1 In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God and the Word was God.

COMMENT: Jesus is the Word. He has always been. He is God.

Psalms 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and the entire host of them by the breath of His mouth.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Colossians 1:17 He is before all things and in Him all things hold together.

1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard and looked upon with our eyes, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of Life,

John 17:5 "Now, O Father, glorify Me together with You, with the glory I had with You before the world was."

Philippians 2:5-8 Have the same attitude in yourselves as was in Christ Jesus, [6] who has always existed as God, but set this aside, [7] emptying Himself, taking human form as a servant. [8] As a human He humbled Himself, being obedient resulting in death on the cross.

Revelation 19:13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called, "The Word of God."

2 He was in the beginning with God.

COMMENT: Jesus has always been God along with His Father and the Holy Spirit. Without question, John believes that Jesus came from heaven and has always been God. When the word 'Beginning' is used, it refers to a time to far back to be able to comprehend. It is a time outside of human comprehension.

Hebrews 1:10 And, "You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands."

3 He made everything. Apart from Him nothing came into being.

COMMENT: This means that He made the sun, the moon, the stars and this earth with everything in it. It also means that He made heaven and everything in it, including Lucifer.

Colossians 1:16 By Him all things were created, in the heavens above and the earth beneath, both the visible and the invisible. All things, whether thrones or dominions, rulers or authorities. All of it has been created by Him and for Him.

Hebrews 1:2-3 and in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir to all things and through Whom He made the worlds. [3] He is the radiance of His Father's glory, an exact representation of His person, upholding all things by the word of His power. After making purification for our sins, He sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Job 1:6 There was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD. Satan also came among them.

Job 2:1 Once again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD. Satan also came among them to present himself.

4 In Him was life and the life was the Light of men.

COMMENT: Only the life giver could pay the price for us that our sin required of us. Darkness soaks up all light so that the light has no affect on the darkness. In Jesus was life that was not borrowed. This is not referring to physical life, but immortality, the exclusive property of God. Jesus said,

John 10:18 "No one forces Me to do this. I do it on My own initiative. I have the authority to lay it down and to take it up again. I have received this command from My Father."

5 The Light shines in the darkness but the darkness did not comprehended it.

COMMENT: With God there is light. On the first day of creation, before the sun shown on the fourth day, the light that constantly attends God caused the evening and the morning as God set the earth to spinning at just the right speed to give us the first evening and the morning.

John 3:19 "A person is condemned after he sees the Light of the world, and because of the evil within him, chooses darkness rather than the Light."

6 God sent a man named John. 7 He was a witness testifying about the Light so that everyone might recognize Him and believe.

COMMENT: Before God does anything of great moment, He always sends a messenger. John was that messenger, sent to herald the arrival of the Messiah. His birth had gone unnoticed by any but angels and a very few people. Obscurity as Jesus grew into manhood was part of God's plan. John's message was to remove that obscurity for those who were looking for the Messiah.

8 John was not the Light. His part was to testify of that Light.

COMMENT: Though John was not the Messiah, he caused no small stir. Jesus referred to John as the Elijah who was to come before the Messiah. When asked if he was Elijah, John's modesty seems to have prevented him from making that claim. He did refer to the passage in Isaiah which identified his mission as smoothing the way for the Messiah.

Isaiah 40:3-5 "A voice calls out, 'Clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness. Make a straight path in the desert for our God.'." [4] "Let every valley be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low. Let the rough ground be made level, and the rugged places a plain." [5] "Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all flesh will see it, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

9 This would be the true Light which was coming into the world to enlighten everyone. 10 Though He was in the world which He had made, the world did not recognize Him. 11 He came to His own and they did not receive Him.

COMMENT: The Jews had all the information needed in order to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. What held them back? They would not accept any answers that threatened their preconceived notions, especially if it threatened their position and status. They could have had it all and they tenaciously hung on to the crust of something much bigger.

12 To those who did receive Him and believe in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.

COMMENT: It may have seemed audacious, eternal life just for believing in His name. What did believing in His name amount to? Believing that He was the Son of God and the Messiah. It would also mean being willing to die for this belief. But it meant that believing in Jesus as God's Son meant that a life of sin was not all they had to look forward to. To become a child of God meant they could share in what Jesus had, with all the rights and privileges.

13 This caused them to be born of God instead of the will of the flesh.

COMMENT: You and I were born because out parents wanted children. Having children was the privilege God bequeathed to Adam and eve. None of us asked to be born, but most of us are thankful to be alive. However, we find ourselves to have been taken hostage and life is not what it should be until Jesus frees us from sin.

14 The Word was made flesh and lived among us. We saw the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

COMMENT: Jesus said that the earth is God's footstool. So in order to be able to save us from eternal loss, God devised a plan that included Jesus taking on human form, living life as we face it day by day. The only begotten of the Father was subjected to the fiercest temptations Satan could devise. The entire plan of salvation was full of grace and truth. Grace was not something new, exclusive to the New Testament. God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit has always been full of grace and truth. Jesus was the embodiment of this. The Old Testament along with the New Testament tells of God's grace, His unmerrited favor. For we do not deserve His grace.

Exodus 33:19 And the LORD said, "I will make all My goodness pass before you, proclaiming My name. I will be gracious to whomever I will be gracious, and show mercy on whomever I choose."

Psalms 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield, and He gives grace and glory, withholding nothing from those who walk uprightly.

Proverbs 3:34 "He mocks those who mock others, and gives grace to the humble."

Jonah 2:8 "Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace which could otherwise be theirs."

John 14:6 Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. The only way to the Father is through Me."

Romans 5:21 So that as sin reigned in death, grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

15 John bore witness of Him when he cried out, saying, "This is the One I spoke of when I said there is One coming after me Who existed before me."

COMMENT: This was John the Baptist.

16 His fullness has supplied us with complete grace.

COMMENT: When Jesus officially began His ministry He was prepared to supply us with complete grace, grace that was sufficient to save to the uttermost. He was prepared to supply grace upon grace, one blessing after another.

Psalms 45:2 You are fairer than the sons of men. Grace is on your lips and God has blessed You forever.

17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.

COMMENT: The law pointed out a person's lack. Grace is God's solution for the breaking of the law, and truth is all about who God is and what He expects us to become through His grace.

18 No one has ever seen God, except His only begotten who is in His close embrace. He has explained His Father.

COMMENT: The close relationship between the Father and the Son is expressed here. Lucifer wished to share in this embrace.

19 This is the testimony that John gave when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" 20 He readily confessed that he was not the Christ. 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Elijah?" John said, "I am not." They asked, "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."

COMMENT: The Prophet they were referring to was based on a text in Deuteronomy that pointed to the Messiah, the Christ who was to come.

Deuteronomy 18:15 "The LORD will raise up a Prophet from among you who is like me. Listen to Him."

22 "So, who are you," they asked."We need to take an answer back to those who sent us."

COMMENT: Evidently John the Baptist was not comfortable claiming to be Elijah. Jesus did, however, say this of John.

Matthew 11:14 "And you should realize that John is the Elijah to come."

23 John quoted Isaiah, saying, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the LORD.'"

COMMENT:

Isaiah 40:3 "A voice calls out, 'Clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness. Make a straight path in the desert for our God.'."

24 It was the Pharisees who had sent them. 25 Next they asked him, "If you not the Christ, or Elijah, or the Prophet, why are you baptizing?"

COMMENT: In other words, they are asking, "By what authority."

26 John answered, "I baptize with water, but among you stands One whom you do not know."

COMMENT: When we are baptized we must also be baptized by Jesus with the fire of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It can be our privilege to know Jesus Christ. He must become our Messiah. He is able to save us to the uttermost.

27 "He comes after me, but I am not worthy to untie His sandals."

COMMENT: We, too, must have an awe of Jesus. While we are to be confident in His friendship, familiarity is not to cause us to put too low an estimate on Who Jesus is.

28 This conversation took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan where John was baptizing.

29 The next day John saw Jesus and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world."

COMMENT: A lamb was used to remind the people that their individual sin cost the price of the blood of the lamb. But Jesus is here identified by John as prepared to take on the sin of the whole world.

30 "This is the One I spoke of when I said, 'After me comes a Man of much higher position than me. He existed before me.'"

COMMENT: Jesus has always existed from eternity past.

Philippians 2:5-6 Have the same attitude in yourselves as was in Christ Jesus, [6] who has always existed as God, but set this aside,

31 "Though I did not know Him, I came to point Him out to Israel. I do this by baptizing with water."

COMMENT: Even though John must have known of the angels announcing Jesus birth as the saviour of the world, it seems that though he was a relative of Jesus, had not understand that Jesus was the Messiah until the Holy Spirit revealed it to him.

Luke 2:11 "Today the Savior, who is Christ the LORD, has been born in Bethlehem, the city of David."

32 John testified, "I have seen the Spirit descend as a dove out of heaven and remain upon Him." 33 "Though I did not recognize Him, the One who sent me to baptize with water said to me, the One on whom you see the Spirit descend is the One who baptizes with fire."

COMMENT: There was nothing about Jesus make Him stand out. God had to point Him out to John the Baptist.

34 "I have seen and bare witness that this One is the Son of God."

COMMENT: They did not believe John's witness concerning who Jesus was.

Matthew 21:25-26 "What was the source of John's baptism? Was it from heaven, or from men?" They reasoned that if they answered from heaven, He would ask, "Why did you not believed his message?" [26] But if they said from men, they would have the people to deal with, for the people believed John to be a prophet.

35 The next day John was standing with two of his disciples. 36 He looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" 37 His two disciples heard what he said and they followed Jesus.

COMMENT: These two disciple understood the term 'Lamb of God' to be the expected Messiah who would be God's sacrifice for those who would believe. They may have mistook Him as the conquering King, but they also made a connection with the lambs sacrificed in the temple, and they followed Jesus.

38 As they followed Jesus, He turned to them and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Teacher, where are You staying?" 39 He said, "Come and see." So they came and saw where He was staying. It was about the tenth hour (4 o'clock in the afternoon), so they stayed with Him there.

COMMENT: Jesus always invited us to 'Come and see!'

40 One of the two was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He went to find Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah," which translates to mean Christ. 42 Andrew brought his brother to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are called Simon, son of John. You shall be called Cephas." That translates to Peter.

COMMENT: This was intentional on the part of Andrew. You and I are to intentionally to bring people to Jesus.
Jesus called Simon son of John Peter. He could read Peter's future and yet, He loved Him, not for what he was but for what he would become when he was converted. How many of us consider ourselves to be Christian, and yet we need to be converted?

43 The following day Jesus proposed to go to Galilee. There he found Philip and said to him, "Follow Me."

COMMENT: Jesus knew who He wanted to be His close disciples. He to went where they were.

44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the same as Andrew and Peter.

COMMENT: The early disciples were acquainted with one another.

45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law and the Prophets. He is Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

COMMENT: In some cases Jesus called them and in others He used them to call others.

46 Nathanael replied, "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" Philip said, "Come see."

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming and said of him, "Here is an Israelite without guile."

COMMENT: I want Jesus to say of me, "Here is one in whom there is no guile." Don't you?

48 Nathanael said to Him, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."

COMMENT: I believe Jesus watches you and me and He knows what we are up to.

49 Nathanael then said to Him, "You are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel."

COMMENT: What makes you believe Jesus is who He claims to be?

50 Jesus answered him, saying, "Because I said I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see even greater things than this." 51 Then Jesus added, "The truth is, you will see the heavens opened and the angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

COMMENT: As you believe in Jesus, He gives you more reasons to believe in Him.

Genesis 28:12 Jacob had a dream in which he saw a ladder reaching up to heaven. Angels of God were going up and down this ladder.

1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and He and his disciples had been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine ran out, Jesus' mother told him about it. 4 Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you telling Me about this? My hour has not yet come."

COMMENT: Mary seems to have had some expectations of Jesus. Why would she think He could or should do something about the lack of wine? It might seem that she was merely making a comment. But Jesus' response suggests that she was asking Him to intervene. When He addressed her as woman, it was not in anyway disrespectful. Jesus' life was mapped out for Him by the Father. This miracle was not on the map. It wasn't yet time for it. But in deference to His mother He did this.

John 7:6 Jesus said to them, "Its is not the right time for Me, but, it's always the right time for you."

5 His mother told the servants, "Do whatever He tells you to do."

COMMENT: Evidently she thought He might do something.

6 There were six stone water pots nearby used for the Jewish custom of purification. Each one could hold close to fifteen gallons.

COMMENT: This custom of purification was the ceremonial washing of hands before and after meals. The stone jars were preferable to ordinary earthenware and suggest the family was wealthy.

7 Jesus said to them, "Fill these water pots with water." So they filled the water pots. 8 Then He said, "Draw some out and take it to the one in charge of the feast." and they did this. 9 When the man in charge of the feast tasted the water that had become wine, and not knowing where it had come from, he called the bridegroom, 10 and said to him, "People always serve the best wine first and after people have had plenty to drink, then they serve the poorer wine. You have kept the good wine until now."

COMMENT: Whatever Jesus does, it is the best.

11 This was the first of the signs Jesus did to show His glory in Galilee, and His disciples believed in Him.

12 After this Jesus went to Capernaum for a few days with His mother and His disciples. 13 The Passover of the Jews was near so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 When He went into the temple He found people selling oxen, sheep and doves. And there were money changers sitting at their tables. 15 He made a scourge of cords and with it drove the marketers, their animals and the money changers out of the temple. He turned over the tables of the money changers scattering their coins. 16 Speaking to those who sold the doves He said, "Take these things out of here. My Father's house is not a place to buy and sell merchandise."

COMMENT: Shouldn't we be careful what we do in God's house that may distract people's minds from worship? The only thing for sale in God's house should be what is found in Isaiah.

Isaiah 55:1-3 "Come, everyone who is thirsty. Come to the waters, you who have no money. Come, buy and eat! Yes, come, buy wine and milk without cost." [2] "Why spend money for what is not bread, and what you earn for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me. Eat what is good, and be delighted with an abundance." [3] "Listen to Me, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, according to the everlasting covenant I made with David."

Matthew 13:46 "When he finds the one pearl of surpassing value, he sells everything he has in order to obtain that one pearl."

17 His disciples remembered that it is written, "Zeal for Your house will consume Me."

COMMENT:

Psalms 69:9 Zeal for Your house has consumed me and the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.

18 The Jews said to Him, "What sign do You show us to establish Your authority for doing what You just did?" 19 He answered, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."

COMMENT: The only sign He was offering was that after they killed Him He would rise again.

20 The Jews said to Him, "It took forty six years to build this temple. Will you raise it up in three days?" 21 But Jesus was speaking of the temple of His body.

COMMENT: Perhaps when He said 'This temple,' He pointed to Himself. When we are in God's house we should give ever aware that the most important temple for God to dwell in is our hearts.

22 When Jesus was raised from the dead, His disciples would recall what He had said on this occasion and believe the scripture, as well as Jesus words.

23 During this Passover, many of the people believed in Jesus, having observed the signs He did. 24 But Jesus did not trust Himself to them, for He knew all men. 25 He did not need anyone to tell Him about mankind for He knew what was in man.

1 Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews.

COMMENT: Nicodemus is a Greek name. He was a Pharisee and had to be a Jew of very good standing. So he may have had parents who had lived in Greece where he was born. Perhaps he was more willing to think outside the box, so to speak. Somehow he had the ability to consider that Jesus spoke the truth.

2 He came to see Jesus at night, saying, "Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher. No one can do the signs you do unless God is with Him."

COMMENT: But Nicodemus did not yet see Jesus as God. And he was fearful lest someone see him with Jesus having this private conversation. This shows that signs are a help but by themselves are not enough. Unless the Spirit of God can get through to us, our sorting through the logic of the evidence will not satisfy our longing for what God offers to us.

3 Jesus replied by saying, "The truth is, no one can see God's kingdom unless he is born again."

COMMENT: Nicodemus thought of himself as already born into God's kingdom because Abraham was his forefather.

4 Nicodemus responded by asking, "How can a man be born after he becomes old? Can he go into his mother's womb and be born a second time?"

COMMENT: Nicodemus may have been honest as he pondered what to him seemed ridiculous. After all, he was Jewish. He was already in a saved condition. But Jesus was not put off.

5 Jesus said, "The truth is, unless a person is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter God's kingdom."

COMMENT: Jesus refers to baptism, even for believers. John said that he baptized with water but One would come who would baptize with fire (which is a symbol of the Spirit of God).

Revelation 4:5 Lightening, thunder and voices came from the throne. Seven lamps of fire which were the seven Spirits of God burned before the throne.

