1-7_Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, to those who feel secure in Samaria, and to the distinguished of the greatest of nations. You recline in luxury and eat sumptuously. You sing beautiful songs while drinking wine from sacrificial bowls. You are not grieved by your own apostasy. You will be the first to go into exile.

__8-11_The LORD God has sworn by Himself that He is very unhappy with Jacob. You have turned justice into poison and righteousness into wormwood. Behold, I am going to raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel, declares the LORD of Hosts.

1-3_The LORD God showed me that He was forming a swarm of locust at the time the spring crops were beginning to sprout and the king's mowing was finished. When the swarm had finished eating the vegetation I asked the LORD to pardon Jacob and He changed His mind.

__4-9_The LORD showed me that He planned to contend with them using fire. I asked Him to pardon them, so the LORD changed His mind. I saw the LORD standing by a wall with a plumb line in His hand. He asked me what I saw. I said that I saw a plumb line. The LORD said, I am about to measure my people with a plumb line. I will lay them to waste.

__10-13_Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam, king of Israel, saying, Amos has conspired against you. The land of Israel cannot endure his words. He is saying things like, Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will surely go into exile. Amaziah told Amos to do his prophesying in Judah.

__14-15_Amos replied, I am not a prophet or the son of a prophet. I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. The LORD took me from following the flock and told me to prophecy to my people Israel.

__16-17_Now hear the word of the LORD. You have told me to not prophecy against Israel. The LORD says that your wife will become a harlot in this city. Your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword. Your land will be parceled out to others and you will die upon unclean soil. Israel will certainly go into exile.

1-6_The LORD told me that the end has come for Israel. Hear this, He said. You who trample the needy and do away with the humble, you long for worship time to be over so that you can carry on business. You cheat with dishonest scales and buy the helpless for money. You treat the needy as though you are selling wheat.

__7-14_The LORD has sworn that He will no longer overlook your sins. He will turn your festivals into mourning and your songs into lamentation. In the days to come He will send a famine on the land. It will not be a famine of bread and water but rather a famine of the word of the LORD. They will seek His word and not find it.

__8-12_The LORD's eyes are on this sinful kingdom and He will destroy it from the face of the earth, yet, not completely. He will shake the house of Israel among the nations as grain is shaken in a sieve. All the sinners of My people will die by the sword.

__13-15_Behold the day is coming, declares the LORD, when the plowman will overtake the reaper and the one treading grapes will overtake him who sows seed. The mountains will drip sweet wine, and all the hills will be dissolved. The day will come when I restore My people Israel. They will rebuild, plant and harvest and never be uprooted again.
