19-First Day Texts - RSV

1. The Sabbath Is a Sign Between God and His People.
Exodus 31:17-18 It is a sign for ever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was _refreshed_.'" [18] And he gave to Moses, when he had made an end of _speaking_ with him upon Mount Sinai, the two tables of the _testimony_, tables of stone, _written_ with the finger of God.

2. The Sabbath Is a Symbol of Salvation.
Ezekiel 20:12 Moreover I gave them my _sabbaths_, as a sign between me and them, that they might know that I the LORD _sanctify_ them.

Hebrews 4:4-6 For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way, "And God rested on the seventh day from all his works." [5] And again in this place he said, "They shall never enter my rest." [6] Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who _formerly_ _received_ the good news failed to enter _because_ of _disobedience_,

Hebrews 4:9 So then, there _remains_ a _sabbath_ rest for the people of God;

3. Jesus' Closest Followers Would Not Embalm His Body on the Sabbath.
Luke 23:56 Then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the sabbath they rested _according_ to the _commandment_.

4. His Disciples Visit the Tomb on the 1st Day to Embalm His Body.
Luke 24:1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the _spices_ which they had _prepared_.

5. The Women Come to the Tomb on the 1st Day.
Matthew 28:1 Now after the sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Mag'dalene and the other Mary went to see the _sepulchre_.

Mark 16:2 And very early on the _first_ day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had _risen_.

6. Jesus Was Risen on the 1st Day.
Mark 16:9 Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he _appeared_ first to Mary _Magdalene_, from whom he had cast out seven demons.

7. Mary Visited the Tomb Before She Knew That Jesus Had Risen.
John 20:1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Mag'dalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been _taken_ away from the tomb.

8. The Symbol of the Resurrection Is Baptism, Not Sunday Worship.
Romans 6:3-5 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? [4] We were buried therefore with him by _baptism_ into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the _Father_, we too might walk in _newness_ of life. [5] For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall _certainly_ be united with him in a _resurrection_ like his.

9. Paul Preached Saturday Night and Then Traveled on Sunday. Sunday Begins at Sundown Saturday Evening.
Acts 20:7 On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, _intending_ to depart on the morrow; and he _prolonged_ his speech until midnight.

10. The Disciples Assemble on the 1st Day of the Week Out of Fear-Not Worship.
John 20:19 On the _evening_ of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the _disciples_ were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."

11. The 1st Day of the Week Is a Good Time to Lay Aside An Offering for the Lord's Work.
1 Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may _prosper_, so that _contributions_ need not be made when I come.

12. God Blessed the Seventh-Day Sabbath at Creation.
Genesis 2:1-3 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. [2] And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. [3] So God _blessed_ the seventh day and _hallowed_ it, _because_ on it God rested from all his work which he had done in _creation_.

13. Our Love for God Leads Us to Fulfill, Or Keep the Law.
Romans 13:10 Love does no wrong to a _neighbor_; therefore love is the _fulfilling_ of the law.

14. Jesus Did Not Come to Destroy But to Fulfill the Law.
Matthew 5:17 "Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the _prophets_; I have come not to abolish them but to _fulfil_ them.

15. When We Come to God Through His Spirit, He Enables Us to Keep His Law.
Romans 8:4 In order that the just _requirement_ of the law might be _fulfilled_ in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