Luke 3:16 John answered, "I baptized with water but One mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to untie His shoes. He will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire."

Ezekiel 36:25-27 "I will sprinkle you with clean water, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and your idols." [26] "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you. I will replace your heart of stone with a heart of flesh." [27] "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances."

6 "What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit."

COMMENT: Until we are born of God we remain in a lost human condition.

7 "Do not be amazed when I tell you that you must be born again." 8 "The wind blows and you hear its sound. You do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with those born of the Spirit."

COMMENT: The change the Holy Spirit brings about in us can at times seem imperceptible. Like our gardens, it can grow slowly.

Ecclesiastes 11:5 "Just as you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, who makes all things."

9 Nicodemus said, "How can this be?"

COMMENT: Maybe Nicodemus is really asking, "How can I not already be in a save condition?"

10 Jesus replied, "You are a teacher of Israel. How is it that you do not understand this?"

COMMENT: Obviously Jesus is saying that the scriptures explain this.

11 "The truth is, we speak of what we know and tell about what we have seen. But you do not accept our testimony."

COMMENT: This truth is in the scripture.

12 "If I tell you earthly things, and you do not believe, how will you believe what I tell you about heaven?"

COMMENT: Heavenly things are available to us.

13 "No one has been to heaven except He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man."

COMMENT:

Proverbs 30:4 "Who has ascended into heaven and come back? Who has gathered the wind in His fists, or wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son's name? Surely you know!"

14 "Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up."

COMMENT: The bronze serpent that Moses lifted up on the pole for the people to look at and live represented Christ who was to be made sin for us. Satan spoke to Eve through a serpent. Always after this the serpent was despised. Jesus became that which was despised for our sake that we might live.

Numbers 21:8 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole. Anyone who has been bitten and looks at this fiery serpent, shall live."

15 "This is done so that those who believe in Him may have eternal life." 16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life."

COMMENT: Jesus was begotten of a women. God did this miracle in order that Jesus might live among us and be able to say that He has walked where we walk. He overcame as we must also overcome by His power. He relied in His heavenly Father and so must we.

17 "For God did not send His Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world through Him might be saved."

COMMENT: God has always wanted to save mankind. Judgment comes when we steadfastly refuse His offer of salvation. While it does require our faith and obedience, salvation is easier than rebellion.

18 "He who believes in Him is not condemned. He who does not believe is judged unworthy because he did not believe in the only begotten Son of God."

COMMENT: To believe in Jesus means more than believing He came to save us. To believe in Him is to believe what He believed.

19 "A person is condemned after he sees the Light of the world, and because of the evil within him, chooses darkness rather than the Light."

COMMENT: To continue to choose darkness after seeing the light is damning. We cannot say we are choosing Christ and then prefer the darkness of our former life.

20 "Those who do evil hate the Light, fearing to come to it because it exposes their evil deeds." 21 "The one practicing the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be shown to have come from God."

COMMENT: As we come to Jesus, God gets the credit for what we do right.

22 After this Jesus and His disciples went to Judea where He was spending time with them and baptizing. 23 John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salim because there was lots of water there. People were coming to be baptized, 24 because John had not yet been put in prison.

25 John's disciples had a discussion with some of the Jews about purification. 26 Coming to John they said, "Rabbi, the One you testified to beyond the Jordon, is baptizing and everyone is coming to Him." 27 John answered saying, "A man cannot have what Jesus has unless it comes from heaven." 28 "You remember that I said, 'I am not the Christ. I have been sent ahead of Him.'" 29 "It is the bridegroom who has the bride. His friend bears witness of this and rejoices at the sound of the bridegroom's voice. For this reason my joy for Him is complete."

COMMENT: When the best man would hear the bridegroom's voice he was hearing the confirmation of the Union of the bride and the groom. And Christ wants to confirm His Union with each of us.

30 "He must increase, and I must decrease."

COMMENT: O that we could always accept what God determines as best for us that we may best glorify Him. How else can the devil's claims against God be refuted.

31 "He who is from the earth speaks earthly things, while He who comes from heaven is above all." 32 "He tells of what He has seen and heard, but no one receives His testimony." 33 He who believes His testimony testifies that God is true.

COMMENT: Remember that God is full of grace and truth. And God is true to His word.

John 1:14 The Word was made flesh and lived among us. We saw the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.

34 "For He Whom God has sent speaks the Words of God, for He gives Him the Spirit without measure." 35 "The Father loves the Son and has given everything into His hand." 36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life. And he who does not believe in the Son shall not have eternal life because God's wrath rests on him."

COMMENT:

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life."

John 3:18 "He who believes in Him is not condemned. He who does not believe is judged unworthy because he did not believe in the only begotten Son of God."

John 20:31 These things have been recorded so that you may believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that by believing, you may have eternal life through His name.

1 Now when the LORD knew that the Pharisees had heard that He was making and baptizing more disciples than John, 2 although it was His disciples doing the baptizing, and not He Himself, 3 he left Judea and went to Galilee.

COMMENT: Jesus did not needlessly stir up trouble.

4 On His way Jesus passed through Samaria.

COMMENT: He could have gone around but He had work to do there.

5 He came to the city of Sychar in Samaria which is near the parcel of ground Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Being weary, Jesus sat down to rest by Jacob's well which was outside the city. It was about the sixth hour, or twelve noon.

COMMENT: Jesus was so human. He became weary like we all do. Maybe he had spent much of the night or the early morning in prayer.

7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water and Jesus asked her for a drink.

COMMENT: This woman came at a time when other women were not coming. Maybe she just ran our of water at that time of day and came for more. Or, more likely, she didn't want to be there when the other women came and be exposed to their ridicule.

8 Jesus was alone, for His disciples had gone into the city to buy food.

COMMENT: We need to remember that people will often respond to our need sooner then they will admit to having a need we might supply.

9 The Samaritan woman asked Him, "How is it that You, a Jew, ask a drink from a Samaritan woman?" For the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered, "If you knew of the gift of God and who is asking you for water, you would ask Him and He would give you living water."

COMMENT: Jesus made a very direct offer. In some cases there is no need to beat around the bush.

11 She said, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where do You get this living water?"

COMMENT: Though it is not addressed in this account, everyone must have brought a rope to let their water pot down into the well. How many ropes do we lug around as we attempt to meet our own needs? And Jesus promises to meet all our needs.

12 "Are You greater than our father Jacob, who drank from this well, as did his family and his cattle."

COMMENT: This well was highly valued, not just for water but also because of whose it was to begin with. And her words were an attempt to show that the Jews were not the only ones with a noteworthy heritage.

13 Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks from this well will be thirsty again."

COMMENT: Jesus here makes a statement that had been true for everyone who ever had ever drunk the water from this well. It was no doubt good water, but a person always got thirsty again.

14 "But whoever drinks the water I have to give shall never thirst again, because the water I give becomes a spring of eternal life in him."

COMMENT: Jesus is talking about spiritual completeness and full joy. The woman senses that He is talking about something she cannot understand, but her interest is peaks and she wants this water.

Isaiah 55:1 "Come, everyone who is thirsty. Come to the waters, you who have no money. Come, buy and eat! Yes, come, buy wine and milk without cost."

15 The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water so that I will not have to come all the way to this well to draw water."

COMMENT: The fact that He is offering her water after He has asked for a drink does not get in the way. She believes. The Holy Spirit is working in her. She is not throwing up any defence.

16 Jesus then said, "Go call your husband." 17 The woman said, "I don't have a husband." Jesus said, "You are telling the truth," 18 "in fact, you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. You have spoken the truth." 19 The woman replied, "Sir I can see that You are a prophet." 20 "Our fathers worshiped in this mountain. Your people say that Jerusalem is the place where men are to worship."

COMMENT:

1 Kings 12:28 So Jeroboam made two golden calves and said to the people, "It is too far for you to go to Jerusalem. Behold. Here are your gods who brought you up out of Egypt."

21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when people will not worship the Father in one special place." 22 "You worship without understanding who you worship. We know who we worship because salvation comes from the Jews."

COMMENT:

Isaiah 2:3 Many people will say, "Let us go up to the mountain of the LORD and to the house of Jacob, that He may teach us His ways, and that we may walk in them." For the law will proceed out of Zion and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

23 "But the hour is coming, and even now is, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. The Father is looking for such people to be His worshipers." 24 "God is spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." 25 The woman said to Him, "I know that the Messiah, the One called Christ, will declare all things to us when He comes."

COMMENT: The Samaritans shared enough spiritual heritage with the Jews to be looking for Christ the Messiah.

26 Jesus said to her, "I am the that One."

COMMENT: And the woman believed Him when He said this. The Holy Spirit had gotten through to her.

27 At this moment His disciples returned and were amazed to find Him speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him why He was doing this?

COMMENT: No proper Jew would speak privately with a woman without someone else present. Jesus did not stand on ceremony.

28 The woman left her water pot where she had set it and went into the city and spoke to the men there.

COMMENT: If she had carried the water pot back to her house it would have slowed her down. She seems to have forgotten her reason for coming to the well. She had found something more important than the water she came for. And the disciples benefited, too. They could now drink water from the well.

29 Arriving in the city she said to them, "Come see a Man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"

COMMENT: Evidently that community had some interest in spiritual things.

30 They went out of the city to meet Him.

COMMENT: This woman's testimony brought them to Jesus, even though she was not used to being taken seriously.

31 Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus to eat.

COMMENT: Sharing truth took away Jesus need for the food the disciples had gone to get.

32 But He said to them, "I have already had food which you do not know about." 33 They wondered together, "Did someone bring Him something to eat?" 34 Jesus then told them, "Doing the work My Father sent Me to do satisfies like food." 35 "You may think that the harvest is four months away. If you look about you will see fields white for harvest." 36 "Those who reap are already receiving wages as they gather fruit for eternal life. One sows and another reaps. But they rejoice together." 37 "It is a true saying: One sows, and another reaps." 38 "I am sending you to reap what you did not plant. When you reap you are sharing in the labor of those who planted." 39 Many of the Samaritans from that city believed in Jesus because of the testimony of the woman who said, "He told me everything I ever did."

40 Because of this many of the Samaritans were asking Jesus to stay with them. So He remained there two days. 41 And many of them believed because of what they heard Him say. 42 They said to the woman, "At first we believed because of what you said about Him. Now we believe because we have heard for ourselves and know that He is the Savior of the world."

COMMENT: Why were they so easily convinced while the Jewish leaders were not? Was it because they did not cling to preconceived ideas of what the Messiah would do? Did Jesus preach a different message to the Samaritans than He did to the Jews? For sure the Samaritans were not threatened by what He said to them.

Here is a mission model for us. Tell people truthfully what Christ has done for us. Then they may want to see for themselves. It is still up to the Holy Spirit to convince them.

43 After being with the Samaritans for two days, Jesus left for Galilee. 44 He was saying, "A prophet has no honor in His own country." 45 When He came to Galilee, the people in that area received Him because of the things they had seen Him do at the feast in Jerusalem. 46 And He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a royal official of Capernaum whose son was sick. 47 Having heard that Jesus had come up from Judea, he went to Him and begged Him to come and heal his son who was at the point of death. 48 Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe."

COMMENT: Something about the man's request elicited this response from Jesus. After all, the previous verse said that the people of the area were interested in Him because of the signs He did.

49 The royal official said to Him, "Sir, come before my son dies."

COMMENT: But the man persisted, perhaps recognizing the truth of what Jesus said, and worrying that this might prevent his son from being healed.

50 Jesus said to him, "Go. You son lives." The man believed Him and started for home. 51 On his way home his servants met him with the news that his son was better. 52 He asked them, "At what hour did my son get better?" They answered, "Yesterday at about the seventh hour (one o'clock) the fever left him." 53 The father knew that it was at this time of day the Jesus had said to him, "Your son lives." He and his entire household believed. 54 This was the second sign Jesus performed when He came to Galilee from Judea.

1 After this Jesus went to a feast in Jerusalem that the Jews celebrated each year. 2 Jerusalem had a pool by the sheep gate. Its Hebrew name was Bethesda. This pool had five porches.

COMMENT: Bethesda probably means "House of Mercy." Until the 19th century, there was no evidence outside of John's Gospel for the existence of this pool. For this reason scholars argued that the gospel was written later, probably by someone without first-hand knowledge of the city of Jerusalem, and that the "Pool" had only a metaphorical, rather than historical, significance. In the 19th century, archaeologists discovered the remains of a pool fitting the description in John's Gospel. The pool was 55 feet long and 12 feet across. Five arches supported the floor of an ancient church that had been built above it.

3 On these porches lots of sick people, some blind and some lame, waited for a movement of the water. 4 It was believed that an angel came down at certain times and stirred the water. Whoever stepped into the water first would then be healed.

5 A man was there who had been ill for thirty eight years.

COMMENT: This was a pathetic man. He moved with difficulty. He had decided that he was without hope. Thirty eight years had taught him that he would never get well.

6 When Jesus saw him He knew he had been there a long time. He asked the man, "Do you want to be whole?"

COMMENT: It seems like a strange question, since the man had been by this pool for so long and had been brought there for the purpose of being healed. But it reminds us that we can go through the motions after we loose hope.

7 The man answered, "Sir, I have no one to help me into the water when it is stirred. Someone always gets in before me." 8 Jesus said to him, "Get up. Pick up your bed and walk."

COMMENT: Did this man know who Jesus was? Was there something about Jesus that made the man want to believe?

9 Immediately the man was made whole. He got up and began to carry his bed. It was the Sabbath.

COMMENT: The man did not stop to question the possibility of having been healed. He acted on the Jesus' words. Perhaps he felt revitalizing power. Perhaps he felt well for the first time in a long time. Jesus told the man to carry his bed on the Sabbath. Carrying his bed was not the sort of work God had forbidden people to do in the fourth commandment. God had forbidden gainful employment on the Sabbath. God never made a rule about how far you could walk on the Sabbath, or what you could carry. After completing the creation of everything in six days, God "Ceasing from His work of creating". God had prohibited activities that were the opposite of rest. This would include activities that led to the increased of one's net worth, such as planting, weeding, reaping, building, painting, etc.

10 So the Jews accosted the man saying, "It is the Sabbath and you cannot carry your bed today."

COMMENT: Many of those around this scene knew that this man had been ill for a very long time. This fact seems to have been brushed aside by the Pharisees who had lost sight of the real purpose of the Sabbath. They worshiped their own laws and their power to enforce them more then they worshiped the God who gave the Sabbath. The fact of his miraculous healing meant nothing to them.

11 The man replied, "The One who made me well told me to pick up my bed and walk." 12 They asked him, "Who told you to do this?" 13 He said that he did not know who had healed him, for Jesus had slipped away.

COMMENT: Jesus had healed the man without fanfare. He didn't heal him to make a believer of him. He had pitty on him and wanted to relieve his suffering.

14 Later that same day Jesus found the man in the temple and said, "Now that you are whole do not sin any more lest something worse befall you."

COMMENT: The fact that the man was in the temple suggests that he was worshiping God. Evidently his illness had resulted from having sinned, or Jesus would not have said what He did.

15 The man went and found the Jews and told them it was Jesus who had made him well.

COMMENT: Although this man must have appreciated what Jesus had done for him, he seems to have also respected the Jewish leaders. So he went to find them and tell them who had healed him. He must not have realized they were finding fault with Jesus. And perhaps what Jesus had said to him bothered him a little.

16 Because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath the Jews gave Him a very hard time. 17 He answered them saying, "My Father is always at work and I work, too." 18 For this reason the Jews wanted to kill Jesus. He was not only breaking the Sabbath, but had also made Himself equal with God.

COMMENT: Since Jesus did not meet their qualifications for the Messiah, they stubbornly resisted all the evidence.

19 Jesus said to them, "The truth is, the Son can do nothing on His own. He only does what He sees the Father doing."

COMMENT: Jesus could not make His claim to be the Son of God any clearer.

20 "For the Father loves the Son and shows Him whatever He is doing. And the Father will show Him greater things than these that you may marvel." 21 "For just as the Father raises the dead to new life, even so the Son gives life to whomever He wants." 22 "The Father does not judge anyone, but has turned all judgment over to His Son." 23 "For this cause all will honor the Son just as they honor the Father. And those who do not honor the Son are not honoring the Father."

COMMENT: Here was a warning to those who found fault with Jesus. A day of judgment was coming for them. They did not appreciate Who it was they were accusing.

24 "I tell you the truth, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and is not condemned, but passes from death unto life."

COMMENT:

John 3:18 "He who believes in Him is not condemned. He who does not believe is judged unworthy because he did not believe in the only begotten Son of God."

25 "And the hour is not far off when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live."

