1-7_The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: to help people receive instruction in wisdom, justice, judgment and equity, to give prudence to the naive, help the young and increase everyone's understanding.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge but fools despise instruction.

__8-19_Listen, my son, to your father and mother. Sinners may entice you but do not listen to them. They may suggest violence as a diversion and a quick path to wealth. Do not walk with them. They lie in wait for their own blood and ambush their own lives. Violence is never the path to security or satisfaction.

__20-33_Wisdom clearly asks the foolish why they enjoy scoffing and hate truth. Neglecting sound counsel and rejecting reproof, they are left to the outcome of their choices. Calamity will come like a whirlwind as they seek help but cannot find it. They did not choose to fear the LORD. They shall eat the fruit of their lifestyle.

1-12_My son, if you listen to what I say, treasure my commandments and search for understanding as for hidden treasure, then you will discern the fear of the LORD. He is the One who gives wisdom. He is a shield to those who walk in integrity. Wisdom will enter your heart. Understanding will watch over you and deliver you from evil.

__13-22_You will be saved from those who leave the paths of righteousness. You will be delivered from the woman whose designs upon you are not for your good, whose compliments are pure flattery, who has forgotten her covenant with God. Walk in the paths of good men following righteousness. The wicked will be cut off from the land.

1-6_My son, do not forget my teaching. Keeping my commandments will result in a long peaceful life. Let kindness and truth be your rule. This will give you favor with God and man. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not depend on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.

__7-12_Do not be wise in your own eyes. Fear the LORD and turn away from evil. This will be healing to your body and refresh your innermost being. Honor the LORD with your substance and remember Him first with your increase. He will give you more than you need if you do not reject His discipline. He reproves you because He loves you.

__13-18_How blessed is the man who finds wisdom and gains understanding. He discovers these to be of more profit than silver, gold or jewels. Nothing compares with wisdom and understanding. They bring long life. Riches and honor will follow. Wisdom and understanding are a tree of life to those who hold fast to them.

__19-26_The LORD founded the earth by wisdom. With His understanding He established the heavens. His knowledge causes the much needed moisture for the land. While you seek the LORD's ways you walk securely. You lie down without fear and your sleep is sweet. Your confidence in the LORD makes all of this possible.

__27-35_When it is within your power, do not withhold good from whom it is due. Never postpone giving what you have promised. Never plan harm for a neighbor or contend with a man without cause.
Do not envy a man of violence. His ways are an abomination to the LORD.
The wise will inherit honor but fools display dishonor.

1-9_If sons want understanding they should listen to their father. My father taught me to keep the commandments. Acquire wisdom, he said. Acquire understanding. Prize her and she will exalt you. She will honor you if you hold her close.

__10-19_My son, if you listen to me you will have many years of life. I have directed you in the ways of wisdom. Take hold of instruction and guard her, for she is your life. Do not follow the wicked. Turn away from the path they follow. The path of the righteous is like the light of the noon sun. But the way of the wicked is darkness.

__20-27_My son, give attention to my words and keep them in your heart. They are life and health to the whole body. Watch over your heart with diligence. Never practice deceit. Look straight ahead watching the path of your feet and all your ways will be established. Turn you foot away from evil.

1-14_My son, listen carefully to what I am about to tell you. An adulterous has smooth enticing words but in the end she is as bitter as Wormwood and as sharp as a two edged sword. Her footsteps lead to death. She does not even understand her own folly. Stay away from her. Do not go near her door lest your flesh and your body be consumed.

__15-23_Drink from your own cistern. Should you drink from any spring besides your own? Let your fountain be blessed. Rejoice in the wife of your youth. She is lovely. Be satisfied with her and exhilarated with her love. Stay away from the adulteress. The ways of a man are before the eyes of the LORD. A man is killed by his iniquities.

1-5_My son, if you have cosigned for your neighbor, given a pledge to a stranger, or have been caught by your own rash words, do whatever you can to get out of your obligation.

__6-11_A lazy man might learn from the ant which prepares her food in the summer without an overseer. With a little sleep, a folding of the hands in rest, poverty can make your situation desperate.

