Deuteronomy - At A Glance

Theme: A reminder of what God had done for Israel and to encourage them to rededicate their lives to Him. Choices make a difference for good or bad. It is important to pass on God's truth to future generations. God desires that His truth be in our hearts and minds.

1-8_This is what Moses said to Israel on the east side of the Jordan River before Israel entered the promised land. It was the 40th years on the first day of the eleventh month.

__9-18_Moses said to them, I was not able to bear the burden of leading so great a multitude of people. Judges were appointed and commanded to deal wisely and fairly in their work for you.

__19-33_As we came to Kadesh-Barnea you wanted to send spies into the good land. When they came back they reported that it was a very good land but giants inhabited it and you were not willing to go up.

__34-40_The LORD heard your fear and lack of trust and swore that everyone twenty years and older would not see the good land. Only Joshua and Caleb would go in and those less than twenty years of age.

__41-46_Your immediate response was that you had sinned and were now ready to go up and take the good land. When you tried to do this, the Amorites soundly defeated you and you wept before the LORD but He would not hear you.

1-25_The LORD has been with you for forty years. You have lacked nothing. The LORD explained that He would not give you the land belonging to Edom and Moab. And all the men of war that God said would not see Canaan have now died. Now is the time to enter the land God is giving you.

__26-46_Sihon king of Heshbon turned out to be very unfriendly and came to make war against you. God delivered you from him. You captured their cities and utterly destroyed them. There was no city too hard for you. You have gone wherever the LORD our God commanded you.

1-22_Moses reviewed the battles with Og, king of Bashan. They utterly destroyed sixty cities. This land was given to the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh. They were to settle their families and then help the other tribes take the land west of the Jordan River. Do not fear. The LORD is the one fighting for you.

__23-29_Moses pleaded with God to be allowed to cross the Jordan and see the fair land. The LORD said, no! Go up to the top of mount Pisgah and view the good land from there.

1-8_Then Moses said, O Israel, listen to the statues and judgments I am teaching you. Do not add to or subtract from what you have been taught. What nation is there with a God such as our God? What nation is there with statutes and judgments such as has been given to us?

__9-14_Remember how the LORD spoke audibly to you at Mount Horeb. Remember how He declared His covenant with you. Remember the Ten Commandments He wrote on the two tables of stone. Do not forget any of this when you go over to possess the good land.

__15-41_Worship nothing and no one except the God Who has been with you all this time and Who you heard speak on Mount Horeb. If you forget Him you will be scattered in other lands. Has any other peoples heard the voice of God from the midst of the fire?

Then Moses set apart three cities of refuge on the east side of the Jordan.

1-6_Then Moses summoned all Israel to review God's Ten Commandments. The LORD had spoken these to them from the mountain and from the midst of fire saying, I am the LORD Who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

__7_You shall have no other gods before me.

__8-10_You shall not make an idol or a likeness of anything in heaven, on earth, or under the sea. You shall not worship of serve them. For I am a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of the fathers on to the third and fourth generation and showing loving kindness to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

__11_You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave unpunished those who take His name in vain.

__12-15_Observe the Sabbath to keep it holy as the LORD God has commanded. You are to work six days but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. No one, man or animal, is to work. You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt and the LORD your God brought you out with a mighty hand. So keep the Sabbath.

__16_Honor your father and mother as the LORD has commanded that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

__17-21_You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.

__22-33_These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire. He wrote them on two tables of stone and gave them to me. You were afraid to be in the presence of the LORD. He heard your words and said, O that these people would always have such a heart to fear me and keep my commandments forever.

1-25_Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, and the LORD is One. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your might. Keep these words in your heart, teaching them diligently to your sons. It will be righteousness for you if you are careful to observe all His commandments.

1-26_When the LORD gives you the land which He will take away from the nations in the land, you are to utterly destroy them. You are not to intermarry with them. You are to make no covenant with them. You must tear down all their worship sights, alters, sacred pillars and graven images. You are a holy people.

1-3_All the commandment the LORD has given are for your good that you may live and multiply and go in and possess the land. You are to remember all the ways the LORD has provided for you. He fed you and taught you that man does not live by bread alone but by every word from the mouth of the LORD.

__4-10_Your clothing did not wear out and your feet did not swell for these forty years. You are entering a land of abundance in all good things. When you have eaten and are satisfied remember to bless the LORD for His goodness to you.

__11-20_Beware of forgetting the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, His ordinances and His statutes. You shall remember that it is the LORD who gives you power to get wealth. If you forget you will perish like the nations before you that you dispossess.

1-29_Never think for an instant that the LORD has driven out the nations before you because you are righteous. God has done this for you to confirm His oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It is not because of your righteousness for you are a stubborn people. Remember all the times you have sinned against the LORD and He has forgiven you.

1-15_What does the LORD require of you O Israel but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him. You are to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul, and keep His commandments and statutes which are for your own good.

__16-22_Circumcise your heart and stiffen your neck no more. For the LORD your God is an awesome God who does not show partiality. You shall fear Him and serve Him. You shall cling to Him. He is your praise and He is your God. He has done great and awesome things for you.

