Theme: God is in control of the world despite the apparent triumph of evil. Habakkuk cannot understand why the people of Judah go unpunished for their sin. He also asks why God would use the wicked Babylonians to punish His people? God is the all powerful Creator Who will carry out His plan.

1-4_How long. O Lord, will I call for help and you will not hear me? The law is ignored and justice is never upheld. The wicked surround the righteous and justice is perverted.

__5-11_Be astonished. I am doing something in your day. I am raising up the Chaldeans to serve My purpose. Nevertheless, they will be held accountable because they make their strength their god.

__12-17_Art You not from everlasting, O Lord, my God, my Holy One? You have appointed them to judge. Thou hast established them to correct. Will you allow them to keep destroying nations?

1-4_I will stand at my guard post waiting to hear what He will tell me.

The LORD answered me in a vision. He told me to write what He shows me. The vision is for a time yet to come and it will surely come to pass.

The soul of the one who is proud is not right, but the righteous will live by his faith.

__5-11_Wine betrays the haughty man. In the end he is never satisfied. A woe is pronounced on the one who increases what is not his by making himself rich with loans. This one will be overtaken with his own method of misery.

__12-17_Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and violence. The day is coming when the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD.

Woe to you who make your neighbor drink. The cup in the LORD's right hand will come around to you and you will be utterly disgraced.

__18-20_What good is an idol after its maker has finished carving it? His handiwork is speechless. How foolish to take a piece of wood or stone and worship it. Even after it is overlaid with silver or gold, it cannot breathe.

By contrast, The LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silent before Him.

1-7_A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet. Lord, I have heard the report about You and I am afraid. Revive Your work and remember mercy.

The splendor of the Holy One covers the heavens and the earth is full of His praise. His ways are everlasting.

__8-15_Did the LORD rage against the rivers or show His wrath against the seas? His bow is made ready to take vengeance. In Your presence the sun and the moon stand still. You went forth for the salvation of Your people. You have struck the head of the house of evil and have pierced him with his own spears.

__16-19_What I have heard makes me tremble. I am weak at the thought of what is coming when we are finally invaded.

No matter if crops fail, flocks are cut off, and there are no cattle in the stalls. Yet I will exult in the LORD. I will rejoice in the God of my salvation. He makes me to walk on high places.