__12-15_It is a wicked and worthless person who does not speak the truth. When a person devises secret signals to accomplish the perversity of his heart he will discover that his own calamity will come suddenly and he will be without recourse.

__16-19_Seven things are an abomination to the LORD:
Haughty eyes,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that run to evil,
A false witness,
And a person that spreads strife among brothers.

__20-35_Keep the teaching of your father and mother close to your heart and be careful to follow their council. Walk in light while you do this. Reproofs for discipline are the way of life and will keep you away from evil women who will surely destroy you if you let them have their way with you. Committing adultery shows no sense.

1-5_My son, if you value my commandments and keep them as the apple of your eye, letting them control your actions and the intent of your heart, you will avoid much danger that is everywhere waiting to entrap you.

__6-23_From my window I watched a young man making very wrong choices. A woman came to meet him. She was dressed as a harlot and obviously very practiced at her trade. She took a hold of him and kissed him. Then she began telling him of all she had planned for the two of them. She used many persuasions and he followed her to her home.

__24-27_My son, do not let your heart be turned aside by her ways. Do not walk in her path. She has many victims. Her house is on the path to hell.

1-11_Wisdom calls and understanding is given to those who listen. Value their instruction more than silver or gold. Wisdom is better than jewels. There is nothing in this world to compare with her.

__12-21_The fear of the LORD is to hate evil. Power comes with understanding and sound wisdom. No one can judge rightly without these. All who diligently seek me will find me. Enduring wealth and righteousness are my fruit. These prove to be better than the best silver or gold.

__22-31_The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way. I existed from the earliest of times on earth. Before anything was created, either the springs, the mountains, the earth or the field, when He established the heaven, inscribed a circle on the face of the deep, when He set the boundaries of the sea, I was beside Him.

__32-36_Listen to me, for those who do this are blessed by keeping my ways. He who finds me finds life and obtains the LORD's favor. Those who hate me love death.

1-6_Wisdom has built her house with seven pillars. She has set her table with food and drink. She has sent her maidens to call in guests. She calls for the naive to come and eat her food and drink. They are to forsake folly and live. They are to proceed in the way of understanding.

__7-12_The one who corrects a scoffer or a wicked man gets dishonor and is insulted for his trouble. Wise men, on the other hand, appreciate instruction. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. And knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. God is the one who adds to the length of life. Choices matter.

__13-18_A woman of folly is boisterous. She sits in her doorway calling to those who pass by her house. Those who want to walk a straight path should have nothing to do with her. She suggests that she has something he will enjoy. He does not know that the dead dwell there. Her guests find themselves in the depths of hell.

1-10_A wise son makes his father glad. A foolish son is a grief to his mother. Ill gotten gain is not profitable but the LORD will not allow the righteous to go hungry. The industrious works diligently but the lazy are shameless. The memory of the righteous is blessed and the name of the wicked will rot.

__11-19_The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life. The mouth of the wicked conceals violence. Love covers all transgressions but hatred stirs up strife. The rich man's wealth is his fortress. The poor are ruined by their poverty. Many words seem to always bring transgression. One who restrains his lips is wise.

__20-25_It is the blessing of the LORD that makes one rich without sorrow. Doing wickedly is like sport to a fool. What the wicked fears will come upon him and the desire of the righteous will be granted. When the whirlwind has passed the wicked are no more but the righteous have an everlasting foundation.

__26-32_The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked are shortened. The way of the LORD is a stronghold to the upright, but ruin to those who work iniquity. The lips of the righteous bring forth what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked bring that which is perverted.

1-9_A false balance is an abomination to the LORD. But a just weight is His delight. Dishonor comes with pride and wisdom comes to the humble. Riches do not profit in the day of wrath. A man's greed is his undoing. The righteous are delivered from trouble. With just his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor.

__10-17_When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices. And when the wicked perish it is a reason for glad shouting. He who is surety for a stranger will surely suffer for it. A gracious woman attains honor. A violent man attains riches. The merciful man does himself good but the cruel does himself harm.

