1 2 3 4 5 1 Peter 1 - RWB Paraphrase (25 V) With Comments Go to top__ OR __Exit Comments 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who are scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2 chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and to be sprinkled with His blood. May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who by His great mercy has caused us to be born again into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an imperishable and undefiled inheritance that will not fade away, having been reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 Because of this you have great joy in spite of your many trials, 7 that your faith will prove more precious than gold, which can perish even after having been tested by fire. The result will be praise, glory and honor at the appearing of Jesus Christ. 8 Even though you have not seen Him, you love and believe in Him. Your joy is inexpressible and full of glory, 9 and because of your faith, you obtain your soul's salvation. 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who foretold of the grace that would come to you, carefully searched, 11 wishing to understand what the Spirit of God was telling them before hand about the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 12 It was revealed to them that what they were shown was not for them, but the Holy Spirit was using them to announce to you the gospel message from heaven, and preached to you, things which angels long to understand. COMMENT: So the prophets did not always fully understand what they were directed to write down. After things happen we can see that God knew all along what was to take place.
13 So you should prepare your minds, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that comes to you through the revelation of Jesus Christ.
14 As obedient children, do not follow the lusts of your former ignorance,
15 but be holy in all your behavior, like the Holy One who called you,
16 because it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy."
COMMENT: Leviticus 19:2 "Speak to all the children of Israel and tell them that I want them to be holy, for I the LORD God am holy."
17 And if you call on the Father, Who judges everyone impartially according to their work, conduct yourselves in the fear of the LORD during your time here on earth,
18 knowing that you were not redeemed from your futile ways with that which is perishable, such as gold or silver. You inherited those ways from your fathers.
19 You were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without spot or blemish.
20 For His sacrifice for us was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last days,
21 to those who believe in God who raised Jesus from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope might be in God.
22 Since you have purified your souls by obeying the truth through the spirit of sincere love of the brethren, love each other fervently,
23 for you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of the imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
COMMENT: When were are born into this world we are destined to die. When we are born again of the Spirit we are destined to live with God forever.
24 For, "All flesh is as grass, and the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers and the flower falls off."
25 But the word of the LORD endures forever. And this was the word that was preached to you.
COMMENT: Isaiah 40:8 "The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever."
COMMENT: Isaiah 28:16 "So this is what the LORD God says, 'I am laying a costly corner stone in Zion. It is a tested stone to be placed firmly for the foundation. Whoever believes in it will never be dismayed.'"
7 He is precious to you who believe, but to those who do not believe, the stone which was rejected, became the head of the corner,
COMMENT: Psalms 118:22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner stone.
8 and, a stone to stumble over and a rock of offense. They stumbled because of their disobedience to the word, and their doom is appointed.
COMMENT: Isaiah 8:14 "And He will be a sanctuary, but for both houses of Israel He will be a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock to make them fall. He will be a trap and a snare for the people of Jerusalem."
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
COMMENT: Isaiah 61:6 "You will be known as priests of the LORD, and ministers of our God. You will eat the wealth of nations, and boast in their riches."
10 For at one time you were not a people and had not received mercy, but now as the people of God you have received mercy.
COMMENT: Hosea 2:23 "I will plant her for Myself in the land. I will show my love to the one I previously said I did not love. Those who had not been called My people will become My people and they will say, 'You are my God.'."
11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers, abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against your soul.
12 Let your excellent behavior be a witness to the Gentiles so that they cannot accuse you of being evil, and as they see your good deeds they will glorify God in the day of His visitation.
13 For the LORD's sake submit yourself to governmental authorities,
14 and those set up by God to punish the evil doers. You will be appreciated by those who do right.
15 For it is God's will that as you do the right thing it will put to silence the ignorant and foolish men.
16 As free men and servants of God, never use your liberty as a cover for evil activity.
17 Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, whether they are good and gentle or unreasonable.
