1 John - At A Glance

5 Chapters - Written about AD 88 by John

Theme: We have all sinned. We must resist the attraction to sin. If we do sin we must confess the sin. We are not to be led astray by any teaching that denies Christ's deity or His humanity. To truly love is to put others first. How we treat others shows who our father is.

1-5_Our joy is complete when we are able to tell you about the Word of Life that was manifest to us. We saw and touched Him. He was with the Father and was made known to us.

__6-10_His message to us was that God is light and no darkness is found in Him. If we walk in darkness we are not practicing truth. When we walk in the light Jesus blood cleanses us. As we confess our sin He is faithful to forgive us. If we say we have no sin the truth is not in us.

1-6_We should not sin. But if we do, we have an advocate in Jesus. When we know Jesus we will keep His commandments. If we say we know Him but do not keep His commandments we are liars. When we abide in Him we walk as He walked.

__7-15_I am writing about an old commandment that might seem new to you. This commandment is to love and not hate. The love of the world and the love of the Father cannot be in you at the same time.

__16-29_Those working against Christ are becoming more evident. Many of them have come from within our group and are no longer with us. Anyone who denies that Jesus is Christ is antichrist. No one comes to the father without recognizing that Jesus is His Son. He is righteous. Everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.

1-12_When God calls us His children He shows His great love for us. As His children we are to be pure as He is pure. Jesus came to take away our sin. In Him there is no sin. Do not be deceived. The one who practices sin is of the devil. Anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God.

__13-18_We should be willing to die for each other. We also should be willing help one another. Our love must be demonstrated in word and deed.

__19-24_God speaks through the conscience. This is how He assures us of truth. His command for each one is to believe in His Son Jesus Christ and to love each other. Whatever we ask of God He gives to us because we do His will. When we do what He asks, He abides in us through His Holy Spirit.

1-6_If someone comes claiming to have a message from God, test him. Some are not from God. The message that Jesus Christ has come from God in the flesh is the true message.

__7-17_We are to love each other. This comes with being born again. Love is best demonstrated by the way God loved us before we loved Him. When we love each other, God abides in us. Confessing that Jesus as God's Son is proof that God is abiding in us. When God's love is in us we need not fear the judgment.

__18-21_Perfect love for God casts out all fear. However, if we do not love our brother, we are not capable of loving God.

1-12_To love the Father means we will also love Jesus. When we love the Father we also love His children and observe His commandments. As we love God we gain the victory over worldly things. We do this by faith in Jesus. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit bear witness to this.

__13-21_We may have confidence that He will give us what we ask of Him when it is in accordance with His will. We know that when we are born of God we are not supposed to sin. But if we do, we have an advocate. Jesus came to give us a greater understanding of the Father. Guard yourselves from anything that takes your eyes off of Jesus.