__18-25_The one who is steadfastly righteous will attain life and he who pursues evil will cause his own death. A ring of gold in a pig's snout is like a beautiful woman who lacks discretion. There is one who scatters, yet see an increase. And another withholds what is due and then has want. The generous will prosper.

__26-31_He who trusts in his riches will fall but the righteous will flourish. The foolish will be servant to the wise. He who is wise wins souls. If the righteous will be rewarded in the earth, how much more the sinner!

1-10_When a person loves discipline he loves knowledge. A man cannot be established by wicked choices. An excellent wife is the crown of her husband. A wife who shames her husband is rottenness to his bones. The wicked will be overthrown and the righteous will stand. A righteous man has regard for the life of his beast.

__11-24_If a person tills his land he will have enough bread. The one who pursues vain things lacks sense. The way of a fool is right in his own eyes but a wise man listens to counsel. Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who deal faithfully are His delight. The hand of the diligent will rule. The lazy do forced labor.

__25-28_A man's anxiety weighs him down. A good word can lift that weight. A slothful man does not roast his prey. It is a precious thing to be diligent. The result of righteous living is more life and its path does not lead to death.

1-9_A wise man accepts his father's discipline. The one who guards his mouth preserves his life. A righteous man hates falsehood. There is one who pretends to be rich, but has nothing. Another pretends to be poor, but has great wealth. The light of righteousness rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked goes out.

__10-21_Presumption brings nothing but contention. Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles. Hope deferred makes the heart sick. Desire fulfilled is a tree of life. The one who despises God's Word will suffer great loss. The one who respects His commandments will be rewarded. Adversity pursues sinners, but the righteous will prosper.

__22-25_A good man leaves an inheritance to his grand children. A sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous. Abundant food is in the fallow ground of the poor, but is swept away by injustice. He who spares the rod hates his son. The righteous have enough to satisfy their appetite, but the wicked are always hungry.

1-10_The wise woman builds her house but the foolish one tears it down with her own hands. Where no oxen are, the manger is clean. Much increase comes by the strength of the ox. Do not remain with a fool or it will get so that you cannot discern knowledge. The heart knows its own bitterness, and a stranger cannot comprehend its joy.

__11-20_There is a way that seems right to a man, but that which seems so right ends in death. Even in laughter, the heart may be in pain and the end of joy may be grief. The backslider will eventually have his fill of his own ways. The naive believe everything but the prudent consider it carefully.

__21-35_Labor yields profit. A truthful witness saves lives. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life helping a person to avoid the snares of death. He who is slow to anger has great understanding. A tranquil heart is life to the body. Passion is rottenness to the bones. Righteousness exalts a nation. Sin is a disgrace to any people.

1-10_A gentle answer turns away wrath. The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable. The eyes of the LORD are in every place, watching the good and the evil. A soothing tongue is a tree of life. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is His delight.

__11-33_The hearts of men are open to the LORD's eyes. Better is a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and turmoil. Better a dish of vegetables where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it. The path of life leads upward for the wise. The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer.

1-8_All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but the LORD weighs the motives. Commit your ways to the LORD, and your plans will be established. By loving kindness and truth iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the LORD one keeps away from evil. Better a little with righteousness than great income with injustice.

__9-24_A just balance and fair set of scales are what the LORD expects. All the weights of the bag are His concern. How much better to get wisdom than gold! He who gives attention to the word shall find good. Blessed is he who trusts in the LORD. Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

__25-33_There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is death. A worker's appetite works for him, for his hunger urges him on. A gray head is a crown of glory. He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city.

1-9_Better is a dry morsel and quietness with it than a house full of feasting with strife. The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart. Grandchildren are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their fathers.

__10-28_A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred blows on a fool. A friend loves at all times. A brother is born for adversity. A man who lacks sense becomes surety for his neighbor. A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones. Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise.

1-16_He who keeps to himself seeks his own desires and quarrels against wisdom. A fool is not interested in understanding, only revealing his own mind. The name of the LORD is a strong tower and the righteous run into it and are safe. A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.