COMMENT: The hour was in fact not that far off.

Matthew 27:50-53 Jesus cried out once more with a loud voice and then yielded up His spirit. [51] At this moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth shook. Rocks were split. [52] Tombs were opened and many bodies of saints who had fallen asleep were raised. [53] After His resurrection they came out of their tombs and entered the holy city where they were seen by many.

26 "For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has given to the Son to have life in Himself."

COMMENT: John gives several quotes of Jesus' claim to be the Son of God. Did the Jews have an understanding of Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

27 "He has given Him authority to execute judgment because He is the Son of Man."

COMMENT: As the Son of Man, Jesus is uniquely qualified to judge humanity.

28 "Do not marvel when I say that the time is coming when those in the graves will hear His voice."

COMMENT: This was fulfilled not long after this. Jesus was raised first followed by others who would go to heaven with Him.

Psalms 68:18 You have ascended on high, led captive Your captives, and received gifts among men. Even the rebellious recognize You as the LORD God.

Ephesians 4:8 Therefore, He says, when He ascended on high, "He led captive a host of captives and He gave gifts to men."

29 "They will come forth to the resurrection of life if their deeds were good, or if their deeds were evil, to the resurrection of judgment."

COMMENT: Do not fall for the idea that God will save everyone. Jesus plainly says that evil deeds result in judgment at the resurrection.

30 "I can do nothing on My own. As I hear, I judge. And My judgment is just because I am not seeking My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me." 31 "If I am My only witness then what I say is not true." 32 "But there is another who testifies of Me. I know that His testimony about Me is true."

COMMENT:

Mark 1:11 A voice from heaven said, "You are my beloved Son. I am well pleased with You."

Mark 9:7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him!"

Luke 3:22 The Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove, and a voice from heaven said, "You are My beloved Son. I am well pleased with You."

33 "You went out to hear John. He testified to the truth."

COMMENT:

John 1:36 He looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"

34 "And the testimony I receive is not from man. I say these things so that you may be saved." 35 "John was a bright light and for a while you rejoiced in his light." 36 "I have a greater testimony than John had. The things I am doing the Father gave Me to do. And these things bear witness to the fact that the Father has sent Me."

COMMENT: Here Jesus made a strong appeal to be recognized as being more than a prophet. He was in fact the Prophet Moses referred to.

Deuteronomy 18:18 "He said that He would raise up a prophet from among you like me, and He would put His words in His mouth. He shall speak everything the LORD commands Him."

37 "The Father who sent Me has testified of Me. You have not heard His voice or seen His form." 38 "His word does not abide in you because you do not believe the One He has sent."

COMMENT: If we do not believe that Jesus is God's Son we cannot speak for God.

39 "You search the scriptures because you see them as the source of eternal life. It is these scriptures that testify of Me."

COMMENT: The scriptures of what we know as the Old Testament give more than ample evidence of Jesus' mission. The Jews should have recognized Jesus as sent from God. Can we miss the boat, so to speak in our day, not properly appreciating what Jesus has accomplished and is accomplishing?

40 "Yet you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life." 41 "I do not receive honor from men." 42 "I know that you do not have the love of God in you." 43 "I have come in My Father's name and you have not received Me. Yet you willingly accept one who comes in his own name."

COMMENT: Jesus was here addressing the Pharisees.

44 "How can you believe? You receive honor from one another instead of from the one and only God."

COMMENT: Their studied obstinacy would be maddening to any but the merciful and patient God. How long suffering He is with us. When we get an idea that we will not let go, in mercy He sometimes has to blind us to everything in order that we may consider an idea from the perspective of hopelessness.

45 "I do not need to accuse you before God. Moses, whom you trust, has already done this." 46 "If you really believed Moses, you would also believe Me, for he wrote about Me." 47 "If you will not believe what he has written, how then will you believe what I say?"

COMMENT: What Jesus taught was based on what Moses had written. Jesus did not bring a new teaching. Truth is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. The teaching was the same but the understanding needed to be new. New ideas about old truths require an investment of time and thought. These are in short supply when we demand quick answers and adherence to what we have always believed.

1 After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. 2 A large crowd followed Him because He healed people. 3 Then Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down with His disciples. 4 It was close to the time of Passover, a Jewish feast.

COMMENT:

Deuteronomy 16:1 "Celebrate the Passover to the LORD your God in the month of Abib, the same month the LORD brought you out of Egypt."

5 Jesus looked around and seeing the large crowd, He said to Philip, "Where can we buy enough bread to feed all these people?" 6 He was testing Philip, for He knew what He was about to do. 7 Philip answered, "Two hundred day's wages would not buy enough bread for all these people." 8 Andrew, another disciple, the brother of Peter, said, 9 "There is a lad with five barley loaves and two fish. But what help is that?"

COMMENT: Was Andrew thinking Jesus might do something like He had done with the wine at the wedding?

10 Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass and about five thousand men sat down on the mountain. 11 Taking the boy's lunch, Jesus gave thanks, and had the bread and fish distributed to those who were seated. There was enough food for everyone to have all they wanted. 12 When they had eaten their fill, Jesus had his disciples gather up the leftovers so that nothing was lost.

COMMENT: This was not just to preserve the leftovers. It served to demonstrate that God provides enough and then some.

13 And they filled twelve baskets with what was left over after everyone had eaten his fill.

COMMENT: Imagine what must have been going through the mind of the lad who gave his lunch to Jesus.

14 The people were very impressed and said, "This Man is surely the Prophet who is to come into the world."

COMMENT: The prophet they were looking for was the one Moses had said would come.

Deuteronomy 18:18 "He said that He would raise up a prophet from among you like me, and He would put His words in His mouth. He shall speak everything the LORD commands Him."

15 Perceiving that the people intended to take Him by force and make Him their king, Jesus withdrew to the mountain to be alone.

16 When evening had come His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into their boat and started across to Capernaum. It was now dark and Jesus was no where around.

COMMENT: Matthew and Mark explain that Jesus told the disciples to leave in the boat without Him.

Matthew 14:21-22 There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children. [22] Immediately Jesus commanded His disciples to get in the boat and head for the other side without Him. He would dismissed the crowds.

Mark 6:45 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to Bethsaida on the other side while He stayed behind to dismiss the crowd.

18 Strong winds came up and whipped up the sea. 19 After the disciples had rowed three or four miles they saw Jesus walking on the water coming toward the boat. However, they could not explain what they were seeing and were afraid.

COMMENT: Why did Jesus come walking on the water? Why not just be waiting for them on the other side of the lake when they got there? The disciples may have been having a crisis of confidence that Jesus was the Messiah. They wanted, along with the crowd Jesus had fed, to make Him king. He had refused. It didn't make sense to them. Was He the Messiah everyone said would set up the world kingdom that they had been taught to expect? So Jesus came walking on the water, something no ordinary man could do. Here was more evidence that He was more than a mere man. He was God's Son, even if He was not living up to their expectations.

20 Jesus called to them, saying, "It is I. Do not be afraid." 21 So they were happy to have Him get into the boat with them and once He had entered the boat, they were immediately at their destination.

COMMENT: Arriving so quickly was another miracle.

22 The following day the crowd that had been with Him on the other side of the sea knew His disciples had left that place without Him. 23 Other small boats came from places near where Jesus had fed them. 24 Seeing that Jesus was no longer there they got into the small boats and came over to Capernaum to look for Him. 25 When they found Him on the other side, they asked, "Teacher, how did You get here?" 26 Jesus said, "The truth is, you are looking for Me because you saw signs and had your fill of bread." 27 "Do not work for food that will not last. Rather, seek the food that leads to eternal life. This is what the Son of Man wants to give you. This is the Bread God the Father has set His seal on."

COMMENT: How long before we learn to want something better than great tasting food? How do we learn to crave spiritual food?

Isaiah 55:2 "Why spend money for what is not bread, and what you earn for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me. Eat what is good, and be delighted with an abundance."

28 So they asked Him, "What shall we do in order to do the work of God?" 29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is to believe in the One whom He has sent."

COMMENT: This is everyone's first work - to believe in Jesus, the One sent from the Father. And everything we do prepares us for the next work to be done.

We can do all manner of good works, but if we do not rely on (believe in) Jesus, our work is of no real value. We are fooling ourselves to think otherwise.

1 John 3:23 And this is His commandment, that we should believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another just as He commanded.

30 So they asked Jesus, "What sign will You do that we may see and believe You are Who You say You are?" 31 "Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness. As it was written, He gave them bread from heaven."

COMMENT: Some of them, or someone they knew, must have eaten the bread Jesus fed them from the five loaves. It was like manna.

32 Jesus replied, "The truth is, it was not Moses who gave you this bread from heaven. And it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven." 33 "For the bread of God is that which comes from heaven. And it gives life to the world."

COMMENT: So Jesus is the true bread sent from heaven by the Father.

34 Then they said, "Lord, give us this bread so that we may always have it."

COMMENT: In one breath they ask for yet another sign and in the next they ask for the bread Jesus offers.

35 Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst."

COMMENT: So what was Jesus promising? With regular food and drink we always have to have more and have it regularly. Isn't that also true with the bread and water of life? People may wonder where their next meal is coming from. Life can be uncertain. But Jesus can be depended on, not only for our spiritual needs, but also for our temporal needs. We must, however, put first things first.

36 "But it is plain to Me that though you have seen Me you do not believe I am who I say I am." 37 "Everyone the Father gives Me will be Mine. And those who come to Me I will certainly not cast out."

38 "I came down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him Who sent Me."

COMMENT: Here Jesus plainly says that He came from heaven.

39 "And His will is that I do not lose any of those He has given to me, but to raise them up at the last day." 40 "The will of My Father is that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life. I Myself will raise him up on the last day."

COMMENT: Jesus certainly left them without excuse to know where He came from and what He was to accomplish. And He gave hope of a life beyond this life.

41 The Jewish leaders grumbled because Jesus had said that He was the bread that came down from heaven.

COMMENT: Perhaps some of the Jewish leaders saw a correlation between Jesus' claim to have come from heaven and the shewbread used in the temple service.

42 They were saying, "Isn't this Jesus, Joseph's son? Don't we know His father and mother? How can He say that He came from heaven?"

COMMENT: They did not know of His miracle birth.

43 Jesus answered them, saying, "Do not murmur among yourselves." 44 "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day."

COMMENT:

Jeremiah 31:3 The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying, "I have loved you with an everlasting love, and I have drawn you with lovingkindness."

45 "The prophets wrote, 'They shall be taught of God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me."

COMMENT:

Isaiah 54:13 "All your sons will be taught by the LORD, and their peace will be great."

46 "No one has seen the Father except the One who is from God." 47 "And I tell you the truth, the one who believes has eternal life." 48 "I am the bread of life." 49 "Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness and they died." 50 "I am offering the bread from heaven that will keep you alive." 51 "I am living bread from heaven. Anyone eating this bread will live forever. I will give My flesh for the life of the world."

COMMENT: Jesus gave His flesh, not for food but as a sacrifice to pay for our sins.

52 The Jews began arguing among themselves, "How can this man give us His flesh to eat?" 53 So Jesus said to them, "The truth is, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves."

COMMENT: To eat His flesh and drink His blood is to appropriate His sacrifice in our behalf. When we eat, the food becomes part of us. When we eat Jesus body and drink His blood, we are making Him a part of us, and receive His strength.

54 "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life. I will raise him up on the last day."

COMMENT: Jesus was always quoting scripture. The scribes and Pharisees should have recognized this.

Psalms 22:26 The afflicted will eat and be satisfied, Those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever!

55 "My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink."

COMMENT:

Psalms 4:7 You have put gladness in my heart which is worth more than abundant grain and new wine.

56 "By eating my flesh and drinking My blood a person abides in Me and I in Him."

COMMENT: Eating His flesh and drinking His blood means that He becomes a part of us. He lives in us.

Lamentations 3:24 My soul says, "The LORD is my portion. I have hope in Him."

57 "As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of Him, so the one who eats Me will live because of Me." 58 "This is the bread which came down from heaven. It is not like the bread the fathers ate and died. He who eats this bread will live forever."

COMMENT:

Deuteronomy 32:40 "Indeed, I lift My hand to heaven, and say, as I live forever,"

Psalms 22:26 The afflicted will eat and be satisfied, Those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever!

59 He taught these things in the synagogue in Capernaum.

60 After hearing this, many of His disciples said, "This is too difficult to accept."

COMMENT: In other words, it was hard for them to understand. Some things that Jesus said need to be accepted in order to come to an understanding.

61 Jesus was aware of their grumbling and said, "Does this cause you to stumble?" 62 "What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where He came from?"

COMMENT: The implication is that they could not accept the plainest evidence.

63 "It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken are spirit and life."

64 "Some of you do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning who did not believe and who would betray Him.

COMMENT: Jesus recognized the Judas was struggling with who He was and how He could possibly be the Messiah.

65 "This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by the Father." 66 After this many of His disciples did not follow Him any more.

COMMENT: God allows times of testing to reveal those who are really His.

67 So Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you want to leave Me, too?" 68 Simon Peter answered, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life."

COMMENT: We can say with Peter:

Psalms 73:25 Whom do I have in heaven but You? I desire nothing more on earth.

69 "We have come to understand that You are the Holy One of God." 70 Jesus then said, "Even though I chose each of you, one of you is of the devil." 71 He was speaking of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, because he was going to betray Him.

COMMENT:

Psalms 41:9 Even my close friend whom I trusted has lifted his heel against me.

1 After this Jesus stayed in the region of Galilee. He was not willing to go to Judea because they wanted to kill Him.

COMMENT: Jesus did everything according to His Father's plan for Him. Everything was to happen according to the feasts and scripture so that everyone would be without excuse for not believing that He was who He said He was. Everything we do should be according to God's plan for us. We also have guidance from scripture as well as direction from God's Spirit.

2 The Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was not far off,

COMMENT: This marked the beginning of a new agriculture year. They constructed booths to sleep under in memory of their reliance on God to provide shelter in the wilderness.

Exodus 23:16 "Also you shall observe the Feast of Harvest of the first fruits of what you have sown in the field. And finally the Feast of the Ingathering which comes at the end of the year after you have gathered your crops."

3 and His brothers encouraged Him to go down to Judea so that His disciples would be able to see His works. 4 They said, "You can't be well known if you hide from people." 5 Even His brothers did not believe in Him. 6 Jesus said to them, "Its is not the right time for Me, but, it's always the right time for you."

COMMENT: This is basically the same answer He gave His mother when she asked Him to do something because the wine had run out. The timing for most everything about His life was mapped out by His Father and He was going to wait until His Father gave His go ahead.

7 "The world cannot hate you but it does hate Me because I point out its evil deeds."

COMMENT: He did not make a habit of pointing out people's short comings. But His pure life was in such contrast to the lives of others so that it sometimes made them uncomfortable. And He did point out the errors of the leaders that they might repent. And many of them did, especially after His resurrection.

8 "You go to the feast. I am not going right now because My time has not yet come." 9 So He stayed in Galilee. 10 After Jesus' bothers had gone up to the feast He went up secretly.

11 At the feast the Jews were watching for Jesus. 12 Many of the people grumbled among themselves concerning Him. Some were saying, "He is a good man." Others answered, "No, He is leading people astray." 13 But no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jewish leaders.

14 In the middle of the feast, Jesus went into the temple and began to teach. 15 The Jewish leaders marveled saying, "How has this man learn so much without attending our schools?"

COMMENT: It seems that they did not recognize Him as the one they had been watching for. They knew this Man had not attended their schools. After all, they thought, the only way a person could know the scriptures was to be taught by them.

16 Jesus answered by saying, "My teaching is not actually Mine, but His who sent Me." 17 "Those willing to do His will know whether My teaching is of God or if I speak on My own."

COMMENT: So when you recognize what someone says to be truth, you recognize it through your knowledge of the Bible and the Holy Spirit's enlightenment. All truth is in the Bible if we are willing to search for it and pray for the Spirit's teaching.

Psalms 143:10 Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God. Your Spirit is good and leads me in uprightness.

Psalms 25:9 He leads the humble in justice, teaching them His way.

Psalms 25:14 The covenant of the LORD is for those who fear Him.

1 Corinthians 2:14 The natural man does not accept the teaching of the Spirit of God. They are foolishness to him and he cannot understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ fill you with wisdom. Teach and admonish each other with Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with the grace of the LORD in your hearts.

18 "A person speaking from himself seeks his own glory. But a person who is looking for the glory of the One who sent Him, is true and righteous." 19 "Moses gave you the law. Yet you do not follow it. If you did you would not be trying to kill Me."

