The Coming Judgment Of Edom
1 This is Obadiah's vision. Thus says the LORD GOD concerning Edom. We have heard a report from the LORD. An envoy has been sent among the nations saying, "Arise. Go into battle against Edom." 2 "I am going to make you small among the nations. You are greatly despised." 3 "Your arrogance has deceived you. You live in the lofty clefts of the rock and say to yourself, 'Who can bring me down to earth?'" 4 The LORD says, "Though you have built high like the eagle, making your nest among the stars, I will bring you down." 5 "If thieves came to you, they would only steal as much as they wanted? If someone stole your grape harvest, they would at least leave grapes for you to glean." 6 "O how Esau will be ransacked, and his hidden treasures searched for!" 7 "All your allies will force you to the border. They will deceive and overpower you. Those who eat your bread will set a trap for you while you are unsuspecting." 8 "On that day," declares the LORD, "I will destroy Edom's wise men?" 9 "Then your mighty men will be dismayed, O Teman. Everyone from the mountain of Esau will be slaughtered." 10 "You will be covered with shame because of your violence to your brother Jacob. You will be cut off forever."

11 "On the day that you stood by doing nothing while strangers carried off his wealth, and foreigners entered his gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were one of them." 12 "Do not gloat over your brother's demise. Do not rejoice over the destruction of the sons of Judah or boast of that day," 13 "or enter the gate of My people in the day of their disaster. Neither exalt over their calamity or loot their wealth." 14 "You should not wait at the crossroads to cut down their fugitives, or hand over those who have survived their day of trouble." 15 "For the day of the LORD draws near on all the nations. As you have done, so it will be done to you. Your dealings will come back on your own head." 16 "Just as you drank on My holy hill, so all the nations drink and drink, until they become as though they had never been." 17 "There will be some on Mount Zion who escape. It will be holy, and the house of Jacob will once again possess their possessions."

18 "At that time the house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame. But the house of Esau will be stubble, consumed by the fire, leaving no survivors," for the LORD has spoken. 19 "Then those of the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, and those of the Philistine plain will possess the territory of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will possess Gilead." 20 "The exiles of the children of Israel, who are among the Canaanites shall possess Phoenicia, and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev." 21 "Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion to govern the mountains of Esau. And the kingdom will be the LORD's."