1-32_Moses reminded Israel that they must keep God's commandments and remember how the LORD delivered them from Egypt. He also reminded them of what happened to Dathan and Abiram when the earth swallowed them up. God was promising a blessing if they obeyed and a curse if they disobeyed.

1-32_Moses reminded them that they must destroy all the places of worship belonging to the nations they were dispossessing. After you possess the land the LORD will choose a place for you to come and worship. You are not to use places to sacrifice that were formerly used for the cultic worship of the land before you possessed it.

1-18_If someone claims to have a prophecy or dream from God you shall watch to see if it comes true. Then you will know if it was from God. You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him. If someone entices you to serve other gods all the people shall stone him.

1-29_You are sons of the LORD you God. You shall not cut yourselves or shave your forehead for the sake of the dead. You shall not eat any detestable thing. Of the animals you may eat are those that chews the cud and have divided hooves. Of the fish you may eat what has fins and scales. You shall not eat anything that dies of itself.

1-23_At the end of every seven years you shall grant a remission of debts. You are to help the poor. You shall consecrate the firstborn of your flock to the LORD. You shall eat them on the LORD's feast days at the place the LORD will choose. And you are not to eat its blood. You pour that on the ground.

1-15_You are to observe the Passover to the LORD your God in the place the LORD will choose. You cannot observe it in your own towns. Seven weeks later you are to observe the Feast of Weeks. You shall celebrate the Feast of Booths seven days after you have gathered your grain on the threshing floor. Do this for seven days.

__16-22_Three times a year all your males shall appear before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses: the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks and the Feast of Booths. Do not come to the LORD empty handed.

You are to appoint judges in all your towns and justice is to be administer fairly to all.

1-20_Your sacrifices to the LORD are to be without blemish.

If you are certain that someone is serving other gods, the people must stone that person, but only if there are two or three witnesses.

If you decide you want a king you must let the LORD your God choose the king for you, and he must have his own copy of the law to read.

1-22_Because the Levites have no portion in the land you are to give them the First Fruits as his portion.

Anyone who causes his child to pass through the fire, or casts spells or calls up the dead, is detestable and the LORD will drive him out. You dispossessed the nations who practiced these things. You must not do as they did.

1-21_You are to set aside three cities west of the Jordan that will be cities of refuge. There must be good roads leading to them and they should be evenly spaces throughout your territory. A single witness shall not condemn a man but instead there must be two or three. If someone is guilty, do not show him pity. Life for life, eye for eye, etc.

1-20_When you go into battle against your enemies and see horses and people more numerous than you, do not be afraid. The LORD Who brought you out of Egypt is with you. If someone is frightened, send him home. When fighting a city do not destroy it trees. You may, however, cut down trees that are not fruit trees to construct siege works.

You shall not detest the Edomite or the Egyptian.

Give runaway slaves a place to live.

Keep your vows to the LORD.

When you enter your neighbor's vineyard eat only to satisfy your hunger.

1-22_If a man divorces his wife and she marries again, under no circumstance is he to marry her again.

When a man marries he is to be exempt from war for one year so that he may make his wife happy.

Fathers shall not be put to death for the sins of their sons and vice versa.

Do not muzzle an ox while he is threshing.

Be sure to use just weights and measures.

__29_The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of the LORD.

1-8_After Moses spoke these things he said that he was one hundred and twenty years old. The LORD had told him that he would not cross the Jordan. But, he said, God will go ahead of you to destroy the nations. Be strong and courageous.

__9-13_So Moses wrote the law and gave it to the priests and Levites and told them to read it to the people at the end of every seven years at the remission of debts during the Feast of Booths. Do this that the people may hear, and learn, and fear the LORD, and be careful to observe the words of His law.

__14-30_The LORD then said to Moses, the time is near for you to die. Call Joshua to the tent of meeting and commission him.

And God gave Moses a song to give to Israel.

1-43_The song said: God's work is perfect. He is faithful and righteous. He has set boundaries for the sons of men. He gave Jacob's people a portion. When they spurn Him He will turn His face from them. The LORD will vindicate those who are His and avenge the blood of His servants.

__44-52_When Moses had finished speaking the words of the song, the LORD told him to go up on Mount Nebo opposite Jericho and look at the land of Canaan. You shall die for you cannot go into the land because you broke faith with Me by striking the rock the second time. But you shall see at a distance the land I am giving Israel.

__18-22_Rejoice Zebulun and Issachar in all you do, especially in what you take from the sea and the hidden treasure of the sand.

The LORD bless Gad because he has done the LORD's work.

Dan is a lion's whelp.

__23-29_Naphtali is full of the LORD's blessing to take possession of the sea and the land to the south.

May Asher be most favored and dip his foot in oil. Israel dwells in security because of God's favor.

The tribe of Simeon was not mention in these blessings but his tribe was mentioned in Deuteronomy 27.

1-7_Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo which is opposite of Jericho and the LORD showed him all the land from Gilead as far as Dan and from the sea in the west to the land east of the Jordan. Although Moses was one hundred and twenty years old his eyes saw clearly and he still had vigor.

__8-12_The children of Israel wept for Moses thirty days. Joshua was filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. There had been no prophet in Israel like Moses whom the LORD knew face to face.
