29 Chapters - Written about 430 BC by Ezra, according to Jewish tradition.

Theme: By listing the names of people in Israel and even back to Adam, God established Israel's true heritage. They were all one family in Adam. 1-4_The Philistines fought with Israel and the men of Israel fled from them with many falling on Mount Gilboa. The Philistines followed Saul and Jonathan closely. They struck down Jonathan and fatally wounded Saul who then asked his armor bearer to kill him. Since the armor bearer would not do this, Saul fell on his own sword.

__5-7_When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword. This is how Saul died with his three sons and his entire household. When the men of Israel saw that Saul and his sons were dead, they fled from their cities and the Philistines came and lived in them.

__8-10_The next day the Philistines came to strip the slain and found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. They stripped Saul and took his head and his armor and sent messengers throughout the land to carry the good news to their people. They put his armor in the house of their gods and fastened his head to the house of Dagon.

__11-14_When Jabesh-Gilead heard of what the Philistines had done to Saul, valiant men among them went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and buried them under the oak in Jabesh and fasted for seven days. 1-3_Then all of Israel gathered to David at Hebron and said, you are one of us. In the past when Saul was king you were the one we looked to for leadership. God said, you shall shepherd Israel and be their prince. So they made a covenant with David in Hebron and anointed him king over Israel just as the LORD had said through Samuel.

__4-9_Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem. The Jebusites still inhabited it. David promised that whoever was the first to strike down a Jebusite would become chief and commander. Joab did this and became chief. They took the city and it was called the city of David. David became greater and greater and the LORD was with him.

__10-14_These are the mighty men whom David gave positions of leadership. Jashobeam was chief of the thirty mighty men. He killed three hundred at one time. Eleazar stood in a field of barley with David and struck down the Philistines when the others had fled. The LORD gave them a great victory.

__15-18_The Philistines were camped in the valley of Rephaim. There was a garrison of the Philistines in Bethlehem. 1-8_Then David asked the leaders if it would not be good to move the ark from where it was since Saul had taken it into war. He wanted to be able to seek God's will through it. They carried the ark on a new cart and celebrated with all their might.

__9-14_At the threshing floor of Childon, the oxen nearly upset the ark from the cart. Uzza put out his hand to steady it. God was angry that any but a Levite should touch the ark and struck him dead. David became afraid of God and would not move the ark any farther. The ark was placed in Obed-Edom's house nearby and God blessed him.

1-7_At this time Hiram king of Tyre sent David messengers with cedar trees, masons and carpenters to build him a house. David now realized the LORD had established him as king over Israel. He took more wives and had more sons and daughters. Their names are listed here, including Nathan and Solomon.

__8-12_When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king they went looking for him. David heard of this and asked the LORD if he should go against them. The LORD said to go and He would be with him. So David went to Baal-Perazim and defeated them. The Philistines abandoned their gods and David had their gods burned there.

__13-15_Then the Philistines made yet another raid in the valley and David inquired of the LORD again. God told him not to go after them but rather to circle around behind them. When you come to the balsam trees and hear marching in the tops of the trees, then go into battle. God will have gone before you to strike the enemy.

__16-17_David did just as God had commanded him. They struck down the army of the Philistines from Gibeon to Gezer. David's fame spread to all lands and the LORD brought the fear of him on all nations.

1-10_David built a house for himself in the city of David. He also prepared a place to pitch a tent for the ark of God. He said no one was to carry the ark except the Levites because the LORD had designated them to minister to Him forever. David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem and gathered together the Levites.

__11-13_David called Zadok and Abiathar the priests and certain Levites and said, you are the heads of the households of the Levites. Consecrate yourselves that you may bring the ark of the LORD to the place I have prepared. In the past we tried to move it using the wrong people and the LORD was angry with us.

__14-24_So the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel. They carried the ark of God on their shoulders with poles as Moses had directed according to God's word. David asked the chief Levites to appoint singers and musicians to make joyful music. The names are given of those appointed.

__25-26_So David along with the elders of Israel and the captains of thousands brought the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD from Obed-Edom's house with great joy. As the ark was being carried, seven bulls and seven rams were sacrificed to the LORD.

__27-29_David was wearing a robe of fine linen and an Ephod of linen as the ark was being carried by the Levites and as the singers were singing. Thus all Israel brought the Ark of the Covenant with shouting and music. As the ark of the LORD came to Jerusalem, Michal, Saul's daughter, saw David leaping with joy and she despised him.