COMMENT: The Jewish leaders were constantly accusing Jesus of breaking Moses' law. In the first place it was God's law, not Moses' law. And in the second place, the law as Moses wrote it down, condemned the way they were trying to get rid of Jesus.

20 The crowd said, "You have a demon. No one is trying to kill You." 21 Jesus replied, "I did one good deed and you all marveled."

COMMENT: Jesus had healed on the Sabbath.

22 "Moses gave you circumcision, though it was first given to Abraham."And you know that you can circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 "If the law requires circumcision on the Sabbath, why be angry with Me for making a man well on the Sabbath?"

COMMENT: God specified when circumcision was to take place, irregardless of the day of the week.

Leviticus 12:3 "On the eighth day his foreskin shall be circumcised."

24 "Your judgment should be based on righteousness instead of appearance." 25 Some of the people in Jerusalem were saying, "Isn't this the man they want to kill?" 26 "Yet He speaks publicly and no one apprehends Him. Might the rulers think this Man is the Christ?" 27 "But we know where this man is from. No one will know where the Christ comes from."

COMMENT: Why did the people take this attitude about knowing where Jesus was from? Was it because the thought He was a Galilean. Were the leaders fostering this doubt? It must not have been generally known that He had been born in Bethlehem. It almost sounds like they figured that no one would know where the Messiah came from, like He would suddenly appear full grown. Even the leaders seemed not to know the prophesies concerning the Messiah. We are in danger of making similar mistakes just before Jesus comes if we do not know the Bible prophesies.

28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, saying, "You know Me and where I am from. I have not come on My own accord. He who sent me is true but you do not know Him." 29 "I know Him because I was sent from Him." 30 They wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

COMMENT: Once again we see that there was a plan that God did not deviate from. Jesus would not die for the people until the right time. It would follow the prophecy in Daniel and coincide with the feasts.

31 Many in the crowd believed in Him, saying, "When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs that this Man has?" 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring such things about Jesus and sent officers to seize Him. 33 Because of this Jesus said, "I am with you just a little longer. Then I will go to the One who sent Me." 34 "You will look for Me but you will not find Me. Where I am going you cannot come." 35 The Jews said to each other, "Where does He intend to go that we cannot find Him? Will He go teach the Dispersion among the Greeks?" 36 "What about the idea that we will look for Him and not find Him because we will not be able to go where He is?" 37 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink." 38 "As the scripture says, he who believes in Me will have rivers of living water flow from his innermost being."

COMMENT:

Isaiah 44:3 "For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and provide streams on the dry ground. I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants."

Isaiah 55:1 "Come, everyone who is thirsty. Come to the waters, you who have no money. Come, buy and eat! Yes, come, buy wine and milk without cost."

Isaiah 58:11 "The LORD will be your guide at all times, satisfying your needs in a sun scorched land, and you will be strengthened. You will be like a well watered garden, and like a spring whose waters never fail."

39 He was speaking of the Spirit whom those who believed would receive. The Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

COMMENT: The Spirit was poured out on the believers at Pentecost. Pentecost came ten days after Jesus ascended to heaven and fifty days after the crucifixion. The Holy Spirit was poured out only after Jesus inauguration in heaven.

40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is certainly the Prophet." 41 And others said, "This is the Christ." But still others said, "Surely the Christ will not come from Galilee, will He?"

COMMENT: Actually, Jesus was born in Bethlehem but grew up in Nazareth of Galilee.

42 "Don't the scriptures say that the Christ comes from the line of David and Bethlehem where David was born?"

COMMENT:

Micah 5:2 But as for you, Bethlehem Ephratah, you are too small to be among the clans of Judah. Yet from you I will send One forth to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from of old, from the days of eternity past.

43 The crowd was divided as to what they thought about Him. 44 Some wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him. 45 When the officers who had been sent by the Pharisees to get Jesus came back without Him, they were asked, "Why didn't you bring Him back?" 46 The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this Man."

COMMENT: I would love to have listened to those words. And I may read of them in the gospel account. I should be pouring over the gospels, Revelation and Paul's commentary on what Jesus has done for us.

47 The Pharisees said, "Have you also been led astray?" 48 "None of the rulers or Pharisees have believed in Him."

COMMENT: They were evidently not aware of Nicodemus or Joseph of Arimathaea.

49 "None but this accursed crowd that does not know the law." 50 Nicodemus, who had come to Jesus in the evening said, 51 "Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him out?" 52 They answered him, "Are you from Galilee? Look in the scripture. You will find that no prophet has ever come from Galilee."

COMMENT: Their hate for Jesus short circuited their ability to think rationally.

53 After this everyone went home.

1 Jesus went to the Mount of Olives, 2 and early the following morning He returned to the temple. All the people were coming to Him as He sat down and began to teach.

3 The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery and placed her in the middle of the court.

COMMENT: Things were peaceful until the Pharisees showed up.

4 They said, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery." 5 "The law of Moses instructs us to stone such women. What do You say?"

COMMENT: It must have seemed to them that Jesus could not escape their trap. They were experts at making their accused back peddle to save themselves. And thought they surely had Him now.

6 The Pharisees were looking for some grounds on which to accuse Him. Jesus stooped down and began to write with His finger in the dust of the temple pavement.

COMMENT: Jesus seems never to be caught by surprise. Remember, He always followed His Father's plan. He could not be caught by surprise, for each day had a plan and He was aware of whatever the Spirit planned for Him to do.

7 They continued pressing Him with their question. Straightening up, He said, "Whoever among you is without sin may throw the first stone."

COMMENT: In this case Jesus did not recommend stoning. He did say that stoning is to be carried out by those who have not committed the sin they claim to be eradicating.

8 Then He stooped down and continued writing on the ground. 9 After hearing His answer they were convicted by their own conscience, and one by one they left, the older leaving first followed by the younger. He was left alone with the woman in the middle of the court.

COMMENT: A wisdom beyond Solomon's had dealt with what the Pharisees were sure was an impossible problem for Jesus to sort out. How puny is our understanding. We present a problem to the Lord, thinking that it is too big even for Him, not knowing that He has a thousand ways to deal with any problem we can bring.

10 Straightening up and seeing that her accusers were all gone, Jesus said to her, "Where are those who accused you? Does anyone condemn you?" 11 She said, "No one, Lord." Then Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more."

COMMENT: What a relief. This turned out infinitely better than she could have imagined.

12 Jesus continued teaching, saying, "I am the light of the world. Those who follow Me will not walk in darkness, but have the Light of life."

COMMENT: We have just seen a demonstration of the Light in action. While sin is not condoned, neither is condemnation the goal. We must follow after Jesus leaving our sinful practices behind us.

Daniel 2:22 "He reveals that which is profound and hidden. Nothing is too dark for Him, for the light dwells with Him."

13 The Pharisees said, "You are testifying about Yourself. Your testimony is not true." 14 Jesus said, "Even if I do testify about Myself, My testimony is true. I know where I came from and where am going. You do not know where I am going." 15 "You judge according to the flesh while I judge no one." 16 "But if I were to judge, it would be true judgment. And I am not alone in My judgment. My Father is with Me." 17 "Even in your law it says that the testimony of two men is to be trusted." 18 "I testify about Myself and My Father who sent Me also testifies of Me." 19 So they asked Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesus answered, "You do not know Me or My Father. If you knew Me, you would know My Father."

COMMENT: Could they have known Jesus and His Father? Yes, if they had known and believed the scriptures.

Mark 12:24 Jesus said to them, "You are mistaken in your ideas because you do not know scripture or the power of God."

20 He spoke these words in the treasury as He taught in the temple. None laid hands on Him because His hour had not yet come.

21 Jesus continued, saying, "I am going away. You will seek Me and die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot follow." 22 The Jews were saying to themselves, "Surely He is not planning to kill Himself?" 23 Jesus then said, "You are from below. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world." 24 "This is why I have said you will die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins."

25 Then they asked, "Who are You?" Jesus said, "I am who I have claimed to be from the beginning." 26 "I have many things to speak and judge concerning you. And He who sent Me is true and I say only those things I hear from Him."

COMMENT: Once again we see evidence that His Father is intricately involved with the plan of salvation.

27 They did not understand that He was talking about His Father.

COMMENT: They did not understand because they were not willing to understand. Their minds were made up and even the Spirit of God could not change their unwilling minds.

28 So Jesus said, "When you lift up the son of Man, you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own initiative. I speak only those things the Father has taught Me."

COMMENT: You've heard the expression, "Like Father, like Son." Even at the age of twelve He told His mother, "Didn't you know that I must be about My Father's business?"

Luke 2:48-49 His parents were amazed to see Him there. His mother said to Him, "Son, why have you treated us this way? Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You." [49] And He replied, "Why was it that you searched anywhere else? Didn't you know that I must be about My Father's business?"

29 "And He who sent Me is with Me. I am not alone. I always do what pleases Him."

30 Many believed in Him when He said these things. 31 To those who believed, Jesus said, "If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples." 32 "And you will know the truth and the truth will make you free."

COMMENT: Offering them freedom was something the Jews should have understood. They craved freedom from Rome. Jesus was offering them an even better freedom.

33 They answered, "We are Abraham's children and have never yet been made slaves. How is it that you say we will be free?"

COMMENT: They we too proud to admit that they were in bondage to a foreign power, never mind their enslavement to sin. We too, can forget that sin has a strong hold on us, and we cannot be free from it without Jesus.

34 Jesus said, "The truth is, anyone who sins is a slave to sin." 35 "And the slave cannot be sure how long he will remain in the house. But the son will always be in the house." 36 "If the Son makes you free, then you will be free indeed."

COMMENT: The son of the householder can give a slave his freedom.

37 "I know that you descended from Abraham. Yet you seek to kill Me because you will not listen to what I say." 38 "I speak those things I have seen in My Father's presence. And you do the things you've heard from your father." 39 They said, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do what Abraham did." 40 "But instead, you are planning to kill Me because I told you the truth I heard from God. Abraham would not do this." 41 "You are doing the deeds of your father." They said to him, "We were not born of fornication. We have one Father, God."

COMMENT: This was a reference to the fact that Mary was pregnant with Jesus before she was married to Joseph. They knew some things about His origin, but they didn't seem to understand that He was of the line of David, or that He had been born in Bethlehem.

42 Jesus said, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came from Him. I did not come on My own but was sent by Him." 43 "You cannot understand what I say because you cannot bear to hear it."

COMMENT: Too often people believe what they want to believe.

44 "You are of your father the devil, for you want the same thing he wants. He was a murderer from the beginning and there is no truth in him. He speaks only lies. This is his very nature, for he is the father of lies."

COMMENT: The Pharisees understood that Jesus knew of their intent to kill Him.

45 "I am speaking the truth, but you do not believe Me." 46 "Which one of you can point out where I am wrong? And if I am right, why don't you believe Me?" 47 "He who is of God hears His words. But you do not hear them because you are not of God."

COMMENT: Could Jesus have talked of His divinity more plainly that this?

48 The Jews replied, "We are speaking the truth when we say that you are a Samaritan and have a devil."

COMMENT: This was the harshest thing they could think of to say to Him.

49 Jesus answered, "I do not have a devil. I honor My Father and you dishonor Me." 50 "But I do not seek My own glory. There is One who seeks it and judges accordingly." 51 "I tell you the truth, the one who keeps My word will never see death."

COMMENT: The death He spoke of was the eternal death.

52 The Jews said to Him, "Now we can see You have a devil. Abraham died and so did the prophets. And You say that the person who keeps Your word will never taste death." 53 "Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died. The prophets also died. Whom do You make yourself out to be?" 54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father that glorifies Me. And He is the one you claim as your Father." 55 "But you do not know Him. I know Him. If I should say otherwise, I would be a liar like you. I do know Him and I keep His word." 56 "Your father, Abraham rejoiced to see My day." 57 The Jews then said, "You are not yet fifty years old. Have you seen Abraham?" 58 Jesus said, "The truth is, before Abraham existed, I Am."

COMMENT: When Jesus said "I AM, " He was saying the same words He spoke to Moses when He told Moses to tell the children of Israel that "I AM" has sent you to lead them out of Egypt. I AM is another way of saying, "I exist because I exist." I did not come from someone else, as created beings do.

59 When He had said this they picked up stones to throw at Him, but He hid himself from them and slipped out of the temple.

COMMENT: It was not His time to die. That would take place during the Passover.

1 As Jesus walked He passed a man who had been blind since his birth. 2 His disciples asked Jesus, "Why was this man born blind? Was it because of his sin or the sin of his parents?"

COMMENT: Certainly the disciples were not suggesting that the man sinned before his birth. Maybe they were questioning whether God made him blind because of the sin he would commit after he was born?

3 Jesus answered, "Neither. He was born blind that the works of God might be displayed in him."

COMMENT: Would it be a comfort for you to understand that your trials can be used by God to display His works in your behalf? Would it be a comfort to consider that your besetting sin is an opportunity to glorify God when He sets you free?

4 "I must do the works of Him who sent Me while it is day. Night is coming when no man can work."

COMMENT: And now Jesus is saying that He is going to display His works in this man. Perhaps the darkness that approaches is the darkness of discouragement that must weigh down on this blind man. Perhaps the darkness He is referring to is Satan's attempt to have total control over everyone's misery.

5 "While I am in the world I am the light of the world."

COMMENT: Is the darkness Jesus refers to here the darkness that comes when Jesus stands up in heaven and says that it is time to rescue those that are His?

Daniel 12:1-2 "At that time Michael shall stand up, the great prince who stands watch over the children of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble such as never has been since there was a nation. And those whose names are written in the book shall be delivered." [2] "Many who sleep in the dust will wake up, some to everlasting life and others to shame and everlasting contempt."

6 Then He spit on the ground and made clay with His saliva which He applied to the man's eyes.

COMMENT: I like to imagine God forming Adam from a bit of clay and His saliva.

Genesis 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground.

7 Then He told the man to go to the pool of Siloam" (which is translated, Sent), and to wash the clay from his eyes. After doing this, he came back seeing."

COMMENT: What pool does Jesus send us to in order to wash and be healed?

2 Kings 5:10 Elisha sent a messenger to him saying, "Go wash in the Jordan River seven times and your flesh will be restored and you will be clean."

8 His neighbors and others who knew him as a beggar, said, "Isn't this the man who used to sit and beg?"

COMMENT: You would think people would have had no difficulty recognizing the man. But such a change had come over him they were unsure it was actually him. That can happen to you and me when God works His change in us.

9 Not everyone agreed but the man himself kept saying, "I am the one."

COMMENT: Others may witness to our change after being with Jesus. And we too are to be a witness to this change.

10 So they asked him, "How were your eyes opened?" 11 He said, "The man they call Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes. Then He told me to go wash in the pool of Siloam. When I did this I received my sight."

COMMENT: This is a spectacular miracle, but it went against what they understood to be proper Sabbath behavior. If their hands became soiled, weren't they allowed to wash them? Didn't they have rules about washing before eating? Or was the problem for them that Jesus healed the man on the Sabbath?

12 They asked him, "Where is the one who healed you?" The man said, "I do not know." 13 They then took the man to the Pharisees. 14 Jesus had made the clay and opened the man's eyes on the Sabbath. 15 The Pharisees asked him, "How did you regained your sight." He told them, "A man put clay on my eyes and I washed and now I can see." 16 "Because if this, " some of the Pharisees said, "This man cannot be from God because he does not keep the Sabbath." But others said, "How can a sinner perform such a sign?" So there was a division of opinion among them. 17 They again asked the man who had been blind, "What can you say about the man who opened your eyes?" He answered, "He is a prophet."

COMMENT: What did they expect him to say? Was he supposed to parrot their ideas about Sabbath observance? Here was a man who had always been blind and now he looked at all the wonder around him, seeing what he had always longed to see. He wanted to tell everyone about the change he was experiencing and they wanted him to say that the Sabbath had been broken. Here is a clear case of mistaken piety on the part of the Pharisees. Sometimes we, too, miss the point and major in minors.

18 The Jews could not believe that this man had actually been blind and had then been given his sight. They called his parents, 19 and asked them, "Is this your son? Was he born blind? How is it that he able to now see?" 20 His parents said, "Yes, this is our son and he was born blind." 21 "But we do not know how he is now able to see. He is of age. Let him speak for himself."

COMMENT: The wonder of sight given to their formerly blind son did not matter to them when compared to their desire to remain in the synagogue. Such are our own deformed needs.

22 They feared being put out of the synagogue if they should say the wrong thing. 23 This is the reason they answered as they did."

