Psalm - At A Glance

Theme: Psalms is a collection of poety for the expression of praise, worship and confession to God. The collection actually spans from the time of Moses to the deportation. David wrote the most but many others contributed. The book may be thought of as a hymnbook of praise and worship. There is a Psalm for our every experience.

1-3_How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or place himself under the influence of sinners. Instead he delights in the law of the LORD meditating on it day and night. He will flourish like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in season. In whatever he does he prospers.

__4-6_The wicked are like chaff in the wind and will not stand in the judgment. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous but the wicked will perish.

1-9_Why are the nations in an uproar against the LORD and His Anointed? He who sits in the heavens laughs at what they are trying to do. But as for me, I have installed My King on My holy mountain. The LORD said, Thou art My Son. Today I have begotten Thee. I shall give the nations to You as an inheritance.

__10-12_Therefore, O kings and judges, take warning. Worship the LORD with reverence. Do homage to the Son lest He become angry and you perish. For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him.

__11-12_Let those who take refuge in You sing for joy. Shelter those who love Your name. It is You who blesses the righteous. You surround him with favor as a shield.

1-10_I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart. I will tell of all Your wonders and sing praises to Your name. You have maintained my just cause. You judge righteously. __11-20_Sing praises to the LORD who dwells in Zion. The needy will not always be forgotten. Arise, O Lord, and let the nations know that they are but men.

__11-21_Be not far from me for trouble is near with none to help. A band of evil doers surround me. They pierced my hands and feet. I can count all my bones. They divide my garments among themselves. And for my clothing they cast lots. O Lord, be not far off.

__22-31_I will tell of Your name to my brothers. From You comes my praise in the great assembly. The kingdom is the LORD's. He rules over the nations.

__4-6_Your rod and staff comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

1-4_Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your loving kindness. According to Your great compassion blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For my transgressions and my sin is always before me. I have sinned against You only and You are blameless when You judge.

__5-9_I was brought forth in iniquity. In sin my mother conceived me. You want truth in my hidden parts. Purify me with hyssop and I shall be clean. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness, and blot out my iniquities.

__10-14_Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit. Deliver me from the guilt of the blood I have shed, that my tongue may sing with joy.

__15-19_O Lord, open my mouth that I may declare Your praise. The sacrifice the LORD wants even more than burnt offerings is a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

He forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them. Over and over He restrained His anger because He understood that they were but flesh.

__40-51_They rebelled against God so often. Again and again they tempted God and did not remember His power, how He had sent the plagues when the rivers of Egypt were turned to blood, sent swarms of flies, frogs, grasshoppers and locust. Finally He sent the hail and the lightening. Then He smote the firstborn in Egypt.

__52-61_He led them out of Egypt like sheep. The sea engulfed their enemies. He brought them to His holy land drove out the nations before them. After all of this they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God. They provoked Him with their high places and aroused His jealousy with their graven images.

__62-72_He delivered His people to the sword. He let them experience much sadness. He rejected the tent of Joseph and chose the tribe of Judah. He chose David His servant and took him from caring for sheep in order to shepherd His people.

__13-23_When they forgot His works He sent a wasting disease. When they envied Moses and Aaron, the earth swallowed Dathan and Abiram and a fire consumed the wicked ones who supported them. They made a calf at Horeb and worshiped it. They forgot God and He said He would destroy them, but Moses turned away God's wrath from them.

__24-33_They despised the pleasant land God was giving them so He made their generation die in the wilderness. They joined themselves to Baal-Peor and ate sacrifices offered to the dead. They provoked Him to anger and He sent a plague. Their rebellion at the waters of Meribah caused Moses to sin and lose out on going into Canaan.

__34-43_They did not destroy the people of the land they entered, as they had been commanded. They intermarried with them and learned their practices. This became a snare to them so that they sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons. God let their enemies subdue them. No matter how many times He delivered them, they rebelled.

__44-48_Nevertheless, He saw their distress and remembered His covenant. They were objects of His compassion. Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Let all the people say, Amen. Praise the LORD.