19 For one finds favor with God by bearing up under suffering when treated unjustly.
20 What credit is it to you if you do wrong and then patiently endure harsh treatment? But if you suffer when doing what is right, this is acceptable to God.
21 You have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for us, that we should follow His example,
22 "who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth."
COMMENT: Isaiah 53:9 "He was assigned a grave with wicked men, but a rich man gave Him his tomb. He did no violence. Neither was there deceit in anything He said."
23 While He was being reviled, He did not return in kind, nor threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously.
COMMENT: Isaiah 53:7 "He was oppressed and afflicted, but He did not protest. He was like a lamb led to be slaughtered, just as a sheep remains silent before her shearers, in that He did not open His mouth."
24 He bore our sins, so that we might die to sin and live righteously. By His wounds you were healed.
COMMENT: Isaiah 53:4 "He surely bore our griefs and carried our sorrows. We saw Him as stricken, afflicted and smitten by God."
25 For you were as sheep gone astray, but now have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
COMMENT: Isaiah 53:6 "Each of us have gone astray, turning to his own way. The LORD has caused the iniquity of all of us to fall on Him."
COMMENT: Genesis 18:12 She laughed to herself, saying, "After I am old, shall I then have this pleasure, since my lord is old also?"
7 Likewise, you husbands live with your wives remembering to treat them as weaker than yourselves, giving them honor as fellow heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
8 To sum it up, all of you should live in harmony, having compassion for one another, loving each other, being kindhearted and courteous.
9 Never return evil for evil, or insult for insult, but instead bless, for you were called for this purpose that you might also inherit a blessing.
10 For "The one who desires life, desiring to love, and to see good days, must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceit."
COMMENT: Psalms 34:12-13 Do you want to live a long life and see many good things? [13] Keep you tongue from speaking evil.
11 "He must turn away from evil doing good. He must seek peace and ensure that it continues."
COMMENT: Psalms 34:14 Do good and pursue peace.
12 "For the eyes of the LORD are turn the righteous and His ears attend to their prayers, but His face is against those who do evil."
COMMENT: Psalms 34:15-16 The eye of the LORD is upon the righteous and He hears their cry. [16] His face is turned against evildoers, so that their memory is cut off from the earth.
13 Who can harm you if you are zealous for that which is good?
COMMENT: Proverbs 16:7 "When a man's ways are pleasing to the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him."
14 But even if you do suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed, "Do not fear their intimidation, neither be troubled,"
COMMENT: Isaiah 8:12 "Do not call conspiracy everything that these people say it is. Do not fear what they fear."
15 but sanctify the LORD God in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to any who asks you about the hope you have, and doing so with gentleness and reverence.
16 Keep a good conscience so that if you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame,
17 for it is better, if God pleases, for you to suffer for doing what is right, than for doing what is wrong.
18 For Christ died once for sins for everyone, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having put the flesh to death, but having been made alive in the spirit.
19 It is good to remember that His Spirit pleaded with those who made their final choice,
20 whose disobedience tested the patience of God in the days of Noah while he was building the ark. At that time only eight persons were brought safely through the flood of water.
21 Corresponding to that, baptism saves you, not by the removal of dirt from the outer body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, by faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22 who is now in heaven at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities and powers, having been made subject to Him.
12 Beloved, do not be surprised by the fiery ordeal which comes upon you as a test, as though something strange is happening to you,
13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation.
14 If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because God's Spirit rests on you.
15 Make sure that you do not suffer as a murderer, thief, as an evildoer, or a troublesome meddler.
16 But if anyone suffers from being a Christian, he should glorify God and not be ashamed.
17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God. And if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not value the good news of the gospel of God?
18 "And if it is difficult for the righteous to be saved, what will be the outcome for the godless?"
COMMENT: Proverbs 11:31 "If the righteous receive their due on earth, how much more the ungodly and the sinner!"
19 Therefore, those who suffer according to the will of God shall trust their souls to a faithful Creator who is doing what is right.