"

COMMENT: How amazing. They placed more value on being allowed to be part of the synagogue then they did on their son's sight. However misguided their worship, they placed a high value on it believing that their salvation came from being part of the synagogue. Or maybe they just didn't want to be excluded from the community.

24 Speaking to the man who had been blind the leaders said, "Give all the glory to God for we know the man who healed you is a sinner." 25 He answered them, saying, "I do not know if He is a sinner. But I do know that I was blind and now I see." 26 So they asked again, "What did He do to open your eyes?" 27 He replied, "I already told you and you do not listen. Why do you keep asking? Do you want to become His disciples?"

COMMENT: Why does this man reply with what must be considered sarcasm?

28 At this remark they reviled him, saying, "You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses."

COMMENT: They seemed to be claiming to keep the Sabbath according to Moses specifications. In fact the way they tried to keep Sabbath was based on their man made laws.

29 "We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this man came from."

COMMENT: How blind, not to recognize such a miracle being from God. The common people believed when they saw such a sign.

John 7:31 Many in the crowd believed in Him, saying, "When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs that this Man has?"

30 The man answered them, saying, "You are amazing. You do not know where He came from, yet He opened my eyes." 31 We know that God does not hear sinners, but He does hear those who fear Him and do His will.

COMMENT: Either this man is a born preacher, or the Holy Spirit is taking over. Every preacher should pray for the Holy Spirit to take over in this way.

32 "Since the beginning of time no one has ever heard of a man being made to see who was born blind." 33 "If this man were not from God He could not have done this."

COMMENT: Amen!

34 They answered him saying, "You were born blind and entirely in sins and you think to teach us?" So they put him out of the synagogue.

COMMENT: The Pharisees could not accept the plain truth, especially from someone they considered to be so completely beneath them.

35 Jesus heard that they had put the man out and went to find him. He said to the man, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" 36 The man said, "Who is He, Lord, so that I may believe." 37 Jesus said, "You are talking to Him. I am He." 38 The man then said, "Lord, I believe." And he worshiped Him.

39 Jesus said, "I came into the world for judgment so that those who do not see may see and those who do see may become blind." 40 There were Pharisees there who heard Him say this. They said to Him, "We are not blind, are we?"

COMMENT: The Pharisees certainly understood Jesus plain words of warning.

41 Jesus replied, "If you were blind you would have no sin. But since you say you see, your sin remains."

1 "The truth is, the one who enters the sheepfold by any way other than the door is a thief."

COMMENT: The Pharisees were promoting salvation by their own laws. They failed to recognize God's solution for sin. Jesus pointed out that there is only one way to be saved and they must recognize it or be lost.

2 "The shepherd of the sheep enters through the door." 3 "The door keeper opens the door for him. The sheep know his voice. He calls his sheep by name and leads them out." 4 "He does not send them out on their own but with His own voice He bids them to follow Him." 5 "They will not follow a stranger, for they do not know his voice, but run from him." 6 Jesus used this parable but they did not understand its meaning.

7 So Jesus explained it again. He said, "The truth is, I am the door for the sheep." 8 "All who came before Me were thieves and the sheep did not hear them." 9 "I am the door and those who enter through Me will be saved and have pasture."

COMMENT: All good comes through Christ.

10 "The thief comes to steal and destroy. I have come that they may have an abundant life."

COMMENT: What God commands promotes happiness and fulfillment.

11 "I am the good shepherd for I lay down My life for the sheep." 12 "A hireling will run away when he sees the wolf. Then the wolf snatches some of the sheep and scatters the rest." 13 "The hireling is not really looking out for the sheep."

14 "I am the good shepherd. I know My own and they know Me," 15 "just as Father knows Me and I know Him. I lay down My life for the sheep." 16 "I have sheep that are not in this fold. I must bring them in, too. They will hear My voice and be part of the flock which has only one shepherd."

COMMENT: One Shepherd and one flock, but more than one culture or people group.

17 "This is why the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life, that I may take it up again." 18 "No one forces Me to do this. I do it on My own initiative. I have the authority to lay it down and to take it up again. I have received this command from My Father."

COMMENT: Jesus plainly talked about His death and resurrection. His disciples might have understood, but somehow it was too great a leap from their preconceived notions about the Messiah.

19 These sayings caused a division among the Jews. 20 Many said, "He has a demon. He is insane. Why listen to Him?" 21 But others said, "These are not the sayings of someone with a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"

22 This was the time of the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem. It was winter. 23 Jesus was walking in the temple in Solomon's portico. 24 The Jews gathered around Him and asked Him, "How long will You keep us in suspense? Tell us plainly if You are the Christ." 25 Jesus replied, "I have told you and you do not believe. The things I do speak for Me." 26 "You do not believe because you are not of My sheep." 27 "My sheep hear My voice. I know them and they follow Me." 28 "I give them eternal life and no one will snatch them from Me." 29 "My Father has given them to me. He is greater than all, so no one can take them out of His hand." 30 "And I am one with My Father." 31 When He said this, the Jews picked up stones to stone Him.

COMMENT: They ask Him to speak plainly and yet when He did, they tried to stone Him. So they were just baiting Him because they wanted an excuse to kill Him?

32 As they stood ready to stone Him, Jesus said, "I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these are you stoning me?"

COMMENT: Evidently they listened to Him with stones in their hands.

33 They said, "We are not stoning You for a good work, but for making Yourself equal with God when you are only a man." 34 Jesus said, "Haven't you read in the law. 'I said, You are gods.'."

COMMENT: Jesus quoted from Psalms.

Psalms 82:6 I said, "You are gods, and sons of the Most High."

35 "If He called them gods, and His word cannot be broken," 36 "do you then say of the One He sanctified and sent that He blasphemes because He said, 'I am the Son of God?'" 37 "If My works are not the works of My Father, then do not believe Me." 38 "But if I do His works, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works and understand that it is the Father doing these works through Me." 39 At this moment they tried to seize Him, but He eluded their grasp.

COMMENT: It was not yet time for Him to lay down His life. That must happen at the appointed Passover, as predicted in prophecy.

40 Jesus went beyond the Jordan and stayed at the place where John had first baptized. 41 Many came to him, saying, "John performed no signs, but everything he said about this man has been true." 42 And many in that place believed in Him.

1 Lazarus lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. He became sick. 2 This was the same Mary who would later anoint the LORD with ointment and wipe His feet with her hair. 3 When their brother became sick they sent a message to Jesus saying, "Lord, the one You love is sick." 4 When Jesus got the message, He said, "This sickness will not end in death, but is meant to glorify God and His Son." 5 Jesus loved Martha and Mary, and their brother Lazarus.

6 After receiving the message about Lazarus, He remained where He was for two more days. 7 Then He said, "Let's go to Judea." 8 His disciples said, "Master, the Jews have been trying to stone you. Is it wise to go there now?"

COMMENT: His disciples still did not yet understand that Jesus always and only did as His father directed day by day.

9 Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? While a person walks in the light he does not stumble because he sees the Light of the world." 10 "But if a man walks during the night he stumbles because the light is not in him."

COMMENT: What did Jesus mean by walking in the light and not stumbling in relation to the Jews wanting to stone Him? Did He mean that the Father was telling Him what to do and when to do it and therefore, He was walking in the light? Or, more likely, was He saying that those who wanted to stone Him did not see Him as the light of the world, and were not walking in the light He was providing. Their time was running out.

11 Then He said to them, "Our friend Lazarus is sleeping. I am going wake him up." 12 His disciples said, "If he is sleeping surely he is getting better." 13 However, Jesus was speaking of Lazarus' death instead of regular sleep. 14 So Jesus spoke plainly and said, "Lazarus is dead."

COMMENT: So Jesus did not always speak plainly? Why? What advantage to His disciples was figurative language? Don't we all like to say things in a way that caused people to have an 'Ah Ha!' Moment? Does this help us to remember some things longer?

15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there so that you may believe. Let us be going.

COMMENT: So, although the disciples continued to follow Him, and often expressed their belief that He was the Messiah, Jesus knew that the time was not far off when their belief in Him would be severely tested.

16 Then Thomas, who is called the twin, said to the other disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with Him." 17 When Jesus arrived, Lazarus had been in the tomb four days.

18 Bethany was about two miles from Jerusalem. 19 After their brother's death, many of the Jews had come to console Martha and Mary. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went out to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, "If You had been here my brother would not have died." 22 "But I know that even now, whatever You ask of God He will give You."

COMMENT: Whatever else you may say about Martha, she had an abiding faith in Jesus.

23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." 24 Martha replied, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection of the last day."

COMMENT: There is something about believing in something you think is a long way off when compared to having the same trust right now. Jesus had raised others, though not after they had been dead for four days.

Luke 7:11-15 After this Jesus went to a city called Nain. His disciples went with Him, accompanied by a large crowd. [12] As He was approaching the city gate, a dead man was being carried out. He had been the only son of his widowed mother. A sizeable crowd was with her. [13] When the LORD saw her He felt compassion for her and said to her, "Do not weep." [14] As He came to the coffin, the procession halted and Jesus then said, "Young man, I say to you, 'Arise!'" [15] The dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus presented him to his mother.

Mark 5:35-42 While He was speaking with the woman, news arrived from the synagogue official's house. The little girl had died. They said, "Why bother the Teacher anymore?" [36] Jesus overheard the conversation and said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid. Only believe." [37] He allowed no one to go with Him except Peter, James and his brother John. [38] Coming to the synagogue official's house, they heard a great commotion. People were loudly weeping and wailing. [39] Entering into the house, Jesus said, "The child has not died. She is asleep." [40] Those who had come to mourn laughed with scorn when He said this. Jesus then insisted that they all leave the house. He took only the child's parents and His own companions into the room where the child lay. [41] Taking the child's hand, He said to her, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!" [42] Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. Those watching were astonished.

Daniel 12:2 "Many who sleep in the dust will wake up, some to everlasting life and others to shame and everlasting contempt."

25 Jesus said to her, "I am the Resurrection and the Life. He who believes in Me will live even if he dies." 26 "Whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?"

COMMENT: This means that you and I may have solid assurance that eternal life is ours. Believing in Jesus as God's Son is the key to this promise.

27 "Yes, Lord, " she said, "i believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, the One Who has come from heaven to our world."

COMMENT: She has said it all.

28 After saying this she went quietly to call Mary, and tell her that the Master had come and wanted to see her. 29 When she heard this, Mary quickly went out to meet Jesus, 30 for He had not yet come to the village but had remained where He had talked with Martha. 31 Some of the Jews who were visiting saw Mary get up, so they followed her, thinking that she was going to the grave to weep.

32 When Mary came to Jesus, she fell at His feet, saying, "Lord if You had been here my brother would not have died." 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had followed her also weeping, He was deeply moved in Spirit and troubled.

COMMENT: Jesus was troubled at the plight of humankind and especially for Martha and Mary and their unhappiness. And Lazarus was loved by many others who had little hope.

34 He asked, "Where have you laid him?" They said, "Come and see Lord." 35 Jesus wept.

COMMENT: Jesus did not weep for Himself, but for the hopelessness exhibited by the Jews.

36 The Jews were saying, "See how much He loved him!" 37 But some of them said, "Could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind have kept this man from dying?"

COMMENT: God must become weary with those of us who always seem to think we know how the story should have been written.

38 Jesus groaned within himself again as He came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone lying against its opening.

COMMENT: Jesus must have been longing for the day when He would call every saint from his grave and take them all to heaven.

39 Jesus asked them to take the stone away. Martha protested saying, "The smell will be bad because he has been dead four days." 40 Jesus said to her, "Didn't I say that if you believe you will see the glory of God?"

COMMENT: One of God's glories is to give life and especially to restore life.

41 The stone was removed and Jesus lifted up His eyes, and said, "Father I thank You that You have heard Me." 42 "I know that You always hear Me. But because of the people standing here, I have said this so that they may believe that You sent Me."

COMMENT: In other words, Jesus wanted the people to witness his close dependance on His Father. Those who wanted to believe were given every evidence of who Jesus was mere days before he would be rejected and condemned by the leaders and most of His followers would be without hope.

43 Then He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth."

COMMENT: Did Lazarus need for Jesus to call out to him loudly? I do not think so. I think Jesus did this for the bystanders. And it harked forward to the time when He comes back a second time and calls the righteous dead to life. It will be a mighty and triumphant shout.

1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the LORD Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and the trumpet of God, and those who died having placed their trust in Christ, shall rise first.

44 And he that was dead came out. He was bound hand foot with wrappings, including his face. Jesus said, "Take the wrappings off."

COMMENT: No one shrank from touching the grave clothes which would have been tainted with the decomposing body. Here is an example of the Life Giver making all things new.

Revelation 21:5 And He who sits on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." And he said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful."

45 Many of the Jews which had followed Mary, saw what Jesus had done and believed in Him.

COMMENT: I wonder who would not believe that Jesus was the Son of God after seeing Him raise Lazarus to life?

46 But some went to the Pharisees told them what had happened.

COMMENT: What must their heart condition have been? Were they taking evidence to the Pharisees that they hoped would change their minds? Or were they just wondering how anyone could deny Jesus claim to be the Son of God? Or were they hoping for some sort of personal gain?

47 The chief priests and the Pharisees called a counsel."What can we do?" They asked each other."This man is performing many signs."

COMMENT: They had asked Jesus for a sign. They now recognized that He had performed many signs. Persistence in unbelief can only have one end.

John 6:30 So they asked Jesus, "What sign will You do that we may see and believe You are Who You say You are?"

48 "If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him and the Romans will come and take away our authority and destroy our nation."

COMMENT: They were more worried about the Romans than they were about God. Such is the sure result of resisting God.

49 One of them named Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year, said, "You know nothing at all." 50 "You are not considering that it is expedient for us that one man die for the people so that the whole nation does not perish." 51 He did not say this from his own understanding, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation. 52 And not for the nation only, but in order that He might gather together into one group the children of God scattered abroad. 53 From that day on they continued to plan what would be the best way to put Him to death.

COMMENT: They did not recognize that they were planning the death of the Passover Lamb.

Revelation 13:8 All who dwell on the earth will worship the beast if their names are not written in the Lamb's book of life, who was slain from the foundation of the world.

54 For this reason Jesus no longer moved publicly among the Jews. He went with His disciples to the city of Ephraim which was near the wilderness. 55 The time of Passover was near, and many went up to Jerusalem early to purify themselves. 56 People were looking for Jesus. Among themselves they were saying, "Do you think He will come to the feast this year?" 57 Both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, they were to report it so that they might seized Him.

1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom He had raised from the dead. 2 They made a supper for Jesus. Martha was serving while Lazarus reclined at the table with Jesus and the others guests. 3 Mary took a very costly perfume made of pure nard and anointed Jesus feet. Then she wiped His feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples who was planning to betray Him, said, 5 "Why wasn't this ointment sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" 6 He did not say this out of consideration for the poor, but because he was a thief. He carried the money bag and he used to pilfer what was in it.

COMMENT: This is the worst sort of hypocrisy, hoping to personally gain from advice given. Judas witnessed Jesus power to know the thoughts of people, and yet he thought he was hiding what he was doing from Jesus. This is hard to understand unless we remember that we need the Holy Spirit the think clearly about such things. Like us, he was fooling himself.

7 Jesus said, "Let her alone. She had planned to use this for My burial." 8 "You will always have the poor with you but you will not always have Me."

COMMENT: The same can be said for us as we consider giving a gift to God. We may not always have the same opportunity we have today.

9 Many people had come to see Jesus who was eating with Lazarus. They also wanted to see Lazarus, whom Jesus had raised form the dead. 10 The chief priests were planning to put Lazarus to death as well.

COMMENT: They must have hoped that people would forget about the miracle of Lazarus being raised from the dead if he was no longer living.

11 Since he had been raised from the dead, many of the Jews were leaving and believing in Jesus.

COMMENT: The Pharisees were watching their influence being eroded.

12 On the next day a large crowd was coming to the Passover feast. They heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 Taking palm branches they went out to meet Him. They began shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is the King of Israel who comes in the name of the LORD."

COMMENT:

Psalms 118:26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD. We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.

14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as the scripture said, 15 "Fear not, daughter of Zion. Your King is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."

COMMENT:

Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you. He is just and endowed with salvation. He is humble, mounted on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

16 At first His disciples did not understand. After Jesus was glorified they remembered that these things were written of Him and they had a part in it.

17 The people who had been present when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead continued to talk about it. 18 This was one of the reasons the people went to meet Him. 19 So the Pharisees said to each other, "No matter what we do, the world will follow Him."

COMMENT:

Psalms 22:27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will worship before You.

20 There were some Greeks coming to worship at the feast. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee and said to him, "We want to see Jesus." 22 Philip told Andrew and then Andrew and Philip came and told Jesus. 23 Jesus said to them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified."

