1 Corinthians - At A Glance

16 Chapters - Written about AD 55 by Paul

Theme: Paul wrote to the Corinthians to identify problems in the church, to offer solutions and to teach believers how to live for Christ in a corrupt society. Roman believers were rallying around certain people, such as Peter, Paul or Appollos. Instead their allegiance must be to Christ. Let Him lead you.

1-9_I could not speak you as full grown spiritual men. You were babes and I gave you milk to drink. Even now you have trouble with solid food. And it does not matter whether I Paul teach you or Apollos. One plants and another waters. We are God's fellow workers and you are God's field.

__10-15_According to the grace of God, as His builder, I laid the foundation. Another builds on it. Let each man be careful how he builds. Jesus Christ must be the foundation on which everything else is built. Each man's work will become evident and the quality of his work will be revealed.

__16-17_Do you realize that you are a temple of God? The Spirit of God dwells in you and you must not destroy that temple.

__18-23_Let no man deceive himself by thinking he is wise. The wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's eyes. And let no one boast of who it was that brought him to Christ. You belong to Christ and Christ belongs to God.

1-5_We should be regarded as trustworthy servants of Christ. Do not pass judgment on each other. When the LORD comes He will bring to light what has been done in darkness. Each man's praise should come to him from God alone.

__6-21_We are all teachers in Christ. We become a spectacle to the world.

1-8_Old leaven represents malice and wickedness. Having no leaven represents sincerity and truth.

__9-13_I wrote to you asking you not to associate with a so-called brother if he is immoral. I was not referring to those outside the church. God judges them. You are to remove the wicked from your midst.

1-11_If you have a case against someone in the church, if possible, take care of the matter yourselves. Don't you realize that we will judge angels? How much more so in this life. Keep matters of judgment within the church.

__12-20_The body is not for immorality, but for the LORD. God who raised up the LORD will also raise us up through His power. Your bodies are members of Christ and you shall not make them members of a harlot. When one joins himself to a harlot he is one body with her. Flee immorality. Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

1-7_I wish you could all be as I am and not be married. But it is not a sin to marry. Let each man and woman have their own spouse. And let each one remember that they should not deny the other except by agreement for a time, so that they may devote themselves to prayer.

__8-16_If you are unmarried or widowed, it would be good for you to remain that way. But if you must marry, then do so. If your spouse is an unbeliever, stay with them if they are willing. You might be instrumental in their salvation.

__17-24_Circumcision is not a bad thing, but it is not necessary. Let each man remain with God in the condition in which he was called.

__25-40_Concerning virgins, I have no command of the LORD, but I'll give my opinion. Those who are married should remain married. And a virgin would do well to remain single, since marriage is difficult. Marriage can be the cause of divided interests. If a woman become a widow, if possible she should remain a widow.

1-13_When buying food in the market, if it has been offer to or blessed by idols, but is good food, then eat it. However, as a matter of conscience, not everyone can do this. If it is seen as a sin by some, they should not eat it. And if food causes my brother to stumble, then I will not eat it.

1-18_Those who are called to preach should be cared for by the church. Even the law of Moses says the you shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing. So the LORD has directed that those who proclaim the gospel shall get their living from the gospel.

__19-23_Though I am a free man, I have become a slave to all, that I might win some. To those under the law I am under the law. And to those outside of the law, I operate under the law of Christ. To the weak I am weak. I do all things for the sake of the gospel that I might become a fellow partaker of it.

1-13_Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man. God is faithful and will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able to bear, for with every temptation He provides a way of escape.

__14-22_In worship do not mix truth with error. Flee from idolatry. Do not mix the worship of demons with the worship of God.

__23-33_Give thanks for all things while remembering to consider the weaker man.

1-16_I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man and that man is the head of a woman. God is the head of Christ. It is a disgrace for a man to cover his head while he prays. A woman should cover her head when she prays. A man is the image and glory of God, but a woman is the glory of man.

__17-34_There must be no factions among you. When you eat together, you are not glorifying God. Some of you eat for the sake of eating, even becoming drunk. So my brothers, when you come together to eat and drink, wait for one another. If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home first and then come together for communion.

1-11_There are a variety of spiritual gifts that are given by the same Spirit, such as wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, distinguishing of spirits, tongues and the interpretation of tongues. One and the same Spirit distributes these individually just as He wills.

__12-31_Just as there is one body with many members, so all the members of the church are the body of Christ. And the body cares for each of its members. The body needs each member. We cannot all be one member. Neither can we all have the same gift of the Spirit.

1-3_If I speak with the tongues of men and angels, but do not have love, I only make a noise. If I have the gift of prophecy and all knowledge, and if I have faith that moves mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give everything away and sacrifice my body but do not have love, my life is meaningless.

__4-8_Love is patient and kind, and is not jealous. Love does not brag and is not arrogant. Love does not act unbecomingly, or seek its own. It is not provoked and does not keep count of wrongs. Love rejoices with truth, bears all, believes all and endures all. Gifts may fail or be done away with, but love never fails.

__9-13_When I was a child I spoke and reasoned as a child. When I became a man I put away childish things. Now we see things dimly as in a poor mirror, but eventually we will see face to face. Now I know in part. Then I shall know fully. Faith, hope and love abide, but love is the greatest of the three.

1-11_I want you to believe the gospel I have preached to you. Christ died for our sins, was buried and then raised on the third day as the scriptures predicted. He appeared to the apostles and to five hundred others. Last of all, as to one born too late, He appeared to me.

__12-25_Christ is the first fruits of those raised from the dead. And those who belong to Him will be raised at His coming. Then He will give the kingdom to His Father Who will abolish all rule and authority on this earth. For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.

__26-49_The last enemy to be abolished is death. Some ask, how are the dead raised? What kind of body will they have? Though a body was buried perishable, it will be raise imperishable. It will be a spiritual body.

__50-58_I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed. It will happen in a moment when the trumpet sounds. When this happens the saying will come true that says, death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your sting? Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
