Music In Bible Times


Music was created by God and we can return praise to Him through music.

The Bible describes God as singing to us when we get to heaven - Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.

Some Old Testament Highlights of Music

Jubal is the father of all musicians - Genesis 4:21
And his brothers name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.

Moses and the sons of Israel sang a song to the Lord - Exodus 15:1
Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

Miriam and other women sing and dance to praise God - Exodus 15:20-21
And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. [21] And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

The Ark of the Covenant is accompanied by trumpeters - Numbers 31:6
And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the trumpets to blow in his hand.

Jericho fell to the sound of trumpets - Joshua 6:20
So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

The king's coronation is accompanied by music - 1 Kings 1:39-40
And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon. [40] And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.

There were musicians for the king's court - Ecclesiastes 2:8
I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.

Prophets making music - 1 Samuel 10:5
After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:

Saul needed music when he became depressed - 1 Samuel 16:14-16
But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him. [15] And Sauls servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. [16] Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

From David's time on, the use of music in worship was much more organized. Music for the temple became refined.

David spoke to the Levites about appointing singers - 1 Chronicles 15:16
And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.

Levite singers accompanied by instruments of music - 2 Chronicles 5:12-13
Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets:) [13] It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;

All kinds of musical instruments were to be used to praise the Lord - Psalm 150:3-5
Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. [4] Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. [5] Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.

Some New Testament Highlights of Music

In the New Testament, music was part of worship in the synagogues. Christians took this rich musical heritage with them when they were no longer welcome to worship in the synagogues. Even though music was mentioned less often in the New Testament, this does not mean that it was less important.

Jesus and the disciples sang a hymn - Matthew 26:30
And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

Paul and Silas sang while in jail - Acts 16:25
And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

We are to sing to the Lord as a response to what He has done in our lives - Ephesians 5:19-20
Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; [20] Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Encourage each other with music - Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Music can reflect our moods - James 5:13
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
