Grace be unto you, and peace from them both. 2 We always thank God for all of you when we pray. 3 We remember your work of faith, your labor of love and your patient hope in the LORD Jesus Christ and God our Father, 4 knowing that He has chosen you. 5 The gospel we gave you was not in word only, but with conviction in the power of the Holy Spirit. You have seen what kind of men we have been for your benefit. 6 And you imitated us and the LORD, having received the word in much tribulation, but with joy in the Holy Spirit. 7 You became an example to all believers in Macedonia and Achaia. 8 For the word of the LORD has sounded forth from you in both of these places. 9 They know how you have turned from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come. 1 Thessalonians 2 - RWB Paraphrase (20 V) See Chapter at a Glance See Comments Go to top 1 You know that we did not come to you in vain. 2 After our suffering in Philippi, we came to you and spoke of the gospel of God with boldness amid much opposition. 3 We did not speak in error or with impurity or deceit. 4 God entrusted us with the gospel and that is what we spoke. We didn't say what was pleasing to men, but to God, who examines the heart. 5 God is our witness that we did not use flattery, or any pretext of greed. 6 We did not look for glory from you or anyone else, even though we were apostles of Christ and might have asserted our authority. 7 We were gentle with you, as a nursing mother cares for her child. 8 Because we thought so much of you, we were please to not only bring the gospel to you, but offered our lives because you are so dear to us. 9 You will recall our labor and hardship as we proclaimed the gospel to you night and day without laying any burden on you. 10 You are witnesses, along with God, to how we behaved blamelessly toward you believers. 11 We exhorted, encouraged and implored each one of you as a father does with his own children. 12 We wanted you to walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory. 13 We thank God that you accepted His word rather than the word of men. And His word performs its work in those who believe. 14 For you have become imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. You endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews, 15 who killed the LORD Jesus Christ and the prophets, and drove us out. God is not pleased with them. 16 They have hindered us from speaking the gospel to the Gentiles and have filled up the measure of their sins. Wrath has come upon them to the utmost. 17 And we, having been taken away from you for a little while, though not in spirit, are eager to see you again. 18 We wanted to come to you more than once, but Satan prevented us from doing so. 19 For what is our hope and crown of rejoicing? It will be you being present at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 20 For you are our glory and joy. 1 Thessalonians 3 - RWB Paraphrase (13 V) See Chapter at a Glance See Comments Go to top 1 When we could wait no longer we decided it best to be left at Athens, 2 and send our fellow worker and brother, Timothy, to strengthen and encourage you in the faith. 3 We do not want you to be disturbed by our afflictions, for you know that this is our destiny. 4 While we were with you we told you in advance that we would suffer affliction and that is what has happened. 5 So because I could wait no longer, I sent Timothy to learn of your continued faith, fearing that perhaps the tempter might have won you over, and our labor with you would have been in vain. 6 But now Timothy has returned with the good news of your faith and love, and that you remember us with loving kindness. 7 Your faith has comforted us even as we experience distress and affliction. 8 Our lives are wrapped up in your standing fast in the LORD. 9 The joy we experience because of your faith seems even greater than the thanks we can give to God for you. 10 Day and night we pray earnestly that we may see you again so as to help any lack in your faith. 11 We are asking our God and Father, and Jesus our Lord, to make this possible. 12 And may the LORD cause your love to abound for one another, and for all people, just as our love does for you, 13 so that He may establish your hearts without blame in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints. 1 Thessalonians 4 - RWB Paraphrase (18 V) See Chapter at a Glance See Comments Go to top 1 Finally brethren, we exhort you by the LORD Jesus to receive from us the instruction as to how to walk and please God so that you will continue to grow. 2 You know the commandments we gave by the authority of Jesus. 3 It is God's will that you abstain from immorality, 4 so that each one of you knows how to control his own body in sanctification and honor, 5 rather than in lustful passion, as do the Gentiles who do not know God. 6 No one is to defraud his brother, because the LORD avenges this. We have solemnly warned you of this. 7 For God has not called us to impurity, but to holiness. 8 He who rejects this is not rejecting man, but God, who gives us His Holy Spirit. 9 We do not need to remind you to love each other, for God has taught this to you. 10 Indeed, you have practiced this toward all the brethren in Macedonia. But we encourage you to do even more.
11 Make it your goal to lead quiet lives, attending to your own business and working with your hands, just as we have said previously.
12 This way you will impress outsiders with your behavior and the fact that you have no needs.
13 We do not want you to be uninformed about those who have fallen asleep, so that you will not grieve as some do who are without hope.
14 For just as we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring to Himself those who fell asleep believing in Jesus.
15 And we say to you by the word of the LORD, those of us who remain alive until our Lord comes back, will not go to be with Him ahead of those who have fallen asleep.
16 For the LORD Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and the trumpet of God, and those who died having placed their trust in Christ, shall rise first.
17 Then we who are alive until that time will be caught up with them in the clouds and together we shall meet Him in the air. And so, we shall always be with the LORD.
18 Therefore, comfort one another with these words.
12 And brethren, we ask that you appreciate those who diligently labor over you and instruct you in the LORD.
13 Highly esteem them for their love and work. And be at peace among yourselves.
14 We urge you, brethren, to admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak and be patient with everyone.
15 Never render evil for evil. Seek what is good, both for one another and for all men.
16 Rejoice always,
17 pray without ceasing,
18 and in everything give thanks, for this is God's will in Christ Jesus for you.
19 Do not quench the Spirit.
20 Do not despise prophetic utterances.
21 Prove all things and hold fast to that which is good.
22 Abstain from all appearances of evil.
23 Now may the God of peace completely sanctify you. And I pray that God will preserve your spirit, soul and body, until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 He who calls you is faithful and will bring it to pass.
25 Brethren, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.
27 I adjure you by the LORD to have this letter read to all the brethren.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