1-4_When David was settled in his new house of cedar he spoke with Nathan the prophet and said, I have a house of cedar. I'd like to build a house for the Ark of the Covenant. Nathan encouraged him to go ahead with this idea. But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and told him to tell David not to build a house for Him.

__5-15_I have always dwelt in a tent since I brought Israel up from Egypt. I brought you in from the pasture to lead My people. I will make your name great and appoint a place for My people Israel. After you die I will put one of your sons on your throne. He shall build My house and I will establish his throne forever. So Nathan spoke this to David.

__16-27_David submitted to the word of the LORD, thanking Him for all He had done thus far. He said, let the words you have spoken, O Lord, be established forever, just as You have spoken. And let Your name be established and magnified forever.

1-4_After this David defeated the Philistines and took Gath and its surrounding towns. He also defeated Moab, and the Moabites became his servants and brought tribute. He defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah. He ruled as far as the Euphrates River. David took one thousand of their chariots and hamstrung their horses.

__5-7_When the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer David killed 22,000 of them. He put garrisons among the Arameans and they became his servants bringing him tribute. The LORD helped David wherever he went. David took the gold shields of Hadadezer's servants and brought them to Jerusalem.

__8-9_David also took very large amounts of bronze from the cities of Hadadezer. It was eventually used by Solomon to make the bronze sea, the pillars and bronze utensils.

Tou, king of Hamath, had been an enemy of Hadadezer and was happy to see him defeated. He brought to David all kinds of articles of gold, silver and bronze.

__10-17_David dedicated these to the LORD.

Abishai defeated 18,000 Edomites and Edom became David's servant, too. The LORD helped David wherever he went. David administered justice and righteousness for all the people. Joab was over the army and Jehoshaphat was recorder. Zadok and Abimelech were the priests.

1-3_After this Nahash king of Ammon died and his son Hanun became king in his place. David wanted to show kindness to Hanun for the sake of his father Nahash and sent messengers to console him. But Hanun's advisors said the messengers from David had come only to spy out the land.

__4-5_So Hanun took David's servants and shaved them and cut off half their garments as far as their hips and sent them away. David learned of this before they came home. His men were greatly humiliated and David told them to stay in Jericho until their beards had grown. Then they could return.

__6-15_When Hanun and his men saw that they had made themselves odious to David, he hired soldiers from Mesopotamia including the Arameans. David sent Joab and the army to meet them. Joab divided the army between his brother Abshai and himself. They promised to help each other as needed. Ammon and their allies fled before them.

__16-19_When the Arameans saw that they were defeated by Israel, they brought in reinforcements. These were soundly defeated and became David's servants. After that they were no longer willing to help the sons of Ammon.

David took the crown of their king and weighed it. It had a talent of gold and had a precious stone in it. They placed it on David's head. There was much spoil.

__3-8_After this war broke out with the Philistines at Gezer and they were subdued. War continued with the Philistines. When they met the Philistines in Gath, there was a man of great stature who had twelve fingers and twelve toes. He taunted Israel and Jonathan, David's nephew, killed him.

1-5_Then Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel. He told Joab and the princes to do the count. Joab protested saying, doing this will cause guilt in Israel. David persisted so Joab went throughout all Israel to count the people. Israel had 1,100,000 men and Judah had 470,000 men who drew the sword.

__6-8_Joab did not count Levi or Benjamin because he abhorred the king's command. The counting of Israel displeased God and He stuck Israel. David then said to God, I have sinned greatly by doing this thing. Please take away my iniquity for I have been very foolish.

__9-12_The LORD spoke to Gad, David's seer. Tell David that I am offering him three choices concerning what will be done to Israel. So Gad said to David, the LORD says that you may choose three years of famine, or three months at the hand of your foes, or three days of pestilence from the LORD. What answer shall I give the LORD?

__13-14_David said, I am greatly distressed. Please let me fall into the hands of the LORD, for His mercies are very great. But do not let me fall into the hand of man. So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel and 70,000 men of Israel fell.

__15-16_God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem but then decided to do no more destruction. As the angel stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, David looked up and saw the angel of the LORD standing between heaven and earth with a drawn sword stretched over Jerusalem. David and the elders fell on their faces.

__17-18_David said to God, I am the one who commanded the count of the people. It is I who sinned and not these people. Please let Your hand be against me and not the people. Then the angel of the LORD told Gad to tell David to build an alter to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

__19-22_David did as the LORD instructed. Ornan had been threshing wheat with his four sons. When they saw the angel they hid themselves. As David came to Ornan, he prostrated himself before David with his face to the ground. David offered to pay the full price for the threshing floor so he could build an alter to the LORD and stay the plague.