__17-24_When a case is first presented, it seems just, until another cross examines. A brother offended is hard to win back. Death and life are in the power of the tongue. He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor with the LORD. A man of many friends comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

1-13_It is better to walk in integrity than to be perverse in speech and a fool. It is not good for a person to be without knowledge. He who gets wisdom loves his own soul. He who has understanding will find the good. A man's discretion makes him slow to anger and it is his glory to overlook transgression.

__14-22_House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the LORD. He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, but he who is careless in his ways will die. He who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD and He will repay him for his good deed. Kindness is what is desirable in a man.

__23-29_The fear of the LORD leads to life, so that one may safely sleep untouched by evil. Cease listening to instruction my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. Judgments are prepared for those who scoff and blows are in store for the backs of fools.

1-12_Wine mocks those who imbibe and the unwise are destroyed by strong drink. Many a man proclaims his own loyalty, but where can you find a trustworthy person? Who can say, I have cleansed my heart, I am pure from my sin? It is by his deeds that a lad distinguishes himself if his conduct is pure and right.

__13-22_Do not love sleep lest you become poor. Bad, bad, says the buyer, but when he walks away he boasts. Lips of knowledge are more precious than gold and many jewels. Bread obtained by falsehood seems sweet until later when it feels like gravel in the mouth. Do not say, I will repay evil. Wait for the LORD and He will save you.

__23-30_A man's steps are ordained by the LORD. How can he understand his way? The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching the inner most parts of his being. The glory of young men is their strength, and the honor of old men is their gray hair. Stripes that wound scour away evil down to the inner most parts.

1-14_Do righteousness, for justice is more desired by the LORD than sacrifice. Treasure gotten by lying will not last. It is better to live in a corner of a roof than in a house with a contentious woman. He who shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will also cry himself with no one to answer.

__15-31_The execution of justice is a joy for the righteous and a terror to the workers of iniquity. He who loves pleasure will become a poor man. It is better to live in a desert land than with a contentious and vexing woman. He who guards his mouth and his tongue guards his soul from troubles. All victories belong to the LORD.

1-14_A good name is to be more desired than great riches. The rich and the poor have this in common; The LORD made them both. The reward of humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, honor and life. Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. The borrower becomes slave to the lender.

__15-29_Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child. The rod of discipline will remove it from him. Do not associate with a man given to anger lest you learn his ways. Do not cosign for another's debt. Why should you lose what you have? Do not move the ancient boundaries. A man skilled in his work will stand before kings.

1-12_When you eat with a ruler consider carefully what is set before you. Put a knife to your throat if you are a man of great appetite. Do not weary yourself longing for wealth. Riches can sprout wings and fly away. As a man thinks, so is he. Apply your heart to discipline and your ears to the words of knowledge.

__13-25_Do not hold back discipline from a child. He will not die from the rod. You will deliver him from hell. Do not envy sinners. Rather, live in the fear of the LORD. Listen to your father and mother. Buy truth and do not let go of it. Get wisdom, instruction and understanding. Let your parents be happy that you are their child.

__26-35_My son, have nothing to do with a harlot. Who has woe, sorrow, contentions and complaining, wounds without cause and red eyes? Those who linger long over wine. It goes down smoothly but then bites like a serpent. Your eyes will see strange things. And when you wake up, you will want another drink.

1-12_Do not envy evil men. They are associated with violence and trouble. By wisdom a house is built, understanding establishes it and by knowledge the rooms are filled with precious and pleasant riches. If you claim you didn't know any better, He who weighs hearts takes that into consideration.

__13-27_My son, eat honey, for it is good and pleasant to your taste. So is wisdom to your soul. If you find it, you will have a future. Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, lest you displease the LORD. Do not fret because of evil doers, or envy the wicked. They have no future. Do your field work first. Then build your house.

__28-34_Do not witness against your neighbor without cause. Do not intend to pay him back for something he has done to you. The LORD will take care of him. I passed by the unkempt vineyard of a lazy man and noted that a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, then poverty comes as a robber and want like an armed man.

1-14_It is the glory of the LORD to conceal a matter and the glory of kings to search out the matter. It is better to be invited to come higher than to be told to go lower. Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken at the right time. A person who boasts of his gifts is like clouds and wind without rain.

