4-Prophecies Of The Messiah - RSV

1. His Birthplace.
Micah 5:2 But you, O Bethlehem Eph'rathah, who are little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from _ancient_ days.

Luke 2:1-7 In those days a decree went out from Caesar _Augustus_ that all the world should be enrolled. [2] This was the first _enrollment_, when Quirin'i-us was _governor_ of Syria. [3] And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. [4] And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of _Nazareth_, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called _Bethlehem_, because he was of the house and lineage of David, [5] to be enrolled with Mary, his _betrothed_, who was with child. [6] And while they were there, the time came for her to be _delivered_. [7] And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in _swaddling_ cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Note: The New Testament scripture reference has been associated with an Old Testament reference showing the fulfillment of each Messianic prophecy.

2. Virgin Birth.
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord _himself_ will give you a sign. Behold, a young woman shall _conceive_ and bear a son, and shall call his name Imman'u-el.

Matthew 1:23 "Behold, a virgin shall _conceive_ and bear a son, and his name shall be called _Emmanuel_" (which means, God with us).

3. Jesus Lineage Through Judah.
Genesis 49:8-10 Judah, your _brothers_ shall praise you; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your _father's_ sons shall bow down before you. [9] Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as a lioness; who dares rouse him up? [10] The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it _belongs_; and to him shall be the _obedience_ of the _peoples_.

Luke 1:30-32 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. [31] And behold, you will _conceive_ in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. [32] He will be great, and will be _called_ the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the _throne_ of his _father_ David,

Numbers 24:17 I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not nigh: a star shall come forth out of Jacob, and a _scepter_ shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the _forehead_ of Moab, and break down all the sons of Sheth.

Matthew 2:1-2 Now when Jesus was born in _Bethlehem_ of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to _Jerusalem_, saying, [2] "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to _worship_ him."

4. The Messiah's Ministry.
Isaiah 61:1-3 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the _brokenhearted_, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; [2] to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of _vengeance_ of our God; to comfort all who mourn; [3] to grant to those who mourn in Zion--to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of _gladness_ instead of _mourning_, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of _righteousness_, the _planting_ of the LORD, that he may be _glorified_.

Luke 4:16-21 And he came to _Nazareth_, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the sabbath day. And he stood up to read; [17] and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written, [18] "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the _captives_ and _recovering_ of sight to the blind, to set at _liberty_ those who are _oppressed_, [19] to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." [20] And he closed the book, and gave it back to the _attendant_, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. [21] And he began to say to them, "Today this _scripture_ has been _fulfilled_ in your _hearing_."

5. Betrayed by a Friend.
Psalms 55:12-13 It is not an enemy who taunts me--then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me--then I could hide from him. [13] But it is you, my equal, my _companion_, my _familiar_ friend.

Matthew 26:47-50 While he was still _speaking_, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief _priests_ and the elders of the people. [48] Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "The one I shall kiss is the man; seize him." [49] And he came up to Jesus at once and said, "Hail, Master!" And he _kissed_ him. [50] Jesus said to him, "_Friend_, why are you here?" Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and _seized_ him.

6. Betrayed for 30 Pieces of Silver.
Zechariah 11:12-13 Then I said to them, "If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them." And they _weighed_ out as my wages thirty shekels of silver. [13] Then the LORD said to me, "Cast it into the treasury" --the _lordly_ price at _which_ I was paid off by them. So I took the thirty shekels of silver and cast them into the treasury in the _house_ of the LORD.

Matthew 26:14-16 Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief _priests_ [15] and said, "What will you give me if I _deliver_ him to you?" And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. [16] And from that moment he sought an _opportunity_ to betray him.

7. A Lamb to the Slaughter.
Isaiah 53:4-7 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. [5] But he was wounded for our _transgressions_, he was bruised for our _iniquities_; upon him was the _chastisement_ that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed. [6] All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the _iniquity_ of us all. [7] He was _oppressed_, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the _slaughter_, and like a sheep that before its _shearers_ is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.

John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming _toward_ him, and said, "_Behold_, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Acts 8:32-35 Now the passage of the scripture which he was reading was this: "As a sheep led to the _slaughter_ or a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so he opens not his mouth. [33] In his _humiliation_ justice was denied him. Who can _describe_ his _generation_? For his life is taken up from the earth." [34] And the eunuch said to Philip, "About whom, pray, does the prophet say this, about _himself_ or about some one else?" [35] Then Philip opened his mouth, and _beginning_ with this scripture he told him the good news of Jesus.

8. He Would Be Pierced, Not Stoned.
Psalms 22:16 Yea, dogs are round about me; a company of _evildoers_ _encircle_ me; they have pierced my hands and feet--

Luke 23:33 And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they _crucified_ him, and the _criminals_, one on the right and one on the left.

9. What Would Become of His Garments.
Psalms 22:18 They divide my _garments_ among them, and for my _raiment_ they cast lots.

Matthew 27:35 And when they had _crucified_ him, they divided his _garments_ among them by casting lots;

10. Jesus' Last Words.
Psalms 22:1 To the _choirmaster_: according to The Hind of the Dawn. A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, from the words of my _groaning_?

Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud _voice_, "Eli, Eli, la'ma sabach-tha'ni?" that is, "My God, my God, why hast thou _forsaken_ me?"

11. Not a Bone Was Broken.
Psalms 34:20 He keeps all his _bones_; not one of them is _broken_.

John 19:36 For these things took place that the _scripture_ might be _fulfilled_, "Not a bone of him shall be broken."

12. Where He Was Buried.
Isaiah 53:9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, _although_ he had done no _violence_, and there was no deceit in his mouth.

Matthew 27:57-60 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathe'a, named Joseph, who also was a _disciple_ of Jesus. [58] He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate _ordered_ it to be given to him. [59] And Joseph took the body, and _wrapped_ it in a clean linen shroud, [60] and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock; and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and _departed_.

13. Jesus Resurrection.
Psalms 16:10 For thou dost not give me up to _Sheol_, or let thy _godly_ one see the Pit.

Matthew 28:2-7 And behold, there was a great _earthquake_; for an angel of the Lord _descended_ from heaven and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. [3] His _appearance_ was like _lightning_, and his raiment white as snow. [4] And for fear of him the guards _trembled_ and became like dead men. [5] But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus who was _crucified_. [6] He is not here; for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. [7] Then go quickly and tell his _disciples_ that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. Lo, I have told you."