__23-24_Ornan said, take the land free of charge. I'll even give the oxen for burnt offering and the threshing sledges for wood and the wheat for a grain offering. But David replied, no, for I will surely pay the full price. I will not take what is yours for the LORD, or offer a burnt offering which costs me nothing.

__25-27_So David gave Ornan 600 shekels of gold for the site. Then he built an altar to the LORD and there offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. He called to the LORD and He answered with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering. And the LORD commanded the angel to put his sword back in its sheath.

__28-30_So David saw that the LORD had answered him and he offered sacrifice there. The tabernacle of the LORD which Moses had made was at that time at Gibeon. But David could not go before it to inquire of God because he was terrified by the sword of the angel of the LORD.

1-4_Then David said, this is the house of the LORD God and this is the alter of burnt offering for Israel. He gave orders to gather the foreigners in the land. Some were set to cutting stone for the house of the LORD. David prepared large quantities of iron for nails, hinges and bronze beyond measure as well as Sidonian cedar.

__5-6_David said, my son Solomon is young and inexperienced. The house for the LORD must be the most glorious of any house of worship in any land. I will make ample preparation for it before I die. He called Solomon and charged him with the building of the house for the LORD God of Israel.

__7-12_He said to him, I wanted to build a house for the LORD but He told me that I have shed much blood and waged great wars, so I cannot build His house. He said one of my sons would have rest from his enemies. He will build it in days of peace. Now my son, the LORD be with you as you build this house and may He give you understanding.

__13-14_You shall prosper if you are careful to follow the statutes and ordinances of the LORD as He has commanded through Moses. Be strong and courageous and without fear. See all I have done to prepare for the building of the house of the LORD: 100,000 talents of gold and 1,000,000 talents of silver, bronze and iron beyond weight and much timber.

__15-19_There are many workman: stone cutters and masons, carpenters and men of every skill. Materials abound. Arise and work and may the LORD be with you. David commanded the leaders of Israel to assist Solomon, saying, you now have rest on every side. Build the sanctuary to the LORD so that the Ark of the Covenant may be brought into it.

1-5_David assembled all the officials of Israel at Jerusalem. Rising to his feet he made this speech.

Brethren and my people, I had intended to build a permanent home for the Ark of the Covenant and I made preparations to do this. But God said, No! You are a man of war. Now He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne.

__6-8_He has said, your son Solomon is the one who shall build My house. I have chosen him and I will be a father to him. If he resolutely follows My commandments and ordinances I will establish his kingdom forever. In the sight of all Israel and the LORD, seek after His commandments that you and your sons may possess this good land.

__9-10_As for you, Solomon, know the God of your father and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind. For the LORD searches all hearts and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him He will let you find Him. But if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever. Consider that He has chosen you. Be courageous and act.

__11-19_Then David gave Solomon the plans of all that he had in mind for the temple, its porch and all its buildings. The plan included the division of the priests and Levites, the furniture and utensils. David said, the LORD made me to understand everything in this plan by His hand upon me as I wrote every detail.

__20-21_Then David told Solomon to be strong and courageous. He was to act and not fear for the LORD would be with him until the work on the house of the LORD was finished. Everything has already been organized and every man is willing to do the work. All the people are entirely at your command.

1-5_King David said to the entire assembly, God has chosen my son Solomon, but he is young and inexperienced. Building the temple is a great work for it is for God and not man. It has been my delight to have provided the materials for the building of His house. Who of you is willing to consecrate himself to the LORD for this work?

__6-12_The rulers and commanders offered willingly to help pay for the construction of the house of God. David rejoiced with the people. He said, blessed art Thou of LORD God of Israel. Thine is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory and the majesty. You are over all. Everything comes from You. In Your hand is power and might.

__13-19_We thank You and praise Your glorious name. Who are we that we have given only what You have given to us? O LORD God, preserve the intentions of the heart of Your people and direct us to You. And give my son Solomon a perfect heart to keep Your commandments, testimonies and statutes, to do them and to build the temple.

__20-25_Then David and all those assembled blessed the LORD and bowed low. The next day they made sacrifices and ate and drank before the LORD. They made Solomon king a second time and he sat on the throne instead of David his father. Everyone pledged allegiance to Solomon and the LORD exalted him in Israel more than David or Saul.

__26-30_David had reigned over Israel forty years: first in Hebron for seven years and then thirty three more years in Jerusalem. He died at a ripe old age full of riches and honor. The story of David, his power and the circumstances of his reign, are written in the chronicles of Samuel the seer, Nathan the prophet and Gad the seer.
