Samuel - NKJ

Samuel Came along When the Time of the Judges was Nearly over and the Kings Were Beginning. He was a Miracle Child, a Gift from God to a Mother Who Badly Wanted a Child, but Had Not Been Able Thus Far. After His Mother Weaned Him and Brought Him to Eli, the High Priest Who Did a Better Job Raising Him than He Had Done with His Own Sons. Samuel's Mother Said, I Have Lent Him to the Lord as Long as He Lives.

1. Hannah Loved the Lord and She Loved Her Husband. But This was Not Enough for Her. She Wanted a Child.

1 Samuel 1:1-2 Now there was a certain man of ________________ Zophim, of the ________________ of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of ____________, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an __________________. [2] And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

1 Samuel 1:3-5 This man went up from his city yearly to worship and ________________ to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there. [4] And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an ______________, he would give portions to ______________ his wife and to all her sons and ________________. [5] But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, ______________ the LORD had closed her womb.

1 Samuel 1:6-7 And her rival also provoked her ______________, to make her ________________, because the LORD had closed her womb. [7] So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, that she provoked her; ________________ she wept and did not eat.

1 Samuel 1:8 Then Elkanah her ____________ said to her, Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart ____________? Am I not better to you than ten sons?

2. God Answers Hannah's Prayer.

1 Samuel 1:9-12 So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and ______________ in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the ______________ of the tabernacle[c] of the LORD. [10] And she was in __________________ of soul, and prayed to the LORD and wept in anguish. [11] Then she made a vow and said, O LORD of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and ______________ me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head. [12] And it ______________, as she ________________ praying before the LORD, that Eli watched her mouth.

1 Samuel 1:13-15 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli ____________ she was drunk. [14] So Eli said to her, How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you! [15] But Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of ________________ spirit. I have drunk ____________ wine nor _____________________ drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

1 Samuel 1:17-18 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your ______________ which you have asked of Him. [18] And she said, Let your ___________________ find favor in your sight. So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no __________ sad.

1 Samuel 1:19-20 Then they rose early in the morning and ________________ before the LORD, and ______________ and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD __________________ her. 3. Hannah Took Samuel to Stay with Eli the High Priest. As She Had Said She Would, She Gave Him to Serve the Lord.

1 Samuel 1:21-22 Now the man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the LORD the yearly ________________ and his vow. [22] But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her ____________, Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the LORD and remain there ____________.

1 Samuel 1:24-28 Now when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD in __________. And the child was young. [25] Then they ___________________ a bull, and brought the child to Eli. [26] And she said, O my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, ____________ to the LORD. [27] For this child I __________, and the LORD has ____________ me my ______________ which I asked of Him. [28] Therefore I also have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the LORD. So they ________________ the LORD there

1 Samuel 2:11 Then ____________ went to his house at Ramah. But the child __________________ to the LORD before Eli the priest.

1) Hannah said she would not go with her husband to the yearly sacrifice until what happened? __________________________ (verse 22)

4. Samuel Lived with Eli and Learned from Him.

1 Samuel 3:1-4 Now the boy Samuel __________________ to the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no __________________ __________________. [2] And it came to pass at that time, while Eli was lying down in his place, and when his eyes had begun to grow so dim that he could not see, [3] and before the lamp of God went out in the __________________ of the LORD where the ark of God was, and while Samuel was lying down, [4] that the LORD __________ Samuel. And he ______________, Here I am!

1 Samuel 3:5-6 So he ran to Eli and said, Here I am, for you called me. And he said, I did not call; lie down again. And he went and lay down. [6] Then the _______ called yet again, Samuel! So Samuel _________ and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. He ______________, I did not call, my _____; lie down again.

1 Samuel 3:7-9 (Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, nor was the word of the LORD yet ______________ to him. ) [8] And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. So he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you did call me. Then Eli ________________ that the LORD had called the boy. [9] ________________ Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you, that you must say, Speak, LORD, for Your ____________ hears. So Samuel went and lay down in his _________.

1 Samuel 3:10-14 Now the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel answered, Speak, for Your servant hears. [11] Then the LORD said to Samuel: Behold, I will do ________________ in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. [12] In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken __________________ his house, from ________________ to end. [13] For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not ______________ them. [14] And ________________ I have sworn to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Elis house shall not be atoned for by ________________ or ______________ forever.

1) When Eli had lain down for the night and Samuel had too, he heard a voice. Whose voice was it? ________

2) When Eli realized that God was talking to Samuel, he told Samuel to answer the Lord by saying: Speak Lord, for your ____________ hears You.

3) God said that He was putting a curse on Eli and his sons because they had sinned and Eli had not _____________ them.

5. Samuel Had to Tell Eli the Message the Lord Had Given Him.

1 Samuel 3:15 So Samuel lay down until ____________, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel was afraid to tell Eli the __________.

1 Samuel 3:16-18 Then Eli called Samuel and said, Samuel, my son! He answered, Here I am. [17] And he said, What is the word that the LORD spoke to you? __________ do not hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide ______________ from me of all the __________ that He said to you. [18] Then Samuel told him __________________, and hid ____________ from him. And he said, It is the LORD. Let Him do what seems good to Him.

1 Samuel 3:19-20 So Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. [20] And all Israel from Dan to ________________ knew that Samuel had been ___________________ as a prophet of the LORD.

1) Samuel afraid to tell Eli what the Lord had told him? __________

Samuel was a judge and a prophet. Judges had ruled Israel for about four hundred years since the time of Moses. When the people asked for a king, Samuel felt rejected. God said to him, the people have not rejected you, but Me. As the time of the judges was closing, kings replaced judges as rulers of Israel. Samuel anointed the first two kings, Saul and David.