__15-22_If you find honey eat only what you need, lest you vomit. Let your foot be rarely in your neighbor's house lest he weary of you. Singing songs to a troubled heart is like vinegar on soda. If your enemy is hungry, give him food. If he is thirsty, give him a drink. This is like heaping coals on his head. The LORD will reward you.

__23-28_It is better to live in the corner of a roof than to share a house with a contentious woman. Like a trampled spring and a polluted well is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked. Like a city that is broken into and without walls is a man who has no self control.

__18-28_It is very wrong to deceive one's neighbor and say, Oh, I was only joking. Just as a lack of fuel causes a fire to go out, so contention quiets down when the whispering stops. He who digs a pit will fall in it himself.

__9-27_Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away. Iron sharpens iron just as one man sharpens another. Know well the condition of your flocks and pay attention to your herds. Riches do not last forever and are never a sure thing.

__13-23_He who conceals his transgression will not prosper. But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion. He who tills his land will have plenty of food. He who follows empty pursuits will have poverty a plenty. To show partiality is not good. To rebuke someone is better than to flatter him.

1-14_A man who stiffens his neck after strong reproof will suddenly be broken beyond remedy. A man who flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for his feet. Scorners set a city on fire but wise men turn away anger. A fool always loses his temper but a wise man holds it back.

__15-21_The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother. Correct your son and he will give you comfort. Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him. He who pampers his slave from childhood will in the end find him to be a son.

1-4_The words of Agur the son of Jakeh: I feel so ignorant because I do not have knowledge of the Holy One, who has gathered the wind in His fists. He has wrapped the waters in His garment and established the ends of the earth. What is His name, or His Son's name? Surely you know!

__5-10_Every word of God is tested. Do not add to His words, lest He reprove you and you be shown for what you are. I ask for two things: Keep deception and lies far from me, and give me neither riches or poverty. Feed me with the food that is my portion lest I be full and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD?

__11-17_There is a type of man who curses his parents and yet is pure in his own eyes. He is arrogant in his treatment of the needy and afflicted.

The leech has two daughters, Give and Give.

There are four things that say never enough: Sheol, the barren womb, the earth that soaks up the water and the fire that keeps burning.

__18-20_There are four things that are wonderful and hard to understand: the eagle soaring in the sky, how a serpent moves over the rock, how a ship navigates on the open sea, and the way of a man with a maid.

__21-23_Three things make the earth tremble, but the fourth is even greater: a slave who becomes king, a fool who has gratified his appetite, an unloved woman when she gets a husband, and a maid servant when she replaces her mistress.

__24-28_Four things are small but very wise: the ant who prepare its food in the summer, the badger who make its home in the rocks, the locust go in ranks without a leader, and the lizard that you can hold in your hand it is in king's palaces.

__29-33_Four things are stately in their walk: the lion, mighty among beasts, the strutting cock, the male goat, and a king when his army is with him.

Have you been a fool by exalting yourself? Have you plotted evil? As surely as churning milk produces butter, churning anger produces strife.

1-9_The words of Lemuel, which his mother taught him. O my son, do not give your strength to women. It is not for the king to drink wine, or for rulers to drink strong drink, lest they forget their duty and pervert the rights of the afflicted. Give strong drink to him who is perishing. Judge righteously. Defend the needy.

__10-16_Who can find an excellent wife. She is worth more than jewels. Her husband trusts her in everything and she has his best interest at heart. She knows how to work with wool and flax and knows where to find what her household needs. She rises early to accomplish this. She even invests in a field and plants a vineyard.

__17-24_She is a woman of strength. She is not afraid of work. She understands how to make cloth, She extends her hand to the poor. She is not afraid of the cold for her family is well dressed, and so is she. Her husband sits among the elders. She knows where to sell the garments she has made.

__25-29_Strength and dignity are her clothing and she smiles at the future. When she speaks it is with wisdom. Kindness is part of her speech. She looks after her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children called her blessed and her husband praises her, saying, you are best mother and wife.

__30-31_Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD shall be praised. Let her have the product of her own hands. Her works will be praised by all who know her.
