besieged Sheba in that city, trying to topple its wall. A wise woman called from the top of the wall wanting to talk with Joab. She said, I am one of the peaceable and faithful in Israel. Why should you destroy the heritage of the LORD?

__20-22_Joab answered that he didn't want to destroy the city. He wanted Sheba who had rebelled against David. Hand him over and we will depart. She agreed to this and the people of the city cut off his head and threw it down to Joab. Then Joab blew the trumpet and the Joab's army dispersed and Joab returned to Jerusalem.

__23-26_Now Joab was over the whole army of Israel and Benaiah was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites. Adoram was over the forced labor and Jehoshaphat was the recorder. Sheva was scribe and Zadoc and Abiathar were priests. And Ira was also priest to David.

1-3_There was a famine in the days of David. It lasted for three years. David inquired of the LORD and He said the famine was because of the injustice of Saul against the Gibeonites. In his zeal he had put many of them to death. So the king asked the Gibeonites what could be done to recitfy the breaking of the covenant with them?

__4-9_The Gibeonites said they didn't want money. Give us seven sons of Saul, who planned to exterminate us. We will hang them. David granted their request but he spared Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son because of the oath he and Jonathan had made to each other. The men were put to death in the first days of the barley harvest.

__10-14_Rizpah, Saul's concubine and the mother of two of the men, protected the bodies from the birds and animals day and night. So David took the bones of Saul and Jonathan from Jabesh-Gilead and gathered the bones of those who had been hanged and buried them all in the grave of Kish, Saul's father. Then the famine was lifted.

__15-17_The Philistines went to war with Israel once more. Ishbibenob was among the giants of the Philistines. He carried a spear weighing three hundred shekels. He intended to kill David. Abishai came to David's aid and killed the giant. Then David's men said he must not go out to battle with them any more.

__18-22_There were more wars with the Philistines and more giants were killed. There was a Philistine with six fingers on each hand six toes on each foot. When he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David's brother, struck him down. Four Philistine giants fell by the hand of David and his servants.

1-7_The last words of David are written as a poem expressing his dependance on God and His everlasting covenant.

__8-14_The names of David's mighty men are given along with their accomplishments.

There was Josheb-Basshebeth who killed eight hundred by himself.

There was the time David and his thirty chief men were camped in the cave of Adullam and the Philistines were in Bethlehem at that time.

__15-17_David expressed a craving for water from the well by the gate of Bethlehem. Three of the mighty men broke into the camp of the Philistines, drew water and brought it back to David. He would not drink it but poured it out to the LORD. He said, far be it from me to drink the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives.

__18-23_There was Abishai, the brother of Joab, and chief of the thirty, who killed three hundred with his spear.

Then there was Benaiah who killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also killed a lion in a pit on a snowy day. David appointed him over his guard.

__24-39_Many others are mentioned, including Uriah the Hittite. Thirty seven in all.

1-9_There was the time the LORD's anger burned against Israel because David had numbered Israel. Joab tried to discourage the numbering, saying with the LORD's blessing on each of them was like a hundred men of the enemy. But David insisted. The counting took nine months and twenty days. Joab reported eight hundred thousand men of war.

__10-12_David's heart troubled him after he had numbered the people. He confessed his sin to the LORD saying he had done foolishly. In the morning the word of the LORD came to him through Gad, the seer. The LORD offered David three choices. Choose which I may do to you.

__13-15_Gad said the LORD was giving him three choices: seven years of famine, three months of being pursued by his foes, or three days of pestilence in Israel. David felt great distress as he said, let me fall into the hands of the LORD for he is merciful. He chose three days of pestilence. Seventy thousand men of Israel died.

__16-17_When the angel of the LORD stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD stopped him and said it is enough. When David saw the angel striking down the people, he said, behold, it is I who has sinned. These people have done nothing wrong. Let your hand be against me and my father's house.

__18-21_Gad came to David and told him to erect an alter to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. David went to the place and before he got there Araunah came out and bowed down to David asking why he had come. David said he wanted to buy the threshing floor so he could build an alter to the LORD to halt the plague.

__22-25_Araunah offered it to David along with the oxen for a burnt offering and the threshing sledges and the yokes for the wood. David said he would not make an offering that cost him nothing. He bought everything for fifty shekels of silver. He built the alter, made the burnt offering and the peace offering, and then plague was stopped.