COMMENT: His Father must have told Him that before He died for the world, people outside of Israel would come to Him. Thus He knew that the coming of these men was a timely event.

24 "The truth is, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit."

COMMENT: In order for the church to grow, Jesus must die.

25 "He who loves his life will lose it. And he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternity."

COMMENT: He who loves his life, as though this is all that matters, will not benefit from the gospel. But he who willing gives up this life, will receive many times over what he gave up here.

26 "Anyone who serves Me must follow Me and the Father will honor him."

COMMENT: Following Jesus may mean giving up everything, including this life. When we are young this seems like we are being asked to give up a lot. As we get older, and as life does not seem as good as it did before, as our bodies started falling apart, it may not seem that we are giving up so much.

27 "Now My soul is troubled. Shall I say, Father, 'Save Me from this hour?' But this is the reason I came."

COMMENT: Of course Jesus did not want to die. And the death He faced was far greater than the cross itself. This would be the first time He had ever been separated from His Father. It is hard for us to understand this horror.

Psalms 88:3 For my soul is full of troubles, and I am drawing near the grave.

Isaiah 53:3 "He was despised and forsaken by men. As a Man of sorrows He was acquainted with grief. There were times when esteem for Him was so low men would turn their faces away."

28 "Father, glorify Your name." Then a voice came from heaven saying, "I have glorified it and I will do so again."

COMMENT: Everything Jesus did was for the purpose of glorifying His Father.

29 The voice sounded like thunder to the crowd of people. Some said, "An angel spoke to Him."

COMMENT:

Exodus 19:16 So on the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning and a thick cloud covered the mountain. A very loud trumpet sounded and the people trembled.

30 Jesus said, "The Voice was for your benefit and not Mine." 31 "Judgment is about to come when the ruler of this world will be cast out."

COMMENT: Jesus was referring to His death at the end of that week when Satan's end would be ensured.

32 "And if I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all men to Myself."

COMMENT: This was a reference to the brass serpent Moses put up for the people to look at and be healed.

John 3:14 "Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up."

33 He said this to indicate the kind of death He was to die.

COMMENT: Lifted up is the same as saying to be hung on a cross.

34 The crowd said to Jesus, "We have heard from the law that the Christ is to remain forever. Why do you say the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?" 35 Jesus replied, "For a little longer you will have the Light among you. Walk while you have the Light so that the darkness does not overtake you. If you walk in the dark you do not know where you are going." 36 "While you have the Light, believe in the Light so that you can become sons of Light." After saying these things He hid Himself from them.

COMMENT: Jesus clearly referred to Himself as the light.

John 1:4-5 In Him was life and the life was the Light of men. [5] The Light shines in the darkness but the darkness did not comprehended it.

John 3:19 "A person is condemned after he sees the Light of the world, and because of the evil within him, chooses darkness rather than the Light."

John 3:21 "The one practicing the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be shown to have come from God."

John 8:12 Jesus continued teaching, saying, "I am the light of the world. Those who follow Me will not walk in darkness, but have the Light of life."

John 9:5 "While I am in the world I am the light of the world."

John 11:9 Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? While a person walks in the light he does not stumble because he sees the Light of the world."

37 Though He had performed so many signs, they did not believe in Him.

COMMENT: Evidently they could not bridge the gap between what He said and what they had always been taught, that the Messiah would be a conquering hero. The Man standing before them did not fit their idea of the Messiah. Jesus had come to conquer the Devil and the power of sin. They wanted someone to overcome Rome. And dealing with the sin in one's life is most important thing for anyone.

38 This fulfilled the words of Isaiah, "Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?"

COMMENT:

Isaiah 53:1 "Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?"

Revelation 15:4 "Who will not fear You, O LORD, and glorify Your name? For You are holy. All nations shall come and worship before You, for Your righteous acts have been revealed."

39 Isaiah gave the reason they could not believe. 40 "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so that their eyes will not see or their hearts perceive, that they may be converted and healed."

COMMENT: God gives us every opportunity to see the truth. But like Pharaoh of old, when a person persistently chooses not to believe, God will not force him. In fact, we can only believe truth as the Holy Spirit prepares our minds to see it. If we resist with enough persistence, He will let us go our own way.

Isaiah 6:10 "Render the hearts of this people insensitive, their ears dull, and their eyes dim, lest they see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and return and be healed."

41 Isaiah said this after he saw His glory and spoke to Him.

42 In spite of this, many of the rulers believed in Him. But they feared the Pharisees and would not confess their belief, lest they be put out of the synagogue, 43 for they loved the approval of men more than the approval of God.

COMMENT: Why would anyone chose the approval of men over the approval of God? Probably they would if they had not been walking in the light as it became available. Walking in the light demands more than a casual ascent to truth. It requires a commitment that can be costly.

44 Jesus cried out, "He who believes in Me is actually believing in the One who sent Me."

COMMENT:

John 14:8-10 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and it will be enough for us." [9] Jesus said, "Philip, have I been with you this long and you do not know Me yet? If you have seen Me, then you have seen the Father." [10] "Don't you believe that the Father and I are one? The words I speak are not my own but the Father's who abides in Me."

John 14:31 "In order that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as He has commanded Me. Come now. Let us be going."

45 "If you see Me you have seen the One who sent Me." 46 "I have come as a Light to the world so that whoever believes in Me will not remain in darkness." 47 "I do not judge those who hear My sayings and do not keep them. I did not come to judge the world, but to save."

COMMENT:

John 3:17 "For God did not send His Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world through Him might be saved."

48 "Those who do not receive My words will be judged in the last day by the words I have spoken."

COMMENT: This was a strong warning to the scribes and Pharisees.

49 "I have not spoken on My own initiative. The Father who sent Me has told Me what to say." 50 "I know that His commandment is eternal life. Therefore, I say what the Father tells Me."

COMMENT: Jesus depended on His Father moment by moment. And to do what Jesus expects of us we must follow His example.

1 It was just before the Feast of Passover. Jesus knew that His hour of sacrifice was at hand. Soon He would return to His Father. He had loved His own in this world. He would now show them the full extent of His love. 2 It was supper time and the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had placed everything in His hands. He had come from God and was about to go back to God.

COMMENT: Jesus knew that everything depended on Him fulfilling the responsibility the His Father had placed on Him.

4 Getting up from supper and laying aside His garments, Jesus girded Himself with a towel.

COMMENT: Jesus knew where He had come from and where He would go when He had raised from the dead. He was the Creator of the universe. Yet, He now prepared to perform this lowly service. The things Jesus does for us are not beneath His station. He is always happy to do anything that will make a difference for us.

5 Pouring water into a basin He began to wash the disciple's feet and wipe them with the towel He had wrapped around Himself. 6 When He came to Peter, he said, "Lord, how can You wash my feet?" 7 Jesus answered, "You do not understand what I am doing, but, eventually you will." 8 Peter said, "You shall never wash my feet!" Jesus said, "Unless I wash you, you can have no part with Me."

COMMENT: Jesus said this with love and humility.

9 Peter replied, "Then Lord, wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."

COMMENT: Peter here demonstrates that anyone of us may seriously believe we are one hundred percent loyal and not know how quickly our loyalty may crumble.

10 Jesus replied, "He who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed to be completely clean. You are clean. But this is not true of everyone here."

COMMENT: You have had a bath Peter. That is, you have been baptized. Foot washing is to take care of what has happened since baptism. It should not be ignored. In Judas' case, would foot washing be enough. Foot washing is for the converted Christian, not one in need of baptism, or rebaptism.

11 Jesus knew the one who was betraying Him. This is why He said."Not everyone here is clean."

12 After Jesus had finished washing their feet, He put His garments on again and reclined at the table. He said, "Do you understand what I have done to you?"

COMMENT: Jesus was leaving nothing to chance concerning their understanding that He was the Son of God. He knew that in the next hours their belief in Him would be severely tested.

13 "You call me Master and Lord, and you are right, for so I am." 14 "If I, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you too should wash each other's feet."

COMMENT: This was a new idea to them. A whole other dimension to their understanding.

15 "I have given you an example. Do as I have done." 16 "The truth is, just as a slave is not greater than his master, neither is the one sent greater than the one who sent him."

COMMENT: Jesus is saying, "As the Father sent Me, I am sending you."

17 "Now that you know these things, you are blessed if you do them." 18 "I am not speaking of all of you. I know whom I have chosen. The scripture will be fulfilled that says, 'He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.'"

COMMENT: Jesus is making it very clear that He will not be surprised by Judas' betrayal.

Psalms 41:9 Even my close friend whom I trusted has lifted his heel against me.

19 "I am telling you of this before it happens, so that when it comes to pass, you may believe that I am the Son of God." 20 "I tell you the truth, he who receives the one I send receives Me. And he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."

21 After saying this Jesus became very troubled in spirit and said, "Truly, one of you is going betray Me."

COMMENT: Jesus is not troubled for Himself, but for the one who is selling his soul to Satan.

22 The disciples looked around at each other. Everyone was at a loss to know who He was talking about.

COMMENT: No one suspected Judas. He must have been artful in his deception.

23 The disciple that Jesus loved was reclining on His bosom. 24 Simon Peter gestured to him to find out who Jesus was talking about. 25 So John leaned back on Jesus bosom and asked, "Lord, who is it?" 26 Jesus said, "I will dip this morsel and give it to him." And He gave the morsel to Judas Iscariot.

COMMENT: Evidently Jesus said this quietly to John.

27 After that Satan entered into Judas. And Jesus spoke to him saying, "Quickly do what you are going to do." 28 No one at the table knew why Jesus had said this to Judas. 29 Some thought that because Judas carried the money box he might be going out to buy something for the feast, or to give something to the poor.

COMMENT: Perhaps giving something to the poor was a common practice during this feast.

30 After receiving the morsel, Judas left immediately. It was night.

COMMENT: For Judas it was night in more than one way. But Jesus had singled him out with the morsel. Maybe this seemed like an honor and that Jesus did not suspect him.

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in Him." 32 "If God is glorified in what I do, He will glorify Me right away."

COMMENT: Jesus is glorified by doing the will of His Father.

33 "Little children, I am with you just a little longer. You will look for Me and just as I told the Jews, where I am going you cannot come."

34 "I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you."

COMMENT: It was a new commandment for them because they had not yet been doing this.

35 "This is how all men will know that you are My disciples."

COMMENT: We cannot do this unless we receive a heart change by Jesus.

36 Simon Peter said, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus said, "Although you cannot come with Me right now, you will follow later." 37 Peter said, "Lord, why can't I come with You now? I'll follow you even if it means death." 38 Jesus said, "Will you die for Me? The truth is, you will deny me three times before the rooster crows."

COMMENT: Like Peter, how little we know ourselves.

1 "Do not let your heart be troubled. You believe in God. Believe also in Me."

COMMENT: The world cannot give the assurance our hearts desire. Our belief needs to be centered on God's assurance through His promises. As we remember His promises evidenced in His greatest gift to humanity, we find the hope we so need. The stories of Jesus need to permeate our thinking. We need to search out His will for us that we may learn to think, 'What would Jesus do?'. Jesus said this right after telling Peter of his coming denial.

2 "In My Father's house are many dwellings. You may be sure that I am telling the truth when I say that I am going to prepare a place for you."

COMMENT: We should look to the future when we are feeling down. Jesus has big and wonderful things planned.

3 "And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will return for you so that where I am you can be also." 4 "And you know where I am going." 5 Thomas said, "Lord, we do not know where You are going. How can we know the place You speak of?" 6 Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. The only way to the Father is through Me."

COMMENT: Thomas, you do not need to know anything more than Jesus. Leave the details to Him. His plans for you are hard to comprehend.

7 "If you have known Me then you know the Father. So you know Him and have seen Him."

COMMENT: Jesus and the Father are One. And when Jesus comes He will take us to the Father. It was like when I wanted to know what Dad thought about something. He was often unavailable. But Mother knew what he would say and she was always right.

8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and it will be enough for us." 9 Jesus said, "Philip, have I been with you this long and you do not know Me yet? If you have seen Me, then you have seen the Father."

COMMENT:

Hebrews 1:3 He is the radiance of His Father's glory, an exact representation of His person, upholding all things by the word of His power. After making purification for our sins, He sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high,

10 "Don't you believe that the Father and I are one? The words I speak are not my own but the Father's who abides in Me." 11 "Believe that the Father and I are one, or believe because of the works I do." 12 "I tell you the truth when I say that he who believes in Me and the works I do, will do even greater works after I go to the Father." 13 "Whatever you ask in My name I will do for you. This will glorify the Father." 14 "If you ask anything in My name I will do it."

15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments." 16 "And I will ask the Father and He will give you another Helper to be with you forever." 17 "He is the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him because it does not see or know Him. But you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you." 18 "I will come to you even though I have left this world." 19 "In a little while the world will no longer see Me. But you will. And because I live, you will also live." 20 "In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you will be in Me and I in you."

COMMENT: It is a three way relationship, like two parents and a child. This is security. This makes all the difference. If we really know Jesus, we may also know the Father.

21 "He who knows My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me. The Father loves the one who loves Me, and I will make Myself known to him."

COMMENT: If we know and do what Jesus has commanded, we may be assured that He will reveal Himself to us.

22 Judas, not Iscariot, said, "Lord, how will we see You while the world does not?" 23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves Me he will keep My word, and My Father and I will make Our abode with him." 24 "The one who does not keep My words does not love Me. The words I have spoken are actually the words of My Father who sent Me." 25 "While I have been with you I have spoken of these things." 26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things. And He will help you remember the things I have said to you."

27 "I am leaving you with peace. My peace is not like the world's peace. You do not need to be troubled or afraid."

COMMENT: Jesus said this just before He was about to be killed.

John 14:1 "Do not let your heart be troubled. You believe in God. Believe also in Me."

28 "You have heard Me say that I am going away and will come to you again. If you love Me this will make you happy, because I am going to the Father who is greater than Me." 29 "I have told you this before it happens so that when it happens you will believe." 30 "I cannot speak much longer because the ruler of this world is coming. But he has no power over Me." 31 "In order that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as He has commanded Me. Come now. Let us be going."

1 "I am the true vine, and My Father cares for the vine." 2 "He removes every branch in Me that does not bear fruit. And He prunes the branches that bear fruit so that they may bear even more fruit."

COMMENT: The Father will attend to every branch of the vine, whether it needs to be pruned or removed.

3 "And you have been pruned because of what I have taught you." 4 "But you cannot bear fruit unless you abide in Me and I in you." 5 "I am the vine and you are the branches. Apart from Me you cannot bear fruit."

COMMENT: Jesus said it twice in order to bring home the importance of staying connected to Him.

6 "Those branches that do not abide in Me wither and are cut off. Eventually they will be gathered and burned."

7 "If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, ask what you will and it will be granted to you." 8 "My Father is glorified when you bear much fruit. This is how you remain My disciples."

COMMENT: Our prayers should be related to fruit bearing.

9 "Just as the Father has loved Me, so I have loved you. Abide in My love."

COMMENT: To abide means to accept or bear, to endure without yielding, to bear patiently. And to be loved by Jesus the way the Father loves Him is amazing.

10 "By keeping My commandments you are abiding in My love, the same way I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love."

COMMENT: Here we see what Jesus means by abiding. We do this by doing whatever He asks of us. His commandments are important guidelines that tell us how to behave and how to represent Him.

11 "I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full."

COMMENT: Happiness for us is the result of keeping His commandments.

12 "This is My commandment. Love one another the way I have loved you."

COMMENT: So this is a summary of Jesus commands to us. How did Jesus love us? He was willing to sacrifice everything that we might have eternal life.

13 "No one has greater love than the one who lays down his life for his friends." 14 "And you are My friends if you do what I command you."

COMMENT: It goes both ways. He does everything for us and we do everything He asks of us.

15 "From now on I will not call you servants, for servants do not know what their master is doing. I will call you My friends. Everything My Father tells me, I will then make known to you."

16 "You did not choose Me. I chose you, and appointed you to go and bear fruit that endures. Then whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He will give to you."

COMMENT: Here is a summary of what Jesus has done for us and what the Father will yet do.

17 "My command to you is to love one another."

18 "If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me first."

COMMENT: To be hated for the same reasons Jesus was hated is an honor.

19 "If you were of the world, the world would love you. But I have chosen you and you are not of the world. Therefore it hates you."

COMMENT: To be hated for the reasons Jesus was hated is because we are not of this world. What does it mean to "Not be of this world?" Oh to have none of the world's desires.

