Neither A Borrower Or A Lender Be

This saying does not come from Scripture. It was taken from a soliloquy by Polonius in Act I, Scene 3 of William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Polonius is giving advice to his son Laertes before Laertes heads back to school. Here is more of the quote:

Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

USURY - In our modern day the term denotes a rate of interest greater than that which the law or public opinion permits. According to Biblical law, concerning all dealings between Israelites, all "increase" of the debt by reason of lapse of time or forbearance is forbidden, whether the rate of interest is low or high. This limit is not imposed on those dealings between Israelites and Gentiles. When discussing Jewish law the words "interest" and "usury" are interchangeable.

What Does the Scripture Says About Borrowing and Lending?

Exodus 22:25 If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury. If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury.

Leviticus 25:36-37 Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. [37] Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase. Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; That thy brother may live with thee. Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase.

Deuteronomy 23:19-20 Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of anything that is lent upon usury: [20] Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; But unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

Psalm 15:5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

Ezekiel 18:17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. He withholds his hand from sin and takes no usury or excessive interest.

When You Borrow You Become a Slave to the Lender.

Deuteronomy 15:6 For the LORD will bless you as He has promised and you will lend to many nations, but will not borrow. In this way you will rule over them and will not be ruled by them.

Two Verses That Seem to Promote Saving Money for the Interest Gained As a Minimum Use of Resources.

Matthew 25:27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.

Luke 19:23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?

English Law

When money is lent on a contract to receive not only the principal sum again, but also an increase by way of compensation for the use, the increase is called interest by those who think it lawful, and usury by those who do not. (William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England).

Is There Ever a Time to Borrow?

It would seem safe to say that the answer lies in additional questions.

1 - How important is this thing I want to borrow money for?
2 - Can I live happily without this purchase?
3 - Will this seem just as important in a month, or a year?
4 - What is my motive and ultimate goal in making this purchase?
5 - Will owning this money leave me time for the most important things?