20 "Remember what I have told you, a servant is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they value what I have said, they will value what you say." 21 "All these things they will do to you because of Me, for they do not know the One who sent Me." 22 "If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin." 23 "The one who hates Me also hates My Father." 24 "If I had not done the works which no one has ever done, they would not have sin. But after seeing these things, they hate Me and My Father." 25 "What they have done fulfills what was written in their law, 'They hated Me without cause.'"

COMMENT:

Psalms 35:19 Do not let those who are my enemies without cause rejoice over my demise as they wink at each other.

Psalms 69:4 Those who hate me without cause are more than the hairs of my head. They are powerful and want to destroy me. I am being told to restore what I have not stolen.

Psalms 109:3-5 Their words of hatred surround me without. [4] In spite of my love to them, they are my adversaries. But I continue to pray. [5] Thus they have repaid me evil for good.

26 "When the Helper who is the Spirit of truth comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, He will testify of Me." 27 "And you will testify of Me because you have been with Me from the beginning."

1 "I have told you these things so that you will not stumble." 2 "You will be put out of the synagogues and the time will come when those who kill you will think they are doing a service to God." 3 "They will do this because they have not known the Father or Me." 4 "I have told you about this so that when the time comes you will remember that you were warned. I did not tell you about this to begin with because I was here with you." 5 "But now I am going away to Him who sent Me. Why aren't any of you asking Me where I am going?" 6 "Sorrow fills your heart when I say this." 7 "But it is to your advantage that I go away. The Helper will not come until I have gone. After I am gone I will send Him to you." 8 "When He comes He will convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment."

COMMENT: I want the Spirit of Truth to come now and convict the world of sin, righteousness and truth. There have been times when I felt that this is my responsibility. At other times I realize that it is God's responsibility to do this. What then am I to do beyond being true to the principles of His government? I feel I cannot guess at His will concerning my neighbors. He needs to tell me what to do about warning them, since they have made it plain that they are not interested.

9 "He will convict them of their sin in not believing in Me."

COMMENT: Is it a sin to not believe in Jesus, or do we sin in other ways because we do not believe in Him and therefore, do not have His power? Does belief in Jesus give us the moral fiber to choose correctly? When we believe in Jesus He recreates in us a right spirit.

Psalms 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

10 "And concerning righteousness because I go to the Father and you will no longer see Me."

COMMENT: How does this convict of righteousness? Is this because the Holy Spirit convicts us?

11 "He will convict of judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged."

COMMENT: Did the Spirit of God operate differently before Christ's death and the irrefutable proof of Satan's sin?

12 "I have many more things I would like to say to you, but you cannot bear them now."

COMMENT: Probably because they are so distracted by what is about to happen to Jesus.

13 "But when the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will only speak of whatever He hears, and He will show you things yet to come."

COMMENT: So the things they were not ready to hear from Jesus on that evening were later made known to them by the Holy Spirit.

14 "He will glorify Me by disclosing to you what is Mine." 15 "Whatever belongs to the Father belongs to Me and this is what He will disclose to you." 16 "In a little while you will no longer see Me. And then in a little more time you will see Me once more."

COMMENT: One explanation is that in a little while they would no longer see Him. This would happen when Jesus returned to heaven some forty plus days later. A thousand years is as a day for the Lord. Two thousand years is a short time from the Lord's perspective. Looking back it will seem short to us. But most likely Jesus was referring to His coming death when they would believe that He was lost to them forever, and their dreams would be dashed. Then in three days they would see Him alive forever more. What joy that would be!

Psalms 90:4 A thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday past, or like a watch in the night.

17 Some of the disciples said among themselves, "What does He mean when He says that in a little while we will not see Him, and that He is going to the Father?" 18 "We do not know what He is talking about."

19 Jesus knew that they were questioning what He had said and He said to them, "Are you wondering what I mean when I say that in a little while you will not see Me, and then in a little more time you will see Me?" 20 "The truth is, you will weep and lament while the world rejoices. But your grief will turn to joy." 21 "When a woman is in labor, as her hour approaches, she has pain. But when she has given birth she forgets the anguish she experienced because of the joy that her child has been born into the world." 22 "That is how it will be for you. You have grief now, but when I see you again you will rejoice and no one will take away your joy." 23 "In that day your questions will all be answered. The truth is, you will be able to ask the Father for anything in My name, and He will give it to you."

COMMENT: See how Peter asked God to raise Lydia.

Acts 9:40 After sending them out, Peter knelt down and prayed. Then turning to the body, he said, "Tabitha, get up." And she opened her eyes and seeing Peter, she sat up.

24 "Up to now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, in order that your joy may be full."

25 "I have spoken figuratively, but the time is coming when I will speak plainly of the Father." 26 "In that day you will ask in My name and I will not need to ask the Father for you." 27 "For the Father Himself loves you because you have loved Me and have believed that He sent Me." 28 "I came from the Father into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."

29 His disciples said, "Now You are speaking plainly and not using a figure of speech." 30 "Now we know that You know all things and do not need to be questioned by anyone. Because of this we believe that you came from God." 31 Jesus answered, "Do you now believe?" 32 "The hour is almost here when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and I will be left alone. Yet I am not alone for the Father is with Me."

COMMENT: Jesus fully knew why He had come into the world and what the price was that He must pay. He also knew when it was that He must die.

33 "I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation but take courage, I have overcome the world."

1 After Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted His eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son that He may glorify You."

COMMENT: What was Jesus asking of His Father? How was His Father to glorify Him? Not audibly or visually. Was it some sort of assurance for Jesus alone beyond the grave? Was it that Jesus was glorifying His Father by continuing the plan for man's salvation that they had worked out together before they had created the earth? Would it be when Jesus went ahead with the plan to vindicate His Father though He would not be able to see beyond the grave?

2 "Even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, and eternal life to those You have given to Him." 3 "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom You have sent."

COMMENT: The fact that the Father will one day bestow eternal life on those who should have died eternally, were it not for Jesus' sacrifice, makes it possible for you and I to know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom the Father sent to die in our place. And to know Him now is to have the assurance of eternal life in the age to come.

4 "I glorified You on earth, and I have accomplished the work You gave Me to do." 5 "Now, O Father, glorify Me together with You, with the glory I had with You before the world was."

COMMENT: This glorification is the result of going ahead with the plan of salvation they had previously worked out together? His Father would be vindicated and Satan's end would be justified.

6 "I have made Your name known to those whom you gave to Me out of the world. They were Yours and You gave them to Me. And they have kept Your word."

COMMENT: Though they had been in the world, they belonged to the Father before Jesus called them to follow Him. Jesus opened their understanding of His Father and they responded.

7 "And they have come to realize that everything You have given Me came from You." 8 "For the words which You gave Me I have given to them. And they have received them and truly understood that I came forth from You. They have believed that You sent Me."

COMMENT:

Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

9 "I do not pray on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those You gave Me, and who belong to You."

COMMENT: In this instance Jesus did not pray for the unsaved, but for His fledgling church and its future.

10 "All that I have is Yours and all that is Yours is Mine. And I am glorified in them."

COMMENT: How can Jesus be glorified in me, unless I truly believe in Him, by knowing Him and by being known by Him. I do not want the time to ever come for Him to say to me, "Depart from Me. I never knew you." If I practice lawlessness I am presuming on Jesus' sacrifice.

Matthew 7:21-23 "Not everyone who calls Me Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does My Father's will." [22] "In that day many will say to Me, Lord, didn't we prophesy, cast out devils and perform many miracles in Your name?" [23] "But I will answer them, saying, 'Depart from Me. I never knew you, for you practiced lawlessness.'"

11 "Now I am no more in the world, but they are. I am coming to You, Holy Father. And I ask that You keep them in Your name, the name you have given Me, that they may be one, even as we are one."

COMMENT: Except for dying, Jesus work on earth was now finished. But His disciples would need encouragement as they would be calling upon God for their needs and the needs of those they would minister to. And they would continue to learn to work together as a unit.

12 "While I was with them I kept them in Your name. None of them are lost except the son of perdition, so that scripture will be fulfilled."

COMMENT:

Psalms 41:9 Even my close friend whom I trusted has lifted his heel against me.

13 "But now I come to You, and I speak these things in the world that they may have My joy fully in themselves."

COMMENT: This joy is knowing God and that sin's end has been insured.

14 "I have given them Your word. The world hates them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world."

COMMENT:

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God and the Word was God.

John 1:14 The Word was made flesh and lived among us. We saw the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 "I do not ask that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one."

COMMENT: We would like to be spared further difficulties in this sinful world. But God wants us to live with our present difficulties for His own purpose and glory. What a privilege will be ours to have in some small way to have helped vindicate the God of the universe against the false claims of Satan.

16 "They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world."

COMMENT: What does it mean to not be of the world? It cannot mean that they are without sin. It must mean that they have fixed their sights on heaven, and though they are imperfect, they are trusting in Jesus to take their sin upon Himself and strengthen them for obedience so that God may be glorified and Satan's accusations refuted.

17 "Sanctify them in the truth. Your word is truth."

COMMENT: Sanctification is the process of becoming more like God, and His Spirit does this for those who place their trust in Jesus.

18 "As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world." 19 "I sanctify Myself for their sakes so that they may be sanctified in truth."

COMMENT: What does Jesus mean by sanctifying Himself? Isn't this sanctification the setting aside Himself for a specific purpose, and didn't God set the disciples aside for the work He had for them to do? Haven't we also been set aside?

20 "I am not asking for just these, but for all those who will believe through their word."

COMMENT: Because I believe I may claim this promise Jesus made for all those who believe. Truth makes it possible for me to believe.

John 8:32 "And you will know the truth and the truth will make you free."

21 I want them to be one, just as You and I are one, and that they may be one with Us, so the world may believe that You sent Me.

COMMENT: Seeing families and groups of people in total harmony is a powerful witness. Thinking about having been invited to be one with Jesus and the Father is inspiring.

22 "The glory which You gave Me I have given to them, so that they may be one, just as We are one."

COMMENT: What is this glory Jesus has with His Father which He gives to us? It must be God like love.

23 "I in them and You in Me, that they may be in perfect unity, that the world may know that You sent Me, and love them, as you have loved Me."

COMMENT: What is this glory that Jesus gave to them and also to us? Is it glory to be in unity? Is oneness glory?

24 "Father, I desire that those You have given Me may be with Me where I am, and that they may see My glory which You gave to Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world."

COMMENT:

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God and the Word was God.

25 "O Righteous Father, the world has not known You, but I have known You, and these know that You have sent Me."

COMMENT:

John 1:14 The Word was made flesh and lived among us. We saw the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

26 "I have made Your name known to them, and will continue to do so, that the love which You had for Me may be in them, and I in them."

COMMENT: As we make known the love of God to someone, His love will be in them and in us. Love is the foundation of God's government.

1 When Jesus had finished speaking these things, He took His disciples over the Kidron brook to a garden.

2 Judas, who was betraying Him, knew of the place because Jesus often went there with His disciples. 3 Having procured a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, Judas led them to the place with lanterns, torches and weapons.

COMMENT: Judas' actions in doing this seems a little like the actions of Lucifer before he was expelled from heaven. Judas certainly knew that Jesus understood what was in his mind. He understood something of the power Jesus often displayed. Yet he thought to force Jesus' hand. While in heaven Satan certainly understood that the all powerful Father did not have to do what He did not want to do. And he certainly understood that his life was in his Creator's hand. What was veiled from his understanding was that he would continue to rebell against his Maker? Is this an example of what happens when we work against God? Isn't the Holy Spirit's influence and enlightenment withdrawn as we pull away from God, so that we cannot see what used to be so clear? How could Satan imagine that he could aspire to be more than he was created to be? Can I make this same mistake?

4 Jesus knew what was taking place and came to meet the mob. He asked, "Who are you looking for?" 5 They said, "Jesus of Nazareth." He replied, "I am He." Judas, who was betraying Him, was with them.

COMMENT: It is interesting that Judas came with them to identify Jesus, but Jesus identified Himself. Yet Judas stepped forward to earn his money. He thought that he was forcing Jesus to be act the part of the Messiah as Judas thought the Messiah must be, the immediate ultimate ruler of all.

Luke 22:47 While He was speaking to them a crowd came being led by Judas, one of the twelve. Coming up to Jesus, he kissed Him.

6 As Jesus said, "I am He," they drew back from Him and fell to the ground.

COMMENT: Such power is displayed when the great I AM declares who He is. This is the way it will be when Jesus is about to destroy sin and sinners forever. They will admit that Jesus is Lord of Lords and yet follow Satan and try take the Holy City. Logic means nothing to the sinner. It is that way with the evil heart.

7 So He asked them again, "Who are you looking for?" Again they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." 8 Once more Jesus said, "I told you that I am He. So if you want Me, let these others go."

COMMENT: Jesus sought to shield His disciples.

9 He said this to fulfill the words He had spoken in prayer when He said, "I have not lost one of those You have given to Me."

COMMENT:

John 17:12 "While I was with them I kept them in Your name. None of them are lost except the son of perdition, so that scripture will be fulfilled."

10 Simon Peter had a sword, and drawing it, struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. 11 Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword in its sheath. I must drink the cup My Father has given me."

COMMENT: Why did Jesus tell them to buy a sword? Was it for this moment in the garden?

Luke 22:36-38 He then said, "Now is the time that you should have a money belt and a bag. And if you do not have a sword, sell your coat and buy one." [37] "For what has been written must be fulfilled in Me where it says, 'And He was numbered with the transgressors.' This scripture refers to Me and will be fulfilled." [38] They said to Him, "Look Lord, we have two swords." And He replied, "It is enough."

12 Then the band of men with the officers of the Jews and their captain bound Jesus and took Him.

COMMENT: It is interesting that Peter was not punished for striking the high priest's servant with the sword. Probably because Jesus healed the man. But Peter surely intended to do harm. And he had said he was willing to die for Jesus. Fighting was how he thought to do this.

13 They led Him to Annas first. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year.

COMMENT: The previous high priest, Annas, had been deposed by the Romans. But he still was greatly respected by the Jews because the office was considered to be lifelong.

14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man die for the people.

COMMENT:

John 11:49-51 One of them named Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year, said, "You know nothing at all." [50] "You are not considering that it is expedient for us that one man die for the people so that the whole nation does not perish." [51] He did not say this from his own understanding, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation.

15 Simon Peter was following Jesus and so was another disciple. The other disciple was known to the high priest and was allowed to enter his court. 16 Peter stood outside by the door until the other disciple went out and spoke to the door keeper and brought him in. 17 The servant girl who kept the door asked Peter, "Are you also one of this Man's disciples?" Peter said, "No. I am not."

18 It was cold and some servants and officers stood around a fire warming themselves. Peter stood with them. 19 The high priest was questioning Jesus about His disciples and the things He had taught. 20 Jesus said, "I spoke openly to everyone. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple where all the Jews came together and anyone could listen. I said nothing in secret." 21 "Why question Me? Ask those who heard what I said to them." 22 When He had said this, one of the officers standing near Jesus struck Him, saying, "Is that how you speak to the high priest?"

COMMENT: Evidently there were some who didn't think anyone should question the high priest's questioning.

23 Jesus answered him saying, "If I said something wrong, tell Me what it was. If I spoke correctly, why do you strike Me?"

COMMENT: The law for dealing with supposed offenders was not being followed here. This officer reflected the attitude of his superiors. Justice was often wanting in this court.

24 So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

25 Simon Peter was standing by a fire warming himself. Bystanders said to him, "Are you also one of His disciples?" But again he denied it, saying, 'I am not! 26 One of the servants of the high priest who was related to the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said to him, "Didn't I see you in the garden with Him?" 27 Again Peter denied it, and it was then that the cock crowed.

COMMENT: How did Peter find himself in this terrible position when he had adamantly maintained his loyalty to Jesus as God's Son.

28 It was now early morning as they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium. They did not want to enter it themselves because this would defile them and prevent them from eating the Passover.

COMMENT: How interesting that they will defile themselves by causing Jesus to die.

29 So Pilate came out to them and said, "What accusation are you bringing against this Man?" 30 They answered saying, "If this Man had done no wrong we would not be delivering Him to you."

COMMENT: In other words, don't ask. Take our word for why He should be punished.

31 So Pilate said, "Take Him and judge Him according to your own law." The Jews replied, "We are not allowed to put anyone to death." 32 This fulfilled what Jesus had said about how He would die.

COMMENT:

John 12:32-33 "And if I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all men to Myself." [33] He said this to indicate the kind of death He was to die.

33 Pilate took Jesus into the Praetorium and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" 34 Jesus replied, "Are you asking this on your own initiative, or because others said it about Me?" 35 Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? The chief priests of Your nation have brought You to me. What have You done?" 36 Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it was My servants would be fighting to keep Me from being handed over to the Jews. But as I have said, My kingdom is not of this realm." 37 Pilate said, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "Yes. I was born for this purpose, to testify to the truth. Those who are of the truth hear My voice." 38 Pilate said, "What is truth?" After saying this, he went out to the Jews and said, "I find no fault in this Man."

COMMENT: Truth is that which is fact. Truth is righteousness.

Isaiah 59:14 "Justice has been turned back, and righteousness if far off. Truth stumbles in the street where righteousness cannot enter."

Psalms 119:142 Your righteousness is everlasting, and Your law is truth.

Psalms 117:2 For His merciful kindness toward us is great, and His truth endures forever. Praise the LORD!

39 "But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you want me to release the King of the Jews?"

COMMENT: Pilate hoped that there would be enough public sentiment to take this case out of his hands.

40 They cried out, saying, "Do not release this Man. Release Barabbas." Now he was a robber.

COMMENT:

Matthew 27:20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitude to ask for the release of Barabbas and that Jesus be put to death.

1 Pilate took Jesus away and had Him scourged. 2 His soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on His head. They then placed a purple robe on Him. 3 As they bowed down to Him, they said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And then they slapped His face.

COMMENT: Why do people commit cruel acts? Do they thus give evidence of their own insecurities? Why be cruel to this obviously Good Man? Surely the devil inspired them. Since Jesus was not a citizen of Rome, He was nobody as far as they were concerned and it was sport for them. It reminds one of how children often treat one another.

4 Pilate took Jesus back outside to the people and said, "Look, I am bringing Him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in Him."

COMMENT: When a prisoner was treated roughly by his soldiers, most of them would rail at their tormentors. This Man was different and Pilate was impressed.

5 Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said, "Here is the Man!" 6 When the chief priests and the officers saw Jesus, they cried out, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!" Pilate said, "Take Him and crucify Him yourselves, but I find no fault in Him."

COMMENT: What does Pilate think he is doing by telling them to crucify Jesus? The Jews could not crucify any one. Pilate would be haunted by this moment of his complicity for the rest of his life.

7 The Jews answered him, saying, "We have a law that says He must die because He claims to be the Son of God." 8 When Pilate heard this, he was afraid. 9 He took Jesus back into the Praetorium and asked Him, "Where do you come from?" But Jesus gave no answer.

COMMENT: Jesus had already talked about the fact that His kingdom was not of this world. Pilate's wife had told him that she had had a dream concerning Him. Pilate was missing his golden and perhaps only opportunity to make the right choice. He did not have to go along with the Jewish leaders. Even if it would cost him his position, that would have been better than the guilt that would follow him for the rest of his life.

10 So Pilate said to Him, "Why don't You speak to me? Don't You understand that I have the power to release You or crucify You?"

COMMENT: So Pilate here takes responsibility for Jesus' crucifixion.

11 Jesus answered, "You would have no authority over Me unless it had been given to you from above. The one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin."

COMMENT: As grevious as Pilate's sin was in being willing to condemn Jesus to death on the cross, the Jewish leaders were grossly more guilty. They had the Holy Scriptures. They should have recognized Who Jesus was. They were blinded by their own ambition while hiding behind their supposed care for their nation.

Romans 13:1 Let everyone be subject to the governing powers, for God has ordained these authorities.

12 Because of this Pilate tried to have Jesus released, but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you release this Man, you are not Caesar's friend. Anyone calling himself a king is opposed to Caesar."

COMMENT: The Jewish leaders knew how to get to Pilate. Or more likely, the devil who inspired them knew his weakness.

13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at the place called the Pavement. In Hebrew, it is Gabbatha.

14 Now it was about the sixth hour of the preparation day for the Passover. Pilate said to the Jews, "Look at your King!" 15 But they cried out, "Away with this Man. Crucify Him." Pilate said, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priest answered, "We have no king but Caesar."

COMMENT: Here is a stark example of sealing one's own doom with passionate words.

16 So Jesus was handed over to be crucified. 17 Bearing His cross He was taken out to a place called the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.

COMMENT: The victim was to suffer outside the camp.

Numbers 15:36 So all the congregation brought him out of the camp and stoned him to death, just as the LORD had commanded.

Hebrews 13:12 This is why Jesus suffered outside the gate that He might sanctify the people with His blood.

18 There they crucified Him between two other men. 19 Pilate wrote an inscription to be placed on Jesus' cross. It said, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews." 20 Many of the Jews read the inscription. It was written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek.

COMMENT: According to Pilate there was no question about who Jesus was. These were the three most used languages for any passerby to read and understand.

21 The chief priests told Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews.' Instead, write, 'He said, "I am King of the Jews. '. 22 Pilate said, "What I have written will remain."

COMMENT: They were having Jesus killed but everything did not turn out exactly as they wished. Rome, a godless government, would label this event as God wished.

23 After crucifying Jesus, the soldiers divided His garments four ways. And because His tunic was seamless, 24 they cast lots for it rather than divide it. This fulfilled the scripture that said, "They divided My outer garments among them. And for My clothing they cast lots."

COMMENT:

Psalms 22:18 They cast lots for my clothing and divide my garments among them.

25 Jesus' mother and His mother's sister stood by the cross with Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" 27 And to this disciple He said, "Behold your mother!" From that hour that disciple took her into his own home.

28 After this, Jesus knew that everything had been accomplished in order to fulfill scripture, and said, "I am thirsty."

COMMENT:

Psalms 22:15 My strength is gone and my tongue cleaves to my mouth. You are laying me in the dust of death.

29 There was a jar of vinegar nearby, so they filled a sponge with vinegar and held it to His mouth on a hyssop branch.

COMMENT:

Psalms 69:21 They gave me gall and vinegar to drink.

30 When Jesus had received the vinegar, He said, "It is finished!" And bowed His head, and breathed His last breath.

COMMENT:

Daniel 9:26 "After the sixty two week period the Messiah will be cut off. The people of the prince to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come like an overwhelming flood. War and desolation have been determined." 70_weeks_948_328.JPG.

Isaiah 53:12 "Therefore, I will alot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the booty with the strong, because He poured Himself out, even to death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For He bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors."

31 Because it was the day of preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross over the Sabbath, because it was a high day. They asked Pilate to break the legs of those who had been crucified and that they might be taken away.

COMMENT: Jesus was crucified on Friday which was called the preparation day. The next day was the Sabbath.

32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. 33 But when they came to Jesus they discovered that He was already dead, so they did not break His legs.

COMMENT: It is interesting to note that Jesus paid the price for sin in a matter of hours. What do those who believe in an everlasting hell make of that?

Psalms 34:20 He keeps their bones from being broken.

34 One of the soldiers thrust a spear into Jesus' side, and blood and water came out.

COMMENT:

Psalms 22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax. It has melted within me.

35 The one who saw this has testified to what he saw, and his testimony is true. He is telling the truth so that you may believe. 36 These things happened to fulfill scripture, "Not a bone of Him shall be broken."

COMMENT: This was foretold in the Old Testament.

Exodus 12:46 "It shall be eaten in the house and none of may be carried outside. Also, no bone of it shall be broken."

Psalms 34:20 He keeps their bones from being broken.

37 And in another place scripture says, "They shall look upon Him whom they have pierced."

COMMENT:

Zechariah 12:10 "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the One they have pierced, and mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, bitterly grieving as for a firstborn son."

Zechariah 13:6 "And he will be asked, 'What are these wounds in your hands?' And he will answer, 'I was wounded in the house of my friends.'"

38 After this Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate for the body of Jesus, and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39 Nicodemus, who had first come to Jesus at night, also came with about one hundred pounds of myrrh and aloes. 40 They bound the body of Jesus in linen wrappings along with the spices, as was the burial custom of the Jews.

41 Near the place where He was crucified there was a garden with a new tomb which had never been used. 42 And because it was the Jewish day of preparation, and the tomb was near by, they laid Jesus in it.

COMMENT:

Isaiah 53:9 "He was assigned a grave with wicked men, but a rich man gave Him his tomb. He did no violence. Neither was there deceit in anything He said."

1 Early on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb. It was still dark and she saw that the stone had been rolled away. 2 She ran to find Simon Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the LORD out of the tomb and we do not know where they have laid Him." 3 So Peter and the other disciple left for the tomb. 4 They were running together but the other disciple ran faster and came to the tomb first. 5 Stooping down he looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6 When Simon Peter arrived, he entered the tomb and saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and the napkin that had been around Jesus head. It was folded and laid to one side by itself.

COMMENT: Imagine Jesus sitting up and taking the napkin from His head, folding it and laying it where His head had been. The Creator of the universe, the One who had created everything with order, now laying aside that bit of cloth that had covered His face while He lay in the tomb. Even at this moment, He that had been separated from His Father in death, that we might live, now has time to fold this bit of cloth. This would suggest to those looking in that Jesus' body was not stolen away. Anyone stealing His body in haste would not have folded it. Jesus' habit of neatness was here displayed in that He took the time to fold this head covering before leaving the tomb under His own power.

8 Then the other disciple also entered the tomb and saw and believed.

COMMENT: This other disciple was John, who had a special relationship with Jesus and was slow to name himself in his gospel. It seems that he was first to believe that Jesus had raised from the dead. He must have remembered Jesus words.

John 10:17 "This is why the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life, that I may take it up again."

9 They had not understood the scripture that said He must rise again from the dead.

COMMENT:

Psalms 16:10 You will not abandon my soul to the grave, O LORD. Neither will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.

John 10:17-18 "This is why the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life, that I may take it up again." [18] "No one forces Me to do this. I do it on My own initiative. I have the authority to lay it down and to take it up again. I have received this command from My Father."

10 Then Simon Peter and the other disciple each returned to his own home.

11 Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. As she wept she stooped and looked into the tomb. 12 She saw two angels dressed in white, sitting there. One was at the head and the other at the foot of where Jesus had been laid. 13 They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She answered, "Because they have taken my Lord away and I do not know where they have laid Him." 14 After saying this, she turned away and saw someone standing behind her. She did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?" Thinking He was the gardener she said, "Sir, if you have taken Him out of the tomb, tell me where you have laid Him and I will take Him away." 16 Jesus said to her, "Mary!" Then it was that she recognized Him. Turning to Him, she exclaiming, "Rabboni!" (Which in Hebrew means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, "Do not detain Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father. Go to My brethren and tell them that I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God." 18 Mary Magdalene then went to the disciples and told them that she had seen the LORD, and what He had said to her.

19 It was the first day of the week. When evening had come, the disciples had gathered and shut the doors, for they were afraid of the Jews. Jesus came and stood in their midst saying, "Peace be with you."

COMMENT: Up until now, they had been experiencing anything but peace. They supposed that they would be the next target of the Jewish leaders.

20 He showed them His hands and His side, and the disciples rejoiced to see that it was really Him. 21 Again Jesus said to them, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, so I am sending you."

COMMENT: To be sent by God to do anything probably meant they were not about to die. Jesus was alive. They had renewed hope.

22 Having said this, He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit." 23 "If you forgive someone of sin, they are forgiven, and if you do not forgive them, their sin remains."

24 Thomas called Didymus, who was one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 When the disciples told him that they had seen the LORD, he said, "Unless I see the nail prints in His hands and feel them with my finger, and unless I touch His side, I will not believe that He has risen."

COMMENT: For Thomas it just seemed too good to be true.

26 Eight days later the disciples were together again and this time Thomas was with them. Though the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you."

COMMENT: Jesus did not come through the door. His glorified body was not restricted as it had been from His birth until His death. He now had a body like you and I will have when we are changed into His likeness.

Psalms 17:15 As for me, I shall behold Your face in righteousness and I will be satisfied to awake with Your likeness.

27 Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here with your finger and feel My hands. And put your hand into My side, and believe." 28 Thomas answered Him, saying, "My Lord and my God!" 29 Jesus said to him, "Do you believe because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who believe without seeing."

COMMENT: This blessing is for you and me. We have only seen through the account of the Bible writers. Yet we may believe. God has provided enough evidence for each of us.

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of the disciples that are not written in this book. 31 These things have been recorded so that you may believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that by believing, you may have eternal life through His name.

COMMENT:

1 Peter 1:8-9 Even though you have not seen Him, you love and believe in Him. Your joy is inexpressible and full of glory, [9] and because of your faith, you obtain your soul's salvation.

1 John 5:13 I have written these things to those of you who believe in the name of the Son of God, and that you may know that you have eternal life.

1 After this Jesus showed Himself to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias (Galilee). It happened this way. 2 Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples, were together.

COMMENT: Seven disciples are mentioned here, five by name.

3 Simon Peter said, "I am going fishing." And the others said, "We will go with you." So they took a boat out all night and caught nothing. 4 As the day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach, but the disciples did not know it was Him. 5 Calling out to them, He said, "Children, did you catch any fish?" They answered, "No." 6 Then He said to them, "Cast your net on the other side of the boat and you will find fish." So they cast their net on the other side and were not able to haul the net in because there were so many fish. 7 The disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the LORD." Hearing this, Peter put on his outer garment, for he had stripped down for work, and threw himself into the sea.

COMMENT: How interesting that Peter did not want to approach Christ half naked. So should we consider how we approach God in worship.

8 The other disciples came to shore in the boat which was about a hundred yards from shore. They were dragging the net full of fish.

COMMENT: Jesus had given them the fish and they didn't want to let any of them get away.

9 When they got to land they discovered a fire that had burned down to coals and was cooking fish and bread.

10 Jesus said, "Bring some of the fish you just caught." 11 Simon Peter went and pulled the net to land. It was full of one hundred and fifty three large fish, yet the net had not broken.

COMMENT: The number 153 is an unusual number all by itself. We do not understand its significance in this instance.

12 Jesus said, "Come, have breakfast." None of the disciples asked Him, "Who are You?" They knew it was the LORD.

COMMENT: At first they seemed to have difficulty positively identifying Jesus, yet they were sure it was Him.

13 Jesus gave them bread and fish. 14 This was the third time that Jesus showed Himself to the disciples after He was raised from the dead.

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?" Peter said, "Yes Lord. You know that I love You." Jesus said, "Feed My lambs."

COMMENT: Remember, on the night Jesus was arrested, Peter had said, "Though everyone leave You, I will remain with you."

Mark 14:29 Peter said to him, "Even if everyone else leaves You, I will not."

16 A second time Jesus said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" He said to Jesus, "Yes Lord, You know I love You." Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep." 17 Then He said to him a third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because Jesus had asked him a third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things. You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep."

COMMENT: Peter had denied Jesus three times. The third time Peter denied Jesus was like an exclamation mark on the point he was making in denying Jesus. Some of the disciples may have questioned Peter's sincerity. So Jesus asked Peter three times in their presence. Jesus is letting everyone know that He expects Peter to continue working for Him.

18 "I tell you the truth, when you were young you would dress yourself and go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will dress you and bring you where you do not wish to go."

COMMENT: This seems to be more than a reference to the cross which will be Peter's end. It is a message to all of us who have been used having control. The day will come when we will no longer have that luxury. Quiet submission will be required and this will be difficult.

19 Jesus said this to signify with what sort of death Peter would glorify God. And when Jesus had said this, He then said to him, "Follow Me."

COMMENT: "Follow Me, " were the words Jesus first spoke to Peter. The call is still there for him, even after his denial of knowing Jesus. And it is His call to each of us.

20 Peter turned and saw the disciple Jesus loved following them. This was the disciple who had leaned on Jesus bosom at the supper to ask who it was that was betraying Jesus. 21 Seeing this disciple, Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, what will happen to this man?" 22 Jesus said to him, "If I want him to live until I come, what is that to you? Follow Me." 23 Because Jesus had said this to Peter, many of the brethren thought that He had said that this disciple would not die before Jesus had come, but Jesus did not say this.

24 This same disciple is testifying to these things and has written them down, and we know he is telling the truth. 25 Jesus did many other signs, which if they were all written down, I suppose that the world could not contain the books that would be written.

COMMENT: Everything Jesus did while He was on earth had significance, only some of which was recorded. The Bible is the all time best seller of all books. This is amazing, considering that it is not read all that much by most people. Intending to read the Bible is akin to Peter's denial of Jesus. When we neglect to read God's word, we are denying His power to work within us. If we would read the Bible as we ought to, our lives would be changed into His likeness as He works within us, causing us to grow into His likeness and be recreated in His image. Then will be fulfilled His desire to recreate man into His likeness.

Genesis 1:26 And then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish and the birds, the cattle, as well as the other beasts and everything that moves on the ground."
